Salamanca Markets have a long tradition of providing adventurous shopping and plenty of foods to taste, either at the stalls in the market or the many cafes and bars along the waterfront and down onto the docks. I must say that I am generally not a great fan of markets, but as these markets are a Saturday tradition every week, I went along to see what we can see, and with the expectation of recording the action. We were uncertain of the parking for the motorhome or Jim's big Troupie, so for the miserly sum of $3.40 each return, we used the bus service. That took us to within one block of the market as well, so we were ready to rock. The Salamanca Markets have a wide variety of food, both fresh fruit and vegies, ... read more

We decided to leave Tahune Forest early and head down to Geeveston for breakfast and take a look at the historic town. Behind the shops there is a really good car park and adjacent to that is the Forestry Info Centre which includes a museum. Most of us will have seen the old Singer treadle sewing machines. In the museum they have the equivalent jig saws, routers and moulders. I rather think one would have very tired legs after pumping one of these machines for 8 or 10 hours per day. The centre also has a variety of craft products to buy. I was tempted to buy a sassafras slab to make a coffee table when we get home. No room in the bus. Oh well, the dream will have to wait for another day. This ... read more

Our last full day in Tassie! Went for a run, to Blackman's Bay......more tough hills. Then had a swim.......beautiful day again, forecast to get up to 30. Clare took us to the Tasmanian Royal Botanic Gardens, where James was doing his course.........a good place to learn about horticulture! Lovely gardens.......especially the Japanese one. James had been given his homework - learning the botanical Latin names for 100 plants/trees/shrubs etc. We also met the Mr. And Mrs. T, who were passengers with James and Hatter on the the inaugural Overlanding West Africa trip........seasoned travellers, although they've never got further than Coventry in England. James and I went for a swim when we got back while Clare and Rae went for a paddle.......very refreshing. Nick and Jacqui came round to say cheerio.........maybe we'll see them in Spain some ... read more

Tuesday 4th March 2014. Travel to Hobart and Dinner with Will and Ashley We had a leisurely breakfast and then made our way to the bus stop to catch the coach back to Melbourne Southern Cross Station. It arrived about 1 minute late and we climbed aboard. We already had our tickets. For the first part of the journey we were 'entertained' by two very loud Aussie ladies who obviously knew each other but hadn't seen each other for some time. The whole coach knew what was happening with both their extended familes by time we arrived at the change over bus stop. Luckily they both alighted having established that No 1 lady couldn't give No 2 lady a lift as they only had a two seater vehicle - the whole coach knew this too. The ... read more

Another lovely day here in Tasmania.........caught the bus into Hobart. Boarded the Mona (Museum of Old and New Art) ferry - the Mona Roma! On board, there are sheep (not real ones!) that you can sit on. I'm convinced that the name was thought up by a mischievous Scotsman........"Mona a big ferry and a cannae get aff"! Pleasant sail up the River Derwent to the Museum which was underwhelming at first sight. Probably because there is more of it under ground than there is above it. Unusual entrance surrounded by a tennis court, trampoline, rusty statue of a cement mixer etc. Ultra-modern inside, though with a see-through lift shaft, some amazing cliff-like walls and so on. Extensive range of exhibits ranging from the interesting to the clever to the bizarre to the downright weird (in my ... read more

Back at Kingston Beach now........had a great couple of days up at Freychinet National Park. Managed to find an RC mass at the local "community church" in Bicheno - only happens once every 4 weeks". We had a peripatetic priest who covered quite a wide parish. We then bought some picnic lunch stuff and headed off for Freycinet, about 30 mins drive away. Then we set off on our 11 kilometre walk up one of the Hazards to the Wineglass Bay lookout, then down to the beach at Wineglass Bay, then over to Great Oyster Bay where we had our lunch sitting on the beach looking at Refuge Island, and then back to the start. It took us about 4.5 hours, including various stops and lunch. There was a "beach" wallaby at Wineglass Bay, complete with ... read more

James and I went for a run this morning..........mixture of road, track and beach complete with a couple of killer hills. Beautiful morning........went across the road for a swim afterwards......a bit chilly, but we did it! See pics of house and views across the road. James and I played golf this afternoon at Kingston Beach Golf Club with Nick.....only 13 holes out of the eighteen, called the chicken run for some reason. Very fast greens, great bird life and a very interesting travelator/escalator/lift sort of thing to get you up from 17th green to the 18th tee! I've not mentioned how I played yet........we all had our moments but, for all sorts of reasons (excuses), mine were fewer than Nick's or James'........different clubs, too many screeching cockatoos, too bright sunlight etc. Nick and Jacqui came over ... read more

Back at James........got back from Bruny about 16.30. Had a lot of rain during the night but it had eased off by the tine we were up. Had a great breakfast delivered by the 43 Degrees folk. Most of us went for walk before our Wilderness Cruise and were rewarded by more wallabies, including albino ones - unfortunately I had only my phone camera. Went off on our Pennnicott cruise at 11, by which time the weather was fine. We were first on the jetty and one of the tour leaders recognised Scottish accents and told me her grandfather was from Glasgow and had emigrated to Melbourne. The trip was amazing - see pics. Some amazing cliff formations (jurassic dolorite!), blowholes, cormorants, seals, gannets, albatrosses and went sailing in a wild Southern Ocean........in particularly weird but ... read more

Tak konecne prvy trip mimo uzemie Sydney. Prva destinacia - Tasmania. Nadherna krajina, ktoru sa rozhodne oplati vidiet. Prekrasna priroda, narodne parky, uzasne plaze. Zo Sydney sme leteli do Hobartu, hlavneho mesta Tasmanie.

Back again, folks. Flew into Hobart yesterday from Melbourne. James and Clare met us at the airport and took us to their beach-side (temporary) home - just across the road from the Derwent Estuary. Then we headed up to our temp accommodation at Nick's (Ant had ousted us at James') and we all ate there. Nick (Clare's dad) is an artist and he showed us his studio complete with work-in-progressive paintings. He's working on a commission valued at A10000 dollars! There is a lovely view over the Derwent from the house. Today we headed up Mt. Wellington, 4000 feet up. We did drive, though. Pretty windy at the top (understatement!). Awesome views! Stopped off at the Cascade Brewery before we went in to Hobart and had lunch at the waterfront. Temperature got up to 28. Returned ... read more
