While Sarah and Jason were at work I headed up to the Red Hill Lookout which is in Kambalda. You can see the big salt lakes from up there. Kambalda is split into two parts, Kambalda East and Kambalda West. I did a little drive around to check out the place. I picked Sarah up from work and then we picked up the girls from daycare. On Saturday we decided to head into Kalgoorlie to do some shopping. Jason was working this weekend. So Sarah, me, Lucinda and Isobel had a girls day shopping around the town. We stopped at Mt. Charlotte lookout which is also where the town's water supply is piped into. Lucinda had a great time with my camera taking tons of pictures. We had lunch in town at the cafe which was ... read more

I was up at 5am to catch my train from East Perth at 7 am to Kalgoorlie. Checked my big backpack and then boarded the train. It's a pretty modern train. I ended up having a seat to myself but the train was mostly full. It stops at some small outback towns along the way. I watched one of the movies they had on the screens and fell asleep for a bit but the rest of the time I was just looking out the window at the countryside. I didn't get to see any Kangaroos bouncing through the outback. The train stops in Southern cross so I caught a glimpse at my new home. The town is set back in the trees away from the train stop so I didn't get to see much which means ... read more

Day 78 We bust through the doors of the Woolworths like some cowboys with smoke billowing and people running to hide… well not quite more like we enter quietly, I pretend to have magic and get the doors to open… sigh.. one day. LOL. We restock well this time, eggs, steak and potatoes. Woot woot were eating good the next few days. But for now we are off and running towards the start of the Holland track, but first of course we get gas at a steal of a deal, only 1.30/L with food fuel and ice we set out. The road is a nice wide gravel road till the start of the track and we motor about 70km form town and pull off on a track and hide in the bushes about 1km from the ... read more

Day 77 Superpit bound, here we are, looking a the largest stripmine in the world, able to see it from space and a stunning view from ground level for us on a tighter budget. It was a nice start to the day we spent almost a solid hour with the binoc’s out looking at all the equipment. Otherwise, we did nothing but wonder around town. We rented a 2 bedroom apartment for the night so we had a stove!!! And a stove meant Lasagna!! It’s the best. We had a feast. I happened to get my hands on a 4wd magazine and we have a few more ideas on where to head next. Woohoo, but those adventures have to wait till the east coast again. For now I have the map open and am reading into ... read more

Day 76 Kalgoorlie is in site as we plow down the muddy roads, the truck is caked in mud I cant see out the side windows.. the mirrors are coated.. the koala is soaked and not looking to impressed.. but that’s just to bad for the best seat in the house… I find a steep hill and side track a bit for a climb but decide to turn around about ¾ the way up since the next chunk was a rough stair case of rocks and we didn’t feel like dropping the pressure in the tires. About another 15km down the road I spot a lizard, don’t know what kind. But he was pretty big and I almost ran him over, he was not to impressed. As he opened his mouth the threaten me when I ... read more

We have been very lucky with the weather. Although quite cold in the morning, we still continue to have pleasant days with temperatures in the low twenties and occasional eighteen or nineteen degrees. Added to that, we have had ideal towing conditions with little wind and no rain. As has been our experience in the past, we continue to meet nice people along the way. NORSEMAN We had planned to spend three nights in Norseman. Luckily, we took note of advice from a number of people and bypassed it going to Esperance and back again to Kalgoorlie. It is a good fuel spot and has a nice feature of camel statues on the central roundabout. These are its only features as far as we could see. So the trick is to go to Fraser Range Station ... read more

Barry can actually say he has now officially golfed the World's Longest Golf Course which is 1,365 km long. When we were researching our trip to Australia Barry found this course on the Internet. It's called Nullarbor Links, the Real Australian Golf Course. It had just opened in October of 2009 and it caught his attention. The golf course passes through the Nullarbor Plains between Ceduna in the east and Kalgoorlie in the west (near Perth). A lot of the road passes close to the ocean , the Great Australian Bight with incredible views, but the rest passes for hundreds of kilometres through nothing but scrub arid-desert land. The area only gets about seven inches of rain a year. A lot of accidents happen because people find the drive mind-numbing and get drowsy; that had residents ... read more

Barry is playing the World's Longest Golf Course so tonight finds us very near Kalgoorlie, northeast of Perth. I'll write in length about the golf course in a few days once we're finished the whole course. It's been a wonderful drive. The southern coastline is incredibly beautiful and raw, shockingly high cliffs that drop off into the ocean. All the tourists books say that the drive along the Eyre (Air) Highway through the Nullarbor Plains is mind-numbingly long and boring but we think it's beautiful. For about two days we didn't see a single tree (Null arbor means No Trees) and the sky-line was 360 degrees of absolute flat land. One day we startled three emus as we roared past and we've seen a couple of kangaroos too. Barry is determined to see a camel and ... read more

Hi all I am updating this tonight as tomorrow we leave Kalgoorlie after 5 nights here, and head off to the Nullabor for Easter, where we will probably be out of range. We plan to reach Ceduna about Monday. From Norseman, we drove north, stopping at Coolgardie for a look around. The streets are very wide, as they needed to be able to turn camel trains around - camels don't turn easily! We tracked down artist Jackie Mills and looked through her gallery - we had seen work she had done for Steve and Lou (where we left our van in Perth). At the museum opposite we found information about Rick's relation Jim Larcombe, who found the largest gold nugget ever discovered in WA as a 16 year old in 1931. Named the Golden Eagle, it ... read more

13-3-10 Saturday, Up early & packed up, Den sneaked in a quick wash of the van before anyone saw him. Once packed up we said goodbye to Tony & Cheryl & we will meet up with them at Kalgoorlie in a few days. We are spending 2 days off road & will probably go half way today. We started off into the wind (as usual) but we have to travel, take the good with the bad. I caught up with the pics & diary on the road & we stopped at Salmon Gums for a cuppa & there was a real old pub & we ordered a cappuccino & sat outside with the dogs to drink it & decide where we might stay. It was pretty hot by this time, we pushed on & decided to ... read more
