We lasted about an hour in Carnarvon (which looked like Skegness), and decided to keep moving a few kms north to Quobba Station, a sheep ranch right on the coast at the southern tip of Ningaloo Reef. We followed a rough bumpy track along the coast, with the sea crashing into sandstone cliffs on our left. The campsite was in the sand dunes behind a rocky beach. We had about an hour of daylight left to explore the beach. Windswept, rugged. Big shells. Clams the size of rugby balls washed up. Big rocks. Big waves breaking over the reef. Big sky. Everything just big, like we'd been shrunk to half our size. (Which is pretty small for Paula). No people about, just us and the big sun setting over the big Indian Ocean. The next day ... read more

Set an alarm this morning to get up and see the dolphins being fed at Monkey Mia. It was cloudy when we got up- not used to seeing that! On the drive we saw some emus- they really are silly birds, for some reason they see you coming then decide to dart about the road in a comedic fashion! The beach was quite crowded at Monkey Mia and it was difficult to get a good view. They feed 5 female dolphins and there calves about 3 times a day and pick people out of the audience to give them fish. Another species of silly bird :p was lurking, the pelicans whose head is far too big for its legs! We drove to the Ocean Park Aquarium next which on first sight didn't look like it would ... read more

24-10-09 Well today we are having an easy day, Den went to get a Battery box & leads to put the 2nd box under the bed. The Gold Coast V8 car races were on & Den had a lovely avo watching the races & I had a nana nap. We had tea & I caught up on my blag & diary, after watching TV we went to bed. 25-10-09 Today we went to get some fresh vegies from the “Veggie Trail” & we could not believe that the marketer’s get their water from a dry looking Gascoyne River (no water in it at all on the surface). But what happens the water seeps through the sand on the river & stores water below & they use pumps to draw the water out by bores (amazing). There ... read more

21-10-09 We arrived in Carnarvon at 10.30 & went to the info centre to find out which park took dogs & to check our mail. We then went & booked into the Wintersun Caravan Park ( Top Tourist $26 a night & $22 for a weekly rate) It is a nice clean park with GRASS & a cement slab & shady spots. The desk staff are friendly & helpful & the amenities are clean & updated. After setting up Den went off to town to check up on some “Guy Stuff” , like getting tyres rotated , auto electrician, Dr’s appointments etc, etc. I got to & did 4 loads of washing & cleaned the van. Den got home with lots of appointments for tomorrow & then washed our filthy car & it came up like ... read more

19-10-09 On the road again !!! By 8am & into a big head wind , this must be one of the windiest parts of the WA coast. We stopped at Minilya Roadhouse & filled up with Gas ($1.05) we did not need petrol which was $1.66 litre. We pushed on literally pushing the wind aside, we turned off 24km’s north of Carnarvon & went the 49km’s to Point Quobba campsite. We had travelled 250 km’s today. Well I did not know what to expect of this place, I knew by lots of reports it was windy, but as at this time of the year it is very hot, the cool wind was a nice change. I would not like to be here in winter though, I would imagine it would be freezing. We drove in & ... read more

Hi all We are now back at Carnarvon, after spending 10 days at very pretty and under rated Pt Quobba, (80kms nw of Carnarvon). We camped just south of the blowhole, at a free park beside a white sand ocean beach. It reminded us of Baylys Beach, going to bed listening to the surf pounding in. There is a lagoon nearby, behind a coral island and reef that has very good fish and coral, so we snorkelled there some days. Unfortunately, other days the wind was brisk and cool. We saw lots of whales, some quite close to the shore, some jumping right out of the water, some flapping their fins and blowing. At times they looked like windsurfer's sails, flopping down into the water and back up. One day we drove up a 4WD track ... read more

Hi all We arrived at Carnarvon Big 4 Caravan Park on Sunday to a special welcome. We'd sent our Big 4 passport to Melbourne a month ago, as we'd qualified for a special reward as we had 50 different camping ground stamps. We had arranged for it to be mailed back to us at Carnarvon. We were the first to get 50 different stamps, and expected a T shirt, but we also got a $150 fuel voucher, flowers and a bottle of good red wine! Our photos were taken, so I guess we might appear on their rewards website. Carnarvon is a surprise after a boring drive with nothing much to see from Coral Bay. There is lots of market gardening and cropping - bananas, mango, avocardo, tomatoes, capsicums, corn etc are growing alongside the dry ... read more

Hi, thanks for following our adventures. We have been home for 5 days and now have time to finalise the last days of our trip. After Pannawonnica we had planned to visit Onslow but the bug to now be home had bitten and we instead headed for Carnarvon. Carnarvon is a place Judy visited for work several years ago and we have only ever driven through it so Rags thought it would lovely to spend our last couple of days in the sun here and get to know the tourist side, so that's what we did! And Trevor we didn't forget to buy fresh vegies from the growers markets. Previously, with the caravan in tow it's been too difficult to park and buy vegies from the little places so we enjoyed browsing and buying the cheap ... read more

One of the sights that we are now getting used to is the various road kill that litters the highway. The majority is probably done by the roadtrains as, when they are thundering down they don’t really have time to stop when animals such as a kangaroo, joey sheep wallaby or dingo (the list goes on) go running or jumping out in front. It still turns my stomach thinking about all the dead animals we saw by the side of the road, some very fresh indeed! Canarvon is the only point on Australia’s coastline where the central desert reaches out to the sea. There are numerous plantations here, all growing a variety of produce, most notably bananas for export, as well as avocadoes, tomatoes, courgettes and mangoes. Canarvon supplies 70% of western Australia winter vegetable requirements, ... read more

Fri 21st of August 2009 Denham and Monkey Mia to Carnarvon It had rained heavily overnight and today persisted into the morning, that same warm fairly unobtrusive stuff that makes one want to push on. Took the 20km ride over to Monkey Mia that is on the other side of the Peron Peninsula from Denham and where the sea life can be seen from the shore. I was not disappointed as a small group of dolphins could be seen from the jetty. In part I suppose because of the daily feeding that started serendipitously by a local in the 60’s and has now become a feature of all the tourist books. There were pelicans and birds I took as frigates of some kind amidst a typically beautiful sandy beach. Worth the trip. Riding back to Denham ... read more
