Great to be in Hobart with the family. We really enjoyed Melbourne. Having lovely sunny warm sunny evenings to eat outside was a good reward after al the rain in Darwin..also we hadn't realised that near the Equator the days start and end 6am to 6pm so no long summer evenings. We arrived in Hobart last night my cousin Andrea met us and took us to June's then all the family came for a meal. June is my Godmother, my Mom's sister snd she is 85 today...so we're having a Birthday barbecue. Tomorrow Brian, June and I will start touring around Tasmania. But for now .., we're relaxing!... read more

Things progressed and we were confident that the Coaster would go around the corner (and into the carport) so we agreed a price with Lawrence and Deb and proceeded to make arrangements to get our Light Rigid Licences. A Light Rigid Licence is required to be held when you want to drive a vehicle that has a Gross Vehicle Mass that is greater than 4500 kg but less than 8000 kg. Small trucks and buses (with around 15 -25 seats) usually fit in to this category. The logistics were a bit tricky as we had to (firstly) get Lawrence to drive the Coaster into Hobart for a service and check-over and then when that was completed get the Coaster delivered out to Glenorchy where we would sit a written examination and then perform a practical test ... read more

We thought that we should visit Lawrence and Deb and talk to them about their bus, now that they had finished their travelling around Australia. Georgi had always wanted to travel in a bus like theirs. We drove up to Triabunna and Lawrence kindly offered to drive the bus to Mayfield Beach so that we could "test it out" for the evening and overnight. Lawrence and Georgi went in the Coaster and Deb and I drove behind in their ute. Mayfield Beach is fabulous (but can get quite busy). It overlooks Great Oyster Bay and the Freycinet Peninsula. Lawrence parked the Coaster and then set up the outside bbq / stove for us. We said goodbye and then had a walk on the beach. We both knew the Coaster was just right. We celebrated with a ... read more

This morning we took the 11.00am Mona Roma (fast catamaran ferry) from the Brooke Street Ferry Terminal up the Derwent River to Berriedale. We booked the 'Posh Pit' tickets which gave us access to an exclusive lounge, bar and private deck. As soon as we were seated we were offered a glass of Moorilla sparkling wine. OMG, the decadence of it, we started drinking before midday today! It's only a 20 minute cruise to Berriedale, but the staff were buzzing around topping up our glasses just about as quickly as we were drinking. I had to decline the third top up in order to be sober enough to walk up the 99 steps from the dock to MONA!! From Berriedale we had a good view back towards the city centre and up to Mount Wellington. It ... read more

This morning we headed off to Hobart's famous Salamanca Market. When the market started in the early 70s it was a pretty informal gathering of about a dozen traders. These days the market is a Hobart institution comprising over 300 licensed traders who set up every Saturday in Salamanca Place between Davey Street and Battery Point. Much as we were tempted to part with cash at nearly every stall we managed to spread our purchases between just seven art and craft stall holders and three food stall holders!! We could not resist all of the Tasmanian timber products on sale so bought some for ourselves and some for others. We - OK, Tracey - was also tempted by jewellery, purple Ugg boots, a silk scarf and a handbag. On the food side, neither of us could ... read more

We survived the night without mobile coverage, access to the internet and heating!! The accommodation at Lake St Clair is true 'wilderness' accommodation with no wi-fi and no service on either the 3G or 4G networks. And we turned the heating off to sleep and we were plenty warm enough under the doona. This morning we completed three of the short Cradle Mountain walks. First we walked via Cynthia Bay on the Watersmeet Trail to the point where the Cuvier & Hugel Rivers converge before entering Lake St Clair. As we walked along this path we saw three yellow-tailed black cockatoos which was quite exciting - certainly the closest that we have been to yellow-tailed black cockatoos. Hopefully we managed to take at least one decent photo! From the bridge at Watersmeet we completed the Platypus ... read more

Next day we headed for Hobart. It was a 4-hour drive and we need somewhere to break up the drive. We were really lucky to stumble upon the Marakoopa caves. We were even luckier to just make the 12 o’clock tour and luckier still as the caves were amazing and we got to see some glow worms. We were really unlucky when we came out and realised some arsehole had stolen my camera tripod. Tried to find it, but it was long gone. Ah well. (BTW, glow worms aren’t actually worms, but the larvae of the Fungus Gnat). Arrived in Hobart and next day went to the Museum of Old and New Art (the MONA). It’s an art gallery/ Museum on an island in the centre of Hobart. It is pretty cool and quirky, with loads ... read more

An early start on Monday morning saw us competing with the peak hour traffic on the way through Hobart on the way to Kettering, lining up for the 9.30 am ferry to Bruny Island. Where else would you try driving your caravan through the CBD in peak hour…? It is a very short journey, and soon we were putting rubber to the road again albeit the last in the queue. There is a North Bruny and a South Bruny, bit it is only one island as such, joined by a 700 mtr long ‘neck’ which separates the ocean (Storm Bay) from the sea (D’Entrecasteaux Channel) We had planned to stay at a free camp just onto South ‘island’ and headed straight for that, arriving mid morning. After sinking the levelling ramps into the rain softened sand, ... read more

“Head East young man…” But before you head East, you must first head South. Many years ago I was told that 10 miles (it was a long time ago) in Tassie, was the equivalent of 30 mls in Vic, 50 mls in N.S.W, 80 mls in S.A, 100 mls in Qld, 200 mls in the N.T and 300 mls in W.A. How true that is, as the roads here are both full of beautiful scenery and demanding of the driver’s attention 110% of the time. Even the major arterial roads are narrow by comparison and with 2.8 tonnes and 21’ of caravan behind, the twists and turns require a degree of attention not found on roads in the rest of the country. And if they are not twisting and turning, they are exploring the sides of ... read more

The city of Hobart is Capitol of Tasmania, and an interesting and busy hub on the east coast. The city is built around a very beautiful harbour and Derwent River valley. However, the dominant physical feature is Mount Wellington right behind the city. The rise from sea level is 1271 mtrs, or around 4150 feet. How do you get to the top? The choice is to climb, go by scheduled tour bus, drive yourself, or in our case, go up with Anne and Jim in their Troupie. We had talked to a number of people about the road and depending on their attitude to driving up mountain roads that include many twists and turns, we received both positive and negative advice about driving a motorhome up to the summit. So at 6.30 pm we set off ... read more
