Set off on the long trip to Kalgoorlie-Boulder early on Sunday morning. The roads are endless and featureless, every so often there will be a crest or a bend, then another long road. Stopped in Norseman and Coolgardie on the way. Kalgoorlie-Boulder is the main city in the Goldfields, a town of moderate charm. Visited the super pit. Visited the famous Exchange Hotel. Along with the other drinkers, was invited to pay for the barmaids to get undressed. Turned out they were from Newcastle and Manchester. Today I visited a ghost town, went to the gym then went to the gold mining museum. Setting off towards Kalbarri tomorrow, stopping overnight at a small place called Sandstone.... read more

Today we drove, and drove and drove! We are now in Kalgoorlie which is about 600km west of Perth. Once we had left Fremantle it was a long straight road all the way! I am sure we did not turn for at least 6 hours. The roads are so quiet that you barely pass any traffic. There were quite a lot of road trains (giant lorries with 3 trailers) but the novelty of them was beginning to wear a bit thin towards the end. There were a few things along the way to distract us. We passed a museum that was shaped like a giant SLR camera. The museum seem to have shut up shop which didn't surprise me too much as we were miles from anywhere. Due to my love of photo taking I obviously ... read more

(Extracted from Our Summer in Australia and New Zealand Amazon.com) Having left the Indian Pacific cross country train at Kalgoorlie, before its final overnight run to Perth, we began day four of our journey back and forth across Australia, with a closer look at the town that epitomizes Australia's former Wild West. The story begins with an 1892 gold strike in Coolgardie, about 25 miles from present day Kalgoorlie, to which thousands of gold crazed prospectors rushed. Thus when rumors circulated in 1893 that another "find" had been discovered somewhere to the east, about 50 out-of-luck "diggers" left Coolgardie to discover the location of this new mountain of gold. Among them were three hapless, unlucky Irish prospectors named Flanagan, Shea and Patrick Hannon. Hannon's horse became lame and these three lingered behind for the night allowing ... read more

We're really getting an appreciation for how vast Australia is. As the train keeps trekking across this island continent, it's obvious to see why 95% of the population lives along coastal cities; the interior is dry, rocky and flat with little to no vegetation for as far as the eye can see for 100s of km in every direction. The steady rocking of the train while taking in this huge vastness is hypnotizing. We're constantly eating it seems. Meals are served in two shifts; we're in the later shift. By the time we get back to our cabin from one meal, a couple hours later, the first shift is getting fed again. (Then again, snacking on junk food in between meals probably doesn't help the situation.) Our first stop today around 1pm was Cook in South ... read more

The conductor had given us a stern warning not to wander too far while in Cook, for once the refueling was complete the train would be leaving for it journey across the Nullarbor, and you don't want to be stranded in the middle of the outback. The Nullarbor (Latin in a way null being none arbor trees...i.e. treeless) is akin to California's Death Valley, but much larger in size. The Indian Pacific travels through this 160,000 square mile arid and treeless plain on the longest straight stretch of rail line in the world; not the slightest deviation for 286 miles. For train rides this is the longest day; a journey where the next meal becomes the highly anticipated event. Bring a good book. I dallied most of the day doing just that, reading the Fatal Shore, ... read more

The trip from Wave Rock to Kalgoorlie started out very dusty, although a light rain began to fall. By the time we hit the Great Eastern Highway, the rain was quite heavy, but by the time we reached Kalgoorlie, it had stopped for the time being. We stayed for three nights at the Prospector Caravan Park. Temperatures got up to about 30°C and it managed to rain several times while we were there, mostly just lightly although one night it rained quite persistently with a fair bit of thunder about. Thomas' foot is quickly getting better and he's now able to be a bit more mobile. While in Kalgoorlie, we visited the spectacular Super Pit, Super Pit Shop, Mt Charlotte, Royal Flying Doctor Service, as well as a drive past the brothels in Hay Street., which ... read more

We decided today that we were going to have an easy rest day. Warwick went to the office and booked in for another day so all up we stayed 3 nights. Warwick updated the blog while Marg rested and read a book; the sky was overcast in the morning and in the afternoon the skies cleared and sun came out. ... read more

A real nice day today as we woke the sun was up and not a cloud in the sky. We decided to go out for the day and see Kalgoorlie. After breakfast and some washing we took the dogs for a run so we can leave them in the van. So we set of to the tourist info centre and obtained some tourist attractions to go and see. Being a holiday weekend there is nothing open so that limits things again. First stop was the Little Boulder Sweet Shop where there is lollies from all over Australia as well as N.Z, U.K, and America, so after our sweet tooth was satisfied we moved on to The Super Pit which is about 330mts deep. Next stop was the Mining Hall of Fame where we went down a ... read more

Awoken up by pouring rain early in the morning so packed up and left Albany for Esperance, a distance of 455 k’s. Not much to say as it rained heavy most of day. Arrived at Pink Lake Tourist Park (fpa) late in the afternoon. Still raining when we went to bed hopefully it will get better tomorrow as we are off to Kalgoorlie to try and get away from this rain. The site we were put on has little grass and where the door to the van is they put sand down so everytime we go into the van we take a load of sand also. Too cold and wet to clean up now.... read more

We left Walpole and drove a whole 106k’s on our way to Albany Holiday Park (fpa). The day is cold and wet again. The road is hilly and windy again as we wind our way through the National Parks. Just after Nornalup we stopped at a toffee shop on a farm. We left the Toffee shop and went to Albany via the tourist drive. The address in the book put us some 60 k’s away but there was a small map so we worked off it. We booked in here for 3 nights so a trip around the country side is in order. After setting up and checking out the park we were extremely happy with our choice, grass everywhere and a concrete slab to park on. The very friendly staff in the office was ... read more
