We decided to head to Tasmania with Rob and Hayley for 2 nights so on the Sunday we went and booked some flights so we could join them. The flights were booked pretty easily although we are struggling with wifi out here, it doesn't seem a popular thing to use out here which is why my updates aren't as often as they should be (sorry guys!) we had an early morning on the 18th Marcia and Ken dropped us at the airport for our flight with Rob and Hayley not even knowing of we were going to turn up as we couldn't let them know if we'd booked the tickets or not! We met at the airport though and it was really good to see them as hadn't seen them since our 2nd night in Bangkok! ... read more

Our visit to Hobart, Tasmania was wonderful. It certainly is the highlight for me - I've always been fascinated with Tasmania and just so excited to have finally seen it. We went for a small tour of the city and then to an old settlement called Richmond which has the oldest bridge in Australia and an old convict prison since the island was a penal colony. We also visited a wildlilfe preserve and saw wombats, koalas (sleeping) and even lots of devils (which only have a bad rep because of their very screechy yells when threatened), but are cute as anything in real life. We also saw lots of kangaroos including one that had a 9-month old joey in her pouch! Had a great walk through an old section of Hobart in the afternoon and saw ... read more

Prisoners before 1850 had to endure horrid floggings and wearing of heavy chains, etc. But after 1850, a new governor thought he would change the type of punishment that would change the behaviours. He built a separate prison where reform would come through isolation and contemplation. There could be no noise whatsoever. Even the guards had to wear slippers. The prisoners were kept in their tiny cells 23 hours a day. During the other hour they were allowed to walk in a tiny courtyard outside. I am sure lots of these men ended up in the asylum next door! The Isle of the Dead was a small island, where guards and prisoners were buried. There are decorated tombstones for some of the important people of the time. Some years later a few of the tombs were ... read more

We finally have internet access! So we are sitting in this pub in Melbourne having supper and there is free internet that works! I have written some things as we drove along. I will copy to the blog and will have to finish another day! Wow, it has been a long time! And we have been so many places. But we have been having trouble with our mini-computer and I don’t know whether it is the computer or the internet. We left Kurri Kurri and drove though Sydney (not fun!) and finally got to a town called Ulladulla right on the east coast with beautiful beaches. The sand here is so fine but doesn’t seem to be picked up by the wind. Now we began to realize that we were going to run out of time ... read more

. This is another of 'our' travel experiences - this time to Tasmania in 2013. The collective ‘episodes’ describe our journey from our arrival in Hobart, Tasmania (during the 3rd week of October) and our journey to 'relax' away from the stresses of preparing to build (another) home. We'd thought that we could contain our journey into one 'episode', but as we noted after several days of enjoyment we have to break the epistle after a week of travel. Hence, this segment is the first of two. This 'segment' covers our travel from arrival in Hobart (and our 2 nights there), our journey to Bruny Island for a few days, on to Geeveston further south on the Tasmanian coast, before heading back north. . As background, we'd spent the past year finalising a lot of aspects ... read more

Not sure if I am putting off the jobs that need to be done before we leave in 3 days or really preparing for the trip by setting up our communications while we are away! Anyway this is the beginning.... we are very excited to be so close to departure but also a little worried about how much we will miss everyone being away for so long. I am sure that once we are under way the wonders of the places we are visiting will make the parting from family and friends worth the sacrifice.... read more

I've been looking forward to coming to Tasmania for ages. Firstly, it gives me boasting rights, as now I've visited every State and every Territory in Australia. Secondly, it seems to me when I'm grocery shopping, that all the good quality produce that I buy seems to come from Tasmania - salmon, beef, lamb, cheese, apples...yum! However my first introduction to Tasmania had more to do with history, specifically Tasmania's history as "Van Diemen's Land", a settlement for convicts and colonists, and it didn't take long to figure out that Tasmania loves its heritage and loves to brag about it. Mum flew from New Zealand and we met in Hobart, on Good Friday. It was a gorgeous day, which was lucky, as first up on our agenda was a walking tour. Our walking tour started at ... read more

Jetzt bin ich also wieder in Hobart, Tasmanien.

Auckland to Sydney Our visit to New Zealand was so busy I am just now finding time to write about it. First of all, we love NZ and everything about it. The country is beautiful, the people are friendly, and the wine is very good. The only downside comes with the cost of everything from bottled water to objects d’art. We docked right in the midst of downtown Auckland late one afternoon, giving us time to stroll about the city a bit before dinner. We found the place where we both had haircuts in 2008 and then walked to the transportation center – a converted building which had once been a post office, and before that, a railroad station. Just beyond that we saw the golden arches of McDonald’s, but kept walking back to the ship ... read more
