I am in Kalgoorlie with nothing to do on a Sunday afternoon. My train doesn't leave for another 9 hours, and the town has virtually shut down - nothing is open. No shops, even supermarkets to supply myself for the 2 day train trip, are open. We arrived very late Thursday night because it's a 6 hour trip and we didn't leave Perth until nearly 8 pm. There were 12 in the mini-bus, all teachers and most of us Canadians. A trip was organized for all the exchange teachers in the Perth area to Kalgoorlie for this week-end, and Wendy invited me along. The timing was brilliant, any other week-end and I would have missed the trip. And the trip was in the right direction, I will just pick up the same train in Kalgoorlie, rather ... read more

Our trip home took the following route (and for those that have missed it, yes we are home). Carnarvon, Geraldton, Southern Cross, Kalgoorlie, Roadside stop on the Nullabour, Eucla, Ceduna, Cowell, Adelaide. Over 3000km in 9 days ( 2 nights in Kalgoorlie). Out of Carnarvon the weather started to turn. Cold, wet and miserable and did not let up at all. Coldest was Kalgoorlie with 1 degrees at night. Lucky we had a gas heater that got the camper nice and warm, until it stopped working. Apparently with all of the dirt we had been on the heater got a bit of dust in it which clogged the valve. After some much pestering from me, it was bloody cold, Bruce pulled the thing apart and much to my relief got it working. So the rest went ... read more

Departed Monkey Mia and the dolphins about 9.15 and headed out to the Northwest coastal hwy south towards Geraldton, then turned east through the Wool Wagon Pathway and the vistas and pastures full of goats, sheep and lambs and then onto fields and fields of the most beautiful wildflowers, some of which looked so good we decided to get out and lie amongst, just for fun a photo opportunity. Camped the night along the road in amongst a bush setting of Hakea trees which made Barb feel very much at home. It turned out to be a busy road, with triple road trains going past every half hour transporting iron ore from a mine up the way to the Geraldton port, would take more than that to keep us 3 good sleepers awake, I reckon we’d ... read more

Arriving back into Kalgoorlie after nine years was very exciting! We couldn’t wait to take a drive around the whole town and see what had changed. What had changed? Nothing! Well actually, that’s not true. The outskirts of town had become more populated with various businesses. There were now more clothes shops and at least 3 coffee shops making flat whites and lattes! But generally it all looked like it did when we left it. However last time we were here we had a big group of friends who were now all gone (except for Dion and AJ, a kiwi couple we made friends with from our previous work here. They have had 3 kids since we left!). So it is a weird feeling coming back because it kind of feels lonely. My brother was here ... read more

Today we will say bye to the 5 day trippers who are being picked up and then going on to Ayres Rock. We have a early start again ie 6:30 so breakfast is at 6am, we have been told we have a five hour drive through the goldfields via the town of Norseman this place is more of a village then a town. We arrived in Kalgoorlie at about 2pm and had lunch then went into the gold mine museum where we went underground and then to a goldpour then gold panning. We left here then went to a pub which had a mine pit in and you could look down it, we stopped here for a drink and it must be run by a Brit as they had a fridge with numerous British beers including ... read more

Time to leave the coast for a while. We headed inland 370km to the outback Gold town of Kalgoorlie. Its has such a colourful history - with legal two-up, brothels, race riots - even a future American President was a mine manager in a nearby ghost town in early 1900’s -all based around the discovery of gold in the late 1800’s. I was really looking forward to seeing Kalgoorlie and it didn’t disappoint. What with the 26 Hotels who can be disappointed???#!! One night we did a pub crawl - only managed to mark 5 off the list (or was it 15 - I lost count after the 5th beer!) The pubs here have such character and are quintessentially Australian. As if 26 pubs was not enough to keep Wes smiling - there were the 4 ... read more

HIYA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hi Boys & Girls over the last couple of days I went to a place called Kalgoorlie. It is A wee town in western australia. In 1893 a wee Irish man named Paddy found a big bit of gold there and then all these other people wanted to come too. It is far out man! There is this big hole there that is called the 'Super Pit' I would of called it the 'Super Duper Pit' because it was super duper. You should see the size of it, its bigger than the biggest thing ever, well apparently not, there is a bigger pit in south America. I had a really good time in Kalgoorlie. It was nice. All the best. Brian... Thanks for that Brian! It's true we went to a super Pit. The drive ... read more

Day 81 Narembeen 18/09/06 We awoke around 7.30am to find the boys still asleep. Leanne and I studied the weather information in the paper and watched the forecasts on TV, before deciding to stay an extra day in Narembeen, as it was raining in Kalgoorlie. Based on information from Des, we have decided to skip Esperance, if the weather there is windy and wet. Annette woke Ben up around 8.00am and our boys got up shortly after. Once breakfast was eaten, Daniel walked with Ben to school (for a look) and William got some diary work done, so he could go to the shop and help Des. On return from his walk to the school, Daniel also did some diary work, before heading across to the supermarket. William was straight into the checkout counter, even processing ... read more
