We pulled into Kalgoorlie at about 5pm to find the first caravan park that we drove too was full, but luckily were able to secure a powered site at the next one. We were recommended the local pup 'The Rec' for dinner so headed over to find an all you can eat smorgasbord, not our usual, but we sat down, ate too much, then went back to the van to wallow in our fullness! The next morning we went to check out the Kalgoorlie Boulder Super Pit, the largest open cut mine in Australia. What an unbelievably huge hole in the ground that lies so close to the township. The pit measures 3.8km long and 1.35km wide and goes down to a depth of more than 500 metres, now that is one BIG mine! We then ... read more

Monday 10thJune 2013. Well, here we are back in the big west island. Our first two nights in the Midland Budget Motel were fine, fortunately we weren’t expecting anything flash, and we weren’t disappointed. The rooms though were perfectly adequate, clean and recently renovated. All accommodation is expensive here in Perth. These units were attached to the Commercial Tavern, a workingman’s pub – the only females aside from me, were the Irish bar girls and the cook (the owner’s Mum). Yes, and all pubs seem to have one - the local p*%#head, a Maori fella who wanted to serenade me with Pokarekare Ana. I didn’t let on that I knew the words, I would probably still be there! Tuesday 11th June - up and on the train into Perth and Fremantle with the early commuters, where ... read more

Geo: -30.7477, 121.472Kalgoorlie is another huge town 31,000 people and most of the buildings are old but well kept. The town is very green which is surprising as they depend on a lot of water via a pipeline from Perth 650km away. The town is very much a mining town and there are so many shops here. The shops along the main street are all under cover with bull nose verandahs. We took a look at the Superpit from the lookout. It is enormous and we are taking a tour into the pit on Monday so that should be good.Mount Charlotte is the local lookout and contains the reservoir for the town water. Not far from town is the Two Up shed and it is still used today. Check out the loo's. No roof but at least ... read more

Day 58 – Sunday 26th August – Perth to Boondi Rock in Goldfields National Park (40km W of Calgardie) It had been another cool night and the tent was damp with dew outside and condensation inside, so we left the tent to dry out while we went to pick up Luke and watch Rory play in his under 10 footy match. We left the oval at around 10.30 after having said our farewells to the Dawsons. We needed to get fuel and some shopping before we left so drove to the local shopping centre. Coincidentally today is the first day of legal Sunday trading in WA so there was nothing standing in our way to get what we needed - apart from the supermarket not opening until 11am. Back at the caravan park the ... read more

Geo: -30.7477, 121.472Todays Challenge - To view the SuperPitOur first point of call today is the Super Pit lookout which is 8km out of town. This pit is an open cut mine that has gobbled up some eighty odd underground mines and is now owned by one company, that being Barrick Gold. On arriving we are faced with a shut gate. Rod calls the number on the sign and they tell him the lookout is closed for yearly maintenance, he asks when it will be open they tell him tomorrow. Rod exclaims that Kalgoorlie can stick their SuperPit where it fits as we will be gone tomorrow. He also threatens to sell his Barrick Gold shares. We head to historic Burt St in Boulder which was the original township during the gold-rush; the main attraction is the ... read more

Geo: -30.7477, 121.472Todays challenge - To navigate our way through Perth's maze of freeways without taking a wrong turn.We depart Perth at 7.30 as we will be driving into the early morning sun. Perth farewells us with heavy rain and peak hour traffic as the Tom Tom tries to navigate me through five different freeways before heading us out of town. It tells me to bear left however there are four lanes bearing left so I stick to the middle lane. "Recalculating it blurts out". Dam it, I have failed the challenge already. Back on track we head underground through a very long tunnel then reappear only to drive through bumper to bumper traffic and miles of roadworks. We still have not seen a sign to Kalgoorlie. One hour later we spot a sign that indicates ... read more

27 Esperance 26 March 2012 Decided to break the journey to Esperance and stayed at a (very) small town called Ravensthorpe. Had an all in one shop, an IGA and hardware store. Across the road was the Aust Post shop and nearby the only clothing shop in the street, it was having a sale – all size 9 shoes half price! The camping ground was equally quirky with old rusty bits of farm equipment lying/placed around the site. However, the facilities were clean and good, which is the main thing. Next morning to Esperance, which claims to have the best beaches in Australia, and they could be right. The sand is pure white, very fine and the water is clear and turquoise in colour. Unfortunately, the weather hasn’t been the best, we’ve had cloud and SE ... read more

This Blog entry covers our stay in the Heart of the Goldfields from the 14th to the 19th November. There are 53 photos with this blog and I cannot (for some insane reason get them in order!) so this entry is over three pages not two, Additionally, you can only enter the third page from the bottom of the first page, this page. So I hope you get to see all the pics and you understand what I am saying (questionable!) I hope I can fix it soon and remove this message. Where do we start !!! What a magnificent place this is. Full of history, lots to do and fantastic shopping, the likes of which could only be rivalled in a major capital city, and everything is so big! I guess a bit of history... ... read more

Leaving Norseman early again as the sun had been up for 4 hours and it was still only 8.00am! we headed north to Kalgoorlie which is the centre of WA's gold mining history. We went via Kambalda, a mining town that basically is all new accommodation for miners.....few facilities, but an amazingly clean and new looking Caravan Park and a great oval, with real green grass which Jackie loved to run on. Kalgoorlie was once known as Hannan's find in honour of Paddy Hannan, the first prospector to find gold here in 1893. Again an horse was involved, Paddy and a few mates had to stay behind a prospecting party because one of the horses's had lost a shoe. Whilst this was being fixed up, a bit of fossicking led them to discover the richest gold ... read more

On Saturday we all headed in to Kalgoorlie on our way out to an old mining town where there is an old pub to have some lunch. On the way Sarah hit a bird with her truck and we didn't see it come flying out or anything so we stopped and Jason being the brave guy that he is got out to have a look. I decided to get out too to see what happened. Sarah was a bit scared. The bird was still alive and looking well but managed to get himself on the other side of the grill. The pictures explain it better then I can! Jason nudged it out with a stick and it hopped away happy to still be alive. We had lunch in the old town and then stopped by an ... read more
