Manglen ... read more

I've just sat down to write another long overdue entry to my travel log, and noticed a cockroach out of the corner of my eye. The little beggar ran underneath the table top and is probably thinking about running up my short leg. So excuse me if i'm a little distracted and the words don't make much sense. I wondered why this internet cafe was so cheap... It's nearly a month since my last entry and in that time I worked a week with the blokes from Taiyo. Fortunately they had some other guys down from Cairns and they weren't nearly as obnoxious as the last guys I worked with. The job was taking down the big marquee in Sydney Domain, where they staged summer concerts for Tom Jones and the like. Again it was hard ... read more

Just back from Melbourne. Had a brilliant weekend down there and managed to meet up with everyone on Friday and Sunday nights for 2 wild sessions! The Grand Prix was excellent, noisy, but excellent! We moved positions during the race to check out a different vantage point. It's difficult to make out what is happening in the race unless you are in a spot where you can see a giant screen. Melbourne weather gets a double thumbs down, can't wait to get back to nice warm reliable Brisbane! Stayed with Ruth's great-aunt, which was great. Dale (aka Crazy D) drove us to Ramsey Street (Neighbours fame), and showed us plenty of other sights. Will be back in Melbourne in Oct/Nov for more adventures.... read more

As most you know by now, I have arrived safe and sound in Melbourne. Sorry it took me so long to write but the past week has been pretty busy, settling in and learning my way around. The flight over was very long but otherwise uneventful. In all I was in the air for a little over 21 hours, but suprisingly the jet lag wasnt that bad at all. (Tip for those thinking of coming over, make sure you fly in mid to late afternoon. It makes a huge difference.) Originally I had wanted to fly directly into Melbourne but now am glad I had a stop-over in Fiji. I was very impressed with Fiji from my brief encounter. Not only did the people seem very nice, but it was absolutley gorgeous. At the airport ... read more

Once more we are out in the South Pacific, cruising up (toward the equator) from Melbourne to Sidney, Australia. We toured Melbourne yesterday and stopped by their WW2 Memorial, an impressive marble edifice with a large military parade. It seems it was the Aussie Memorial Day, which is Feb. 13 (nobody seems to know why). Then back to the ship for a hurried lunch, after which we were bussed to the local polo grounds at Werribee Park for the England-Australia match. All we knew about polo was what we saw in Pretty Woman, so this was a new experience indeed. But it matched the image we had, down to the “stomping of the divots” between chukkas (quarters, or fifths, or something like that). We were instructed to wear “casual white” for the occasion, but the Aussies ... read more

Courtesy of work, I just spent two weeks back home in Melbourne, with a day trip to Sydney. It was very strange being home - probably the worst culture shock I've ever experienced. It wasn't just the extreme quiet of the streets compared to Bangkok, being out in the 'burbs again, the cleanliness, the lack of pollution, the weather, the wide streets, the different trees, everyone looking very white and overweight, the dreadful accents, but, most of all, the relaxed and comfortable nature of life, the much higher cost of goods and services, and the ability to spend lots of money on luxury goods and attendant materialism. It was very hard to stomach this, after living here where people earn so much less and have much more restricted choices than in Australia, and after having seen ... read more

It really has been far too long since I last wrote hasn’t it? To avoid one monolithic journal, I am going to try break recent events down into two more relatively huge rants. I figure if I didn’t write now, I would soon lose some of the memories, emotions, thoughts and findings of recent times. Now we can’t have that! The most logical place to pick up since where I last left off would be the build-up surrounding my trip home and the time spent back in Edithvale. So the trip home….. Didn’t someone once ask, can you ever truly go home? To be honest I’m still not really sure, my answer would waver somewhere between a wholehearted ‘Oh yes’’ and a ‘Perhaps not’. After six months away from my family, friends and all that is ... read more

G'day all, Fri 7th Jan Wow what a sleep in i don't get up till 12.15 so hopefully i have caught up with some sleep now and don't need to have my afternoon naps. A trip into Cowes again this afternoon to buy some furniture for Davids place and i have decided that i have fantastic taste because everything i like David seems to be buying, unless we both just have great taste! He buys a gorgeous TV cabinet and when we get it back it looks great and doesn't even block any of his view of the sea so even better. I decide to go for a walk before dinner and David decides to take me on another trek but this time in a different direction and we end up clambering all over rocks and ... read more
