After a bit of a late take-off from Alice, we stopped off for some final supplies, then hit the highway south, camping in the bush at the turnoff to Owen Springs. After a beautiful sunset, happy hour & a barbie tea we had an early night & travelled into Rainbow Valley the second night. The sunset was just beautiful, after which we enjoyed happy hour & threw a leg of goat into the camp oven for dinner. All washed down with a shower under the starry sky, we headed to bed content. And here the “fear” caught us, as we both woke at 3.30am, to an eerie calm, heaps of black rolling clouds above, and our decision to head out there & then was made! Flashbacks of Desert Storm still haunting us! As we were in ... read more

Geo: -32.4916, 137.762Well we did the right thing......maybe..... we turned south at the junction. Guess we are going home.We spent the last night in the caravan park and it was good to put the heater on. Darn it's cold. After having t shirts and thongs on for the last 8 weeks its bloody cold here. Not much to tell now besides pack up and go home. We are not looking forward to the bumpy roads here in SA. WA have such nice smooth roads. We looked at the roadside stops and free camps from the border until almost home and Mambray Creek is the only one that looked any good. South Australia has a lot to learn if they want tourists to stop near their towns and spend the kids inheritance.Well folks that is it. Hope you all ... read more

Friday 27th We woke to a beautiful morning. Some times it is the sunrise photo that impresses, but this morning I quickly grabbed Marg's camera and took a photo of the station homestead behind the camp ground as it and the hills behind glowed with the rising sun. Only in the outback in these red soiled areas do you get this glow, and it is always a hit with photographers and viewers alike. We made an early start to Port Augusta as we wanted to be there early for easy parking close to the supermarket, before heading off to Iron Knob, and then down the Eyre Peninsular for the next 6 or 7 days. The drive south was easy, but as it was still early Marg had to make space on the road for sheep, goats, ... read more

A thick fog shrouded Kimba, so breakfast was leasurely enjoyed. After loading both bike and jumping on both bikes, Henry decided he didn 't want to start. No amount of pushing the damm button would help. After unloading Henry to give us access to the battery we were able to jump start from Heidi. Then trying to keep him going while loading up again, the fog decided to return. A great start to the day. Even faced with these challenges, we did leave and fortunately the fog didn't cause us many great difficulties. Once it did burn off about mid morning, it turned into a perfect riding day. We continued along the Eyre Highway and took a small detour to Iron Knob. I remember learning about that in school. We thought that would be a nice ... read more

Leaving Adelaide, it was not long before the roads became quieter and once again we are travelling on roads with not much else to see apart from fields upon fields of oats and barley etc and seems that there is enough here to feed the world! Our first night’s stop on the road, after our 9 nights in a beautiful spacious home, was in a bush camp just out of the town of Peterborough, approximately 250 kms north of Adelaide where we immediately fell into the old routine of having happy hour with our fellow campers next to us. One couple had just come down from Alice Springs so gave us the latest details on where to get the best priced diesel as we know that we must be prepared in some places to pay at ... read more

After a late getaway and long afternoon spent on the road, the sun began to set as we headed through Port Augusta, so that is where we decided to stay. The girls made use of the caravan park pool while we set up for our first night in the van. Odyssey Issue No. 1 - Water pump in van not working! We were joined by our Victorian friends JT, Chelsea, Jasmine and Will who will accompany us for the first week of our travels.... read more

The approach into Port Augusta from the west meant we had completed the Left Half of Australia loop. Just a couple of nights to go before we would be home. We stayed in the same caravan park as we did when we started the loop. The first time the park was chock-a-block, this time it was almost empty so we were told to pick our site. We arrived early enough to visit the Arid Lands Botanical Gardens. It was rather a hot afternoon, but by now we are seasoned hot weather walkers. The garden was very interesting, allowing us to identify some of the lovely trees and bushes we have seen on our travels as well as some we have at home and at RWS. To cool down we enjoyed ice-cream sundaes of quandong, acacia seed, ... read more

After Coober Pedy, we headed to the small town of Woomera which used to be the main site for experimental British rocket and nuclear tests. We explored the outdoor missile park and Dean visited the rocket range museum. Woomera is still an active Department of Defence test site but it feels slightly eerie and artificial. There’s a really nice outdoor swimming pool though! After a lovely swim, we had lots of fun on the diving board. Sadly, I doubt we’ll ever see the day when I manage to do a proper dive instead of a belly flop! That night we stayed at a roadside rest stop with the most stunning view of the surrounding lakes and lagoons. Our neighbour for the night was a somewhat intoxicated old chap who made good company for the evening. His ... read more
