Arrival was very late on the 3rd. Just before midnight. I was depressed because my luggage somehow got lost in Melbourne. It was supposed to be a simple flight, 55 mins. NOT. Of course if anything can go wrong when you check in a luggage it happens to us! We never check in luggage because of the nightmares. Sure enough, flight delayed, Everyone's luggage gets put off the cancelled plane but mine, which sleeps in Melbourne while I take off to Hobart Tasmania and arrive after midnight. How bad can it be? I start taking inventory about what I lost. Medication, second pair of glasses, 2 x GPS's, cables, clothes, sigh.... Not to mention 16 hours in transit. Next morning. I get up with no news about the luggage, so I head off to the local ... read more

Had this little getaway booked for a few months...got a great deal through Timeshare and cheap airfares so why not? We had a very early 6.05a.m. flight from Melbourne so were off by 7.30a.m. in Hobart, couldn't book into our accom so decided to head to Richmond to check out this beautiful historical little town, a cool crisp morning so lovely for walking around Richmond. Richmond is quite an iconic site and only about 25klms north east of Hobart in the Coal River Valley region and that bridge is recognisable all over Australia. John spotted the bakery so we opted for Curried Scallop pies and coffee for breaky. Later in the afternoon booked into our accommodation at the Ramada Seven Mile Beach Resort, were pleasantly surprised a lovely three bedroom, two bathroom apartment set on a ... read more

Since returning from our previous adventure, we have been thinking about what we might do next. After careful consideration, we decided to add a trailer to the bus and put kayaks on top. A tinny with a small outboard motor was a consideration early on but getting it off and on the trailer was an issue and there seemed to be lots of rules about licenses with each of the different states having different regulations. So kayaks seemed like the best idea. We had some minor issues with the amount of "stuff" that we had inside the bus on our last trip. The walkway was sometimes a little congested and it usually meant that we had to "unload" the bus when we stopped to have easy access to all parts of our home away from home. ... read more

It was important for Georgi to get a good understanding of how to use a single kayak. Previously, we had used tandem kayaks and Lenny had done the steering (where that facility was available). The kayaks we had purchased were approximately 4.5 metres long and came with a rudder. We looked for a place that was sheltered and where we could get the bus close to the water so that it wouldn't be too difficult to launch the kayak and then retrieve, clean and restow the kayak. Cornelian Bay looked like a good option, although we found that the sand (and seaweed) could be a bit sticky in places. We took Kermit to the water and threatened to hit him with a bottle of champagne if he didn't behave. Georgi and Kermit got on beautifully and ... read more

Having made the decision to buy two single kayaks (rather than one tandem kayak) and having researched the topic of kayaks for some weeks, we were pretty much decided on what the plan was. We would aim to buy a second hand Seabird Discovery (and check it out and then confirm it was what we wanted) and then buy another kayak of the same model (possibly new). Of course there were plenty of second hand Seabird Expeditions available locally (some very cheap) but the Seabird Discoveries all seemed to be interstate. Finally, we came across some Discoveries locally but the opportunity came and went. One was too expensive, one seemed right but we found out it was damaged and one we missed by just a short time. After that amount of bad luck, we finally got ... read more

1st Feb: It was time to leave Cradle Mountain. Since our bus wasn't leaving until around lunchtime and we had to check out of the hostel, we headed over to the café in the information centre. I bought an extremely expensive coffee and sipped it to keep warm as it was still rather cold. Our bus left on time and we were soon making our way to Strahan, where we would be staying for the night. I can't remember the reasoning we had for staying in Strahan for one night but it was probably to do with the bus timetable. Tassie Link definitely ruled our itinerary on this trip. Anyway, the journey took a few hours and nothing really stuck out as memorable during the ride. The bus driver dropped us near to our hostel instead ... read more

I finally had the chance to visit one of the most charming travel destinations Australia has to offer, Hobart, the capital of Tasmania. I flew in for a short solo weekend trip, having found a last-minute deal at the Quality Hotel Hobart Airport, which is only a few minutes away from all the Hobart tourist attractions. I’ve always wanted to visit Tasmania , or “Tassie,” as the locals call it, and I couldn’t wait to check out Salamanca Place, the historic waterfront cobblestone square that is the heart of the city. I took a quick taxi ride to Salamanca Place and luckily I had arrived on a Saturday, the day when there is a huge, bustling marketplace in the squa... read more

It was a beautiful drive from Launceston to Hobart in the Land Rover, it really does remind me a lot of Scotland. I love being able to pull up on the side of the road and get a proper meat pie... gosh the things you miss! Seeing the boats coming in at the end of the Sydney to Hobart race was thrilling, their joy and exhaustion written all over their faces on arrival followed by celebrations, it's definitely not a race for the faint hearted. We spent a few days in Hobart and joined in some of their celebrations which was fun, the harbour front in particular I did enjoy and the markets were good fun, all the food and drinks available were mouth watering after living in Asia for so long. We travelled back up ... read more

Arrived in Hobart New Years Eve afternoon. Went shopping for a few days worth as we would be heading off to the wilderness next day. Saw the boats of the Sydney to Hobart race at the wharves and sat out on Kings Pier for the 9.3 fireworks. Travelled around the island for a few weeks. Most exciting was hiking in the national Parks on the West Coast and seeing wombats (and echidnas) up close. Magical island. Absolutely loved this trip, just Herve and Fran... read more

Well had this side trip booked for a few months to celebrate our mate Mark's 50th birthday...he hadn't been to Tassie, so it was about time to explore. We flew down with Tiger without mishap and have a lovely little apartment in Sandy Bay just a couple of hundred metres off the Sandy Bay shopping strip, a two bedroom two bathroom with everything you could possibly need in it...an old art deco home that has been renovated into 4 apartments..great spot! Flew down Sunday night so when we arrived decided to go to Solo Italian Pizza and Pasta...we were not disappointed one of the best meals we had in Tassie...linguini marinara was delish, as was John's spicy Calzone and Mark commented his pizza was the best he has had!! All washed down with a bottle of ... read more
