We enjoyed our time in Kalbarri. We took some great drives around the red cliffs where the limestone coast made similar formations to the Great Ocean Road. There is a walk from one end to the other but we mostly drove and walked to the cliff edge. We also went to a sea horse farm where sea horses were bred to go to aquariums. It is another area for wildflowers but it's still a bit early to see a lot. Yesterday we drove the long outback road to Carnarvon - red soil, grey-green plants and not a lot else but one or two roadhouses. We got here yesterday afternoon and the first thing that struck us was - it was hot! Wow! First time in a long time. We instantly got into cooler clothes, put the ... read more

Well well well...where do i start....... From Kalbarri we went straight to Monkey Mia and stayed over night there at a beach then set off to see the dolphins in the morning. When we got there which was about 9 we were told that the dolphins had allready visited twice but they usually do 3 so they were hoping for 1 more. We waited and waited and waited for about another 3 hrs and then finally there were a couple in the water and of all people in the croud to feed the dolphins they were only allowed to choose 3. And out of those 3 was Troy so him and Axel both held the fish together. Axel was soo happy he got to get so close to them he kept asking "can i go swim ... read more

Day 41 (Sunday 31-May-09, NJJ) On the road at 10.20am. Stopped after a time at Minilya Roadhouse to refuel. Got to Carnarvon about 2pm. Checked into a tourist park. Phoned the Mams then relaxed by the pool. We got the table and chairs out and sat outside for the evening for wine, dips and biscuits for Jamie's birthday treat followed by gourmet frozen yoghurt and then choc' dessert, ooh yum! Watched Underbelly again then went to sleep. No birthday cards or pressies this year!... read more

Distance traveled 905km/4300km(21%)1 night stayed. 17th May….fired up Washongi after feeding her with gallons of the black stuff which she consumes at the rate of 8.5 km per liter. On the way out of Shark Bay we visited Shell Beach which is remarkable due to the fact that a very large area is buried under 9 meters of shells which have accumulated over many years. An interesting snippet….Australia is experiencing an alarming decline in a number of their wild life species(those strange little animals with unpronounceable names and certain ground based wild fowl).Across huge parts of the country it is the deadly combination of feral cats and foxes which are doing the damage. In the Shark Bay World Heritage area,at the isthmus,a 3.4km long x 1.2m high fence has been erected to keep them out and a number of ... read more

Distance traveled 838km/4300km(19%)4 nights stayed 13th May(day ten)as we broke camp and steered Washongi out of Kalbarri for Shark Bay,about 300kms further up the coast. The first 60kms is through the Kalbarri National Park and despite many signs warning of animals, they are scarce and this isn’t anything like one of our game reserves. We did spot a few roo’s but that was it……at two of the gorge viewing sites we took walks down to the banks of the Murchison River and it was eerily quiet with only the gently whispering wind making any sound.Bird calls were few.A silent, parched land and it becomes clear why so many of this country’s creatures are nocturnal feeders. On the subject of kangaroo’s we saw far more dead ones(road kill)than those alive and merrily hopping through the scrub lands.Once out of the park it ... read more

DAY 188 Moving day arrives again, Andy asked me what time it was, I peered at my watch and could just about make out that it was five to seven. He said “are you sure? It is rather dark.” I looked again and could this time make out the time a little bit better “Ah, it is actually five to six.” Great, another hour in bed. At 7.00 Andy jumped out of bed, but I was far from being in the wide awake club. Andy reappeared at some point with a cup of tea for me, I sat in bed for a bit and drank it. Finally at 7.30 I thought I should get up, things to do. I went for a shower, Andy said he would potter around and do things while I showered. 20 ... read more

DAY 187 What a lovely nights sleep, it was a lovely warm night, well there was a cool breeze that drifted in through the open window flaps every now and again. We did wake up at 7.00 but chose to stay in bed a little longer as it was so comfy. I think Andy was up first anyway, I know, he usually is. Today we will explore a little bit of Carnarvon, but first we take the sleeping bags and blankets out to hang on the line for a decent airing. Then I find the thorns in the grass, ouch! Mat the owner sees me and shouts across, “they really hurt don’t they!” Yes they jolly well do! After a shower and a bacon and egg sandwich we venture into Carnarvon, first driving to the “OTC” ... read more

On the road outta Shark Bay , Sandy and I stopped at the Shark Bay Ocean Park. Was well worth the stop as we learnt so much about types of fish, turtles, sting rays and SHARKS. The tour guy was young and hot and very very informative and very much into his job, which made the experience awesome. We learnt about the fins on the back of sharks and how to distinguish a man eater to a non man eater. Sharks have sensors from half the body up to the tip of the nose. So if someone is in distress, sick or mamed, then a shark will then pick up the signals from the sensors and find that creature (man or fish) and hunt em down. Raaaaaaaaaaa We also learnt about the best tasting fish to ... read more

Marg didn’t get much sleep last night as we are camped near the workshop and they left their radio on all night. (not happy jan), so after breakfast we tour the country side another very warm morning about 30 but after lunch a sea breeze picked up and it was cool around 25 Marg caught up on some sleep(nanny nap). We got back to camp about 1pm and we decided to go to Coral bay tomorrow so we rang to make sure that they were camp sites available there. Rang Bayview Coral Bay caravan park and they wanted $37/night bit rich so rang the blowholes (point quobba) next to free night $5.50. At sunset we are going back to the lighthouse to hopefully get some pics of the sun setting over the ocean ... read more

We left Exmouth around 9am and drove south down the coast to have a look at Coral Bay and have lunch. There is not much there only 1 caravan park and a few tourist shops, garage and pub. So it was a good decision not to stay there. So onto point Quobba or the blowholes camp area (436). Filled up at Minilya roadhouse at $1.82/litre. Got to the turn off for the blowholes and another 50 k’s, the country side is very flat and sandy. Arrived at the blowholes camping grounds around 3pm. The camp sites back onto a sand hill which runs some 3 k’s, after a lot of looking found 1 nice which backed into the sand hills. After setting up camp went for a walk along the beach with the dogs.
