Well I am lovin' Melbourne. Everyone said I would and I do! The city is very cosmopolitan, there are cafes and shops galore. At the weekend there is street theatre and market stalls. I have spent the last few days soaking up the international atmosphere. I went to see a film at the International film festival last night. The film was based in Glasgow and made me a little home-sick! I got over it quick enough wiht the help of a banana, chocolate + cream crepe! Today I visited the neighbours studio and Ramsey Street and later tonight I go the infamous neighbours night with some of the stars. Hopefully I should have some photos to put on the website soon. I have been very good and managed to avoid the shops and instead I ... read more

2nd July 04 Another week, another dollar. After work today, rob and I left for Melbourne. Some strange poeple on the train. I got boredd so I got tipsy. Had a great plan to strip but naked and run around the train to liven things up. I realised it was a bad idea when I stopped laughing to myself and everyone was looking at me. Did a cross word thing with rob. Got of the train at 19.40. We met Sonja around 9. She picked us up in the car. She looed so beautiful and stunning that I couldn't think of any words to say. So instead, I just said Hiya. NICE ONE!!!! Mind you, she didn't have to dress up, she looked just as beautiful wearing a tracksuit!!!! The night was fantastic. We went to ... read more

We got a 'feed' and went to buy food for the week. On the way to the house, I managed to hit a roo. It scared teh shit out of me. At least it died quickly and that I can say I killed a roo. I start work at 7 2morro. Mick, our house mate is a great lad and his dog called buddy is cool. We went to the pub to have a couple of quick ones. A warning to the reader: At times the content of my enteries may contain more than 'check-the-box' travel stories. To your dismay, it is entirely possible that you will be exposed to the thoughts and emotions (and general streams of consciousness) I experience on my little journey. Whilst, I hope that you will often find it to be entertaining, uplifting, inspiring, witting, funny, heart warming or just a little sad, I very much intend to use this as a resource to look back upon, and see just how far I manage to go physically and personally. So please just do as most people often do, and close your minds when you feel uncomfortable about getting to know the way I sometimes work...... With that little caveat out of the way, it's time to see where I am at. Well, I ... read more

Well, what can I tell you about Melbourne? I loved it! I went for 6 weeks and ended up staying about 4 months! It was time to get a job, money was running out and in turn so was the fun. Melbourne was going to be the place to build up the funds again. If only it was that easy! I was a bit naïve and thought I would just pick up work in a couple of days, well you can if you want to work on commission only. I did an evening cleaning job for around a week, which was heaps of fun but then landed a telesales job. I didn’t expect to enjoy it or be able to do it, but when you really need the money and put your mind to something the ... read more

I woke up very early (just to see that all of my luggage was intact hey!) and then made a move down to the Queen Victoria Markets. Now…these are the true markets. Back in the day, Paddys Markets used to be like this but who knows what happened. It’s all gone to shit because all they want to sell is merchandise instead of the markets down here-fruit, vegies, and animals. There are guys standing on boxes of fruit, throwing grapes at passers-by to get their attention. I made a purchase of a bunch of bananas at $1/kilo-score! There are heaps and heaps of fruit and market vendors here, fresh fish, fresh cheese, dairy and they totally outnumber the fashion and merchandise stalls! I take an opportunity to buy Toni some more snow domes (footnote 4/3 ... read more

Can you believe this? The Tour of Booty is in its 9th day so the halfway point will be coming up soon. Today it’s Canberra-Melbourne via Cootamundra. We just left Yass-and Tash, if you’re reading this…I can’t believe that the bridge over the Hume River as the centrepiece for NYE celebrations. I mean seriously, maybe it’s drought time and all-but I would seriously like to see how you guys would celebrate on that bridge. It’s either half a party or a party and a half! You can tell that the drought has had an effect out here in the bush. I’ve lost count of how many dried up creek beds there are and there doesn’t look like there’s too much potential in the farms by the road. Everywhere you look it’s dry brittle grass and ... read more

The first thing that struck me about Melbourne was it's tram network. Never having visited a city with working trams before, this gave the whole city a different atmosphere - with wide roads and relatively little traffic on them, making it easy to get about by foot - not to mention the curious way the cars have to turn. In order to turn right, they have to remain in the left hand lane, then swing out when the coast is clear(ish). Much like Sydney, Melbourne had it's fair share of backpackers and hostels, and plenty of languages other than English were being spoken on the street. There was a problem though, you could hardly last a day without recognising someone, in my case from my hostel in Sydney. The phrase ' you'll never escape Glebe' became ... read more

For as long as i can remember Christmas day has been spent sat in front of the tv with a throbbing head in freezing cold Manchester. This year i got to spend it in 30 degree heat on Torquay beach (about 3hrs south of Melbourne) splashing around in the sea and eating weeners from the BBQ. It is a strange feeling to be away from home at x-mas eat no home cooked turkey/pototoes and recieve no presents :o( sob sob. So i stole myself a little blowup santa from the hostel which served to be the only reminder that it was actually Christmas day at all. The Aussies dont celebrate Christmas like we do aback home, Its alot more low key here, i missed it, x-mas does't seem right if it aint cold and lots of ... read more

St Kilda I thought was a nice place. It was here that I realised I wanted to study and live in Australia. Why not? I mean it is my nationality, I wouldn't need a visa here. I loved Melbourne. It looked clean, it looked easy to get around and the people were friendly. The cake shops were lovely. We went to ski at Mt Buller but honestly, the snow was horribly icy, the slopes were crowded and it wasn't the best place to ski. The countryside around Victoria was beautiful, all the sunsets seemed to explode in highlights of golds and oranges and pinks. I still want to live here. One day I will.... read more
