G'day everybody. Happy Friday! Finally off the tourist trail. For the past week all we've seen are tiny little goldmining hamlets, fishing villages and fields full of huge woolly cows. We've been to pubs that were built for the miners, where they still have a corner devoted to gambling on anything ranging from chariot races to crab races. Haven't met another pommy for some time and all the Bruces and Sheilas want to talk about is their fishing conquests and how many Great Whites they've caught. I asked one guy whether he had a knife handy for when he'd reeled the shark in and he just laughed and said "Nah, ya need a bloody gun!" Having said that everyone's been incredibly friendly and it's so nice to meet such patriotic people. Phillip Island is famous for ... read more

We arrived on a lovely cool evening in Melbourne, Australia. After our action packed time in New Zealand our plan was to slow down and relax for a few days. We stayed in a peaceful suburb called Fern Tree Gully at a very nice apartment complex. We needed some time to plan and book some of our future travel arrangements. We went into the city of Melbourne a couple of times to enjoy walking around town, browsing the shops and eating in Melbourne’s fantastic restaurants. (they are known as the restaurant city of Australia) Near our apartments was the Steam Engine Train called “Puffing Billy“. We took a leisurely trip through fern filled forests and over trestle bridges to serene Emerald Lake and the picnic area. We had lunch and went on a “bush walk” before ... read more

Well, we're getting closer to being an actual real-time travelblog for the first time in a couple of months! Our trip to Melbourne was always going to be primarily to visit family, so we weren't expecting to see too much of the surrounding area - and after 6 months of seeing all kinds of wonderful things I wanted to dedicate time to family. Roy and Carol very kindly picked us up from the airport - they waited an hour extra for us due to Qantas's incompetence. We stayed most of the time at Roy and Carol's but also stayed for a few days with Sammy and Dean and their two girls Stephie and Christie. It was really fantastic to catch up with the family again 12 years after the first visit. We worked out that it ... read more

Hi everybody, I hope you all had a great Easter Holiday. I spent the holiday weekend in the Dandenongs, a mountain range about an hour east of the city. While they are not terribly tall, only about 600 meters high (that’s about 2,100 feet if my conversion is correct) they are absolutely beautiful. I went with Marta who has friends that live in the area, and their backyard actually borders a national park. One of the girls is a high school biology teacher, so our hikes were quite educational. The forests were gorgeous, very dense with lots of ferns, birds, eucalyptus trees and giant mountain ash. I was a bit surprised at how tall some of the trees were. I also got my first look at tree ferns. They are a lot smaller and have ... read more

Okay...so you never got the story to go along with the photos from the last few journals. I still may attempt to add some text, but perhaps not. All apologies. Here are some more photos from a short stay in Melbourne, the beginnings of the GRO tour and some additional GRO pics. I missed my first flight on Friday night because I miscalculated my flight time (brilliant!) but made up for in on Saturday when I arrived...... read more

Hi everybody. Sorry it has been so long since the last post but school is keeping me very busy at the moment. My classes, while very interesting are a lot of work! But it hasnt been all reading and writing, I have had a couple of fun distractions from the books. On Thursday I went to the Sarah Mclachlan concert at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne. Not only did I get to see a fantastic concert, I got to meet Sarah herself! She was extremly nice and I got both a picture with her, and she signed one of my c.d.s as well. Very exciting stuff. Last weekend was also Labour Day over here (I have to admit it was a bit weird to celebrate Labour Day in March instead of September). Every year Melbourne ... read more

After enjoying the sunshine of the wild west of Perth. I have moved on to the south east of the country to the city of Melbourne. At first i was a bit skeptical of the place but must admit it is the cultural mecca of the country. All cultures live here like alot of the rest of the country however they really seem to mix really well here with all the excellent festivals and parades that go on here. The weather was really good for the enitre week and managed to get out and about to the city, st kilda and a few parks and it is a very beautiful city. Whilst i was here i also had to go check out the brighton beach here as i so love the one in the UK ... read more
