Happy 20thbirthday, Kieran. Not an irresponsible teenager any more becoming one of us, right? Everyone had a task to somehow use their prize today. Molly had to use her brand new princess cup and spoon for her breakfast. Fintan packed his morning tea in his Dora lunch box. ---------------------------------------- Waimea School Camryn had her bangles and Georgia wore her big sunnies to the school. (Their prize) Others brought their new pink drink bottles. This school had good skippers and great gymnasts. There were very happy kids and happy coach who were ready to learn new skills. They worked quite hard and learnt a lot. Jeremy was asked to perform his freestyle routine and he was doing an excellent job until his rope got stuck in the railing on the ceiling. Epic. Jeremy completed the routine after ... read more

It was sooooooooooooooooo windy today, seriously windy that we couldn’t even stand still while watching Sacred Heart Starters’ demonstration. ------------------------------------------------- Sacred Heart – by The UniKorns + Kieran As we got to the school it was as windy as a hurricane (Georgia). To our surprise we were going to be skipping on fake grass outside, it was like a nightmare on elm street (Ellie). We watched the Heart Starters do their demonstration as our hearts filled with wind and sand (Kieran). They withstood the flying debris and showed us a killer routine. After we did a quick workshop we did a good performance while high schoolers walked past and shouted out like talking bananas (Bec). As we finished up our routine, Jeremy got approached by lovestruck fan girls, it was sooooo cute. ------------------------------------------------- Putt Putt Golf ... read more

We could sleep in a bit this morning, phew. Everyone woke up at about 6:45 for breakfast and hair braiding session. Kieran, Leila, Jeremy and I are definitely learning more about these kids. Some are excellent to work with others, some are very independent and some are very caring and generous to others. -------------------------------------------------- First School – Cambridge This school has eight swings in a row. Isn’t that impressive. The school has brand-new buildings with last year’s BER program. Great audience , possibly the most difficult surface to skip on so far. (thick carpet) -------------------------------------------------- Richmond + Maze and a spontaneous performance by Ellie Wilkinson Our second performance was cancelled, so of to the maze we went. We drove in and park the van to be greeted by an old man named Peter with a big ... read more

First Day! Early morning! We got together at 6:20 (well most of us were there, right?) at Northbridge school. Tina G and Tim F drove us to the airport while Bec and Fintan were driven by Bec's dad. The flight was quite OK apart from the fact we had to braid kids' hair madly in order to get ready for the first performance at Parliament House. Here I asked soe kids to write a bit about our first day. --------------------------------------------- It was a very good flight except for the fact that every 5 minutes we had to change seats so we could finish off braiding everyones hair for the performance at 11:45 at the Parliament House. When we got off the plane, we met Megan and got our bus then headed of to the Jump Rope ... read more

Buenos noches! Well not quite yet but it's getting closer every day! A week or so ago I received my Pelergrino Credencial (Pilgrim Credential) from the Australian Friends of the Camino and I've mostly stopped going to outdoor shops so the time must be close. Actually I seem to be pilgrim 103 from Australia since the AFOTC started issuing credencials here. With Tassie weather I haven't had much time on the road getting fit but everything is worn in anyway now, sleeping bag and all. My boots are awesome and I even took them to the snow last week where unbelievably they kept my feet "well dry"! Scarpa really are the best I think and mine are a nice light goretex design which should suit the warm weather. I do want to have a go at ... read more

Made a gesture to the people I'm working with today at Archdiocese of Hobart. I've invited them to send a written prayer that I will bring to the Cathedral at Santiago. I have a lot of respect for the workers in Centacare, STAY, SITS and HSS and of course ICT they are doing a fantastic job. Of course the church behind it all is in crisis but then so is Carlton Football Club! Just another sign of the changing times we live in. Procured a used camera today which is great because it's shock proof and water resistant to 3m so I can take it swimming. The shock will be exposing my winterised body to the open air!!! Departing Hobart on the 22nd of August. Cheers, Scott... read more

Measuring just over half the size of England, offering rolling hills, quaint port towns and real pubs, Tasmania is a perfect holiday destination for the homesick English ex-pat. The option of Launceston airport to the north or Hobart to the south provide the more active tourist with the perfect road trip holiday. One can fly into Launceston, take in the awe-inspiring sites at various points on the island, and fly out of Hobart a week or a couple of weeks later, or vice versa. Our itinerary had to fit into seven days on the island, this was enough time but an extra seven would not have gone fallow. Arriving in Launceston, you will be struck by the much cooler climate compared to main land Australia which in the height of summer is a welcome break but ... read more

Round 2 of the airfare booking process is nearing completion. It's no trivial matter to leave behind a wife working full-time and two busy kids but it has to be done before the idea of the Camino disappears down the line. Jan 27th 2014 As I sit here reviewing these entries some 16 months after receiving my compostela, my intention is to flesh out some of the memories that made it to this blog and to leave the original text in place because its imperfection is something to be happy with. So anything in italics is new! What was trivial at the time just prior to my camino was that something had to change. That was an absolute certainty because apart from Katherine who has so far been straight-forward to deal with, the rest of the ... read more

Monday 25 June, 2012 Melbourne to Hobart This sector I know well – usually just about 1 hour 10 minutes and an easy flight.Fine, but I wasn’t expecting to have to retrieve my baggage and take it to the domestic terminal and recheck it.Of course mine was the near to last bag off the flight and one of the Etihad hostesses came up to me and said that I’d missed my connection to Hobart and I would have to stay at a hotel for the night.I pleaded with her to find out for sure and that if I ran, might I still be able to make it on time. She said “you can try”.So I did and to my good fortune, that plane was late arriving in and so would be late leaving.Great… ... read more

We got to play the original Barnbougle course today – the Dunes. It opened in 2005, while Lost Farm opened in 2010, and they are, obviously, very similar, even though the owner used two different golf architects. Loved them both, they are a real destination, just a pity they are so expensive from NZ. The dining room, lounge and rooms at Lost Farm are better than at the Dunes, due to being placed on top of the highest sandhill around. On Thursday 7th we left Barnbougle (Bridport) and came east, then south to Coles Bay where we had 2 nights at a lovely B&B. The countryside is much hillier than we have been used to, and the land is basically only cultivated in the valleys. The roads were quite narrow and winding, so progress was slow, ... read more
