Augusta 11th January 2012 Leaving Pemberton we headed directly for Augusta with plans to free camp some 30+ Klms north of Augusta on the Blackwood River at Alexandra Bridge. With nothing between Pemberton and Augusta we made a bee line through the forest to our next destination. Augusta is on the south western tip of Australia, situated on the banks of the Hardy Inlet, overlooking the mouth of the Blackwood River and the waters of Flinders Bay. Just beyond it lies Cape Leeuwin which divides the two oceans; the Southern Ocean to the south and the Indian Ocean to the west. Settled in 1830, Augusta is the State’s third oldest settlement. Augusta is a popular tourist and fishing destination and appeared to also have a population (pop 1200) that could best be described as spending their ... read more

While Augusta is not the most western or most southern point of Western Australia, it is the south western corner where the Indian and Southern oceans in a tumbling mess as tides and currents fight. It was not long into Australia's history that a decision was made that there needed to be a lighthouse on this corner which is a maze of reefs rocks and small outcrops capable of sinking even modern vessels. This corner is very picturesque, and for a relatively small fee one can go on a conducted tour of the lighthouse and climb to the viewing platform just below the lense. If in this corner - this is a must see part of our maritime history. For the very enegetice, there is a 100 ks walking trail to the next lighthouse up the ... read more

The south west corner of Australia is dominated bu the Leeuwin Naturaliste national park covering much of the area. Tucked in between are the Margaret River grape growing area intermixed with grazing country. In this area there are 100 or more natural limestone caves. The Jewel cave is a reasonably recent find where the entrance hole was barely gig enough for a man to drop down on a rope. The cave depth is about 50 meters to the floor. As there was no easy access, there is a total absence of bats or other life in the cave. There have been a few unfortunate creatures who had fallen down the crown vent and met a very dark death as there is no other way out of this dry cave. There is a great variety of formations, ... read more

We thought it was time Brett got a chance at a real fish after a shameful performance off the local beaches. It was time for some local knowledge and a 4WD adventure to down the south-west coast of D'Entrecasteaux National Park. It was a good day's fishing - perfect weather and the fish were biting ... for Brett at least! He was lucky enough to bring in two good size WA Salmon. Plenty of photos attached so you will believe him when he says it was 'THIS BIG!' ... read more

Oct. 14th: We got up bright and early to take the bus from Pemberton to the little coastal town of Augusta. After checking into the hostel, we did some exploring of the town and had brunch at one of the local diners, before heading back to the hostel for a bit of a nap. We then got some take-away Chinese and I managed to convince Kevin to play some board games with me back at the hostel. We went to bed early that night, as we had a big day ahead of us! The next was our only full day in Augusta, so we wanted to take full advantage of it. Early that morning, we borrowed a couple of bikes from the hostel owners and rode about 9 kilometres to the lighthouse. This lighthouse is a ... read more

We are in Augusta the most South Western town in Australia, its about 30k south of Margaret River. The last 3 days have been beautiful, warm and sunshine but this morning we have woken up to the wind and rain again. We have been traveling through big tree country since we left Albany, passing through Denmark, Walpole and Pemberton. Many of the trees are over 400 years old and huge. The trees were mostly tingles and Karri trees which are both eucalypt trees. The Tingles as they get older get really large at the base of the trunk and then with bush fire damage causes them to hollow out, but the tree stays living. Some of the hollowed out trunks are huge and many people can stand inside. Near Denmark we went to an Alpaca Stud ... read more

29/10/08 Wednesday Day 76 The weather is worse than yesterday. Even more rain and wind and even the odd bit of thunder. So we packed up our stuff and headed further south towards Augusta. We stopped first at the Mammoth Caves. This was a great attraction and huge too. Plus you get a set of headphones that gives you some audio as you walk through the cave. Next on the agenda was Hamlon Bay which was on one of the maps we have. All that is in this place is a dead end. It has a caravan park and a beach. That’s it, no shops, no nothing. So we had a spot of lunch in the van while we were stopped at the beach. Then it was on to Augusta. Another small place. One main street ... read more

After a few days of final preparations at Amanda’s folks place we were finally ready to take off on our first leg of the trip —a quick shakedown tour of the SW of WA to get an idea of whether we had; Too much stuff Not enough stuff Needed to modify our stuff Had the right stuff !!! (figuratively and literally) Certainly by the way the car felt we had more than enough stuff. The normally aspirated, standard diesel landcruiser 100 series not ever being renowned for setting any land speed records, was certainly not going to be setting a cracking pace fully loaded. 100kmh downhill with a following tailwind was likely to be the best case scenario.Still we have a year to get around so saving ourselves the odd half hour in the day was ... read more
