Finally the rain came and the week after we headed to the hills to see the colours of Autumn. You really can't go past Mt Lofty Botanical gardens - it has a large number of northern hemisphere trees that put on a stunning display - and it aslo includes part of the Heysen trail. You can revisit our last blog about the gardens Apple picking and Mt Lofty Botanical Gardens We saw numerous glimpses of southern brown bandicoots - see pictures scurrying around the place. Rat-like but with short tails. We visited Fern gully - although it took quite a bit of effort to get there - and found it as delightful as ever. This "Dan says..." is a video as he has gone to bed and if I don't get these blogs done now - ... read more

Today we visited Mount Lofty. A hill/mountain from which you can see views of the whole of Adelaide. It was another beautiful day and so clear we could see for miles. We took photos and picked out all the places we had been to and then looked around their gift shop. Laura has a very impressive collection of souvenirs now some of you will be pleased to hear! After Mount Lofty we made our way to Hahndorf, an historic German settlement town. It was so pretty with lovely trees and little shops and restaurants. We had a walk around and had the best lunch in the German Inn. It was very authentic and cosy and the food was great. I really enjoyed the feeling I was back in Europe- it was a little strange to find ... read more

We had the best day at Gorge wildlife park. It's set up in the hills and we had great views on the drive there. The weather again was perfect for sightseeing sitting at around 31 degrees. When we got to the park we bought biscuits and peanuts to give the animals as treats. I was in charge of the biscuits but now being an adult I didn't do the old 'one for the duck, one for Beccy' routine! (A joke my family have enjoyed since I was little!) But anyway, we started off holding the koala Molly. She was 6 years old and so cuddly and gentle. It was great because we weren't at all hurried and had time to cuddle and take pics and film so that was really nice. Laura loved her first ... read more

A Day in Adelaide Hills After spending a couple of days in downtown Adelaide we decided to get out of town and explore. Kel had found a conservation park in Adelaide Hills that would allow you to pet the koalas which we all know is the ultimate Australian wildlife experience. We decided to stop and find breakfast on the way so we set out as soon as we were up and ready to go. After a stop at good old McD’s we drove into the hills surrounding Adelaide to yet another animal park. This one was a little different because it is set up on a large plot of land with not that many animals, thus giving the animals a more natural setting to live in. Cleland Reserve had a couple of animals we were excited ... read more

The last few years I have been trying to do something a little different to celebrate my birthday, in 2005 it was rock climbing, last year an assault on the Fringe Festival this year I decided to put a line through another thing I have been meaning to do forever. So Ruth and I packed a bag and headed up into the hills no more than an hour from home to visit a place called Warrawong, its a fully enclosed feral proof animal sanctuary in the Adelaide Hills and has an excellent supply of rare native animals. We arrived in the late afternoon and checked into a nifty little eco cabin that sleeps about 20 and then went for a walk around the sanctuary, it was exciting when we saw our first Betong, hiding under wooden ... read more

Introduction This was another short summer walk, which made the Hikers happy as we were able to get out, find some serenity as well as able to tick off a new portion of the Heysen trail. Mylor always brings back memories of school camps - so it was nice to go back as a grown-up and have a look at this area again. The Parks Web has some information about the park How to get there ... From the city take Glen Osmond Road to the freeway and take the Stirling/Aldgate exit and follow this road to Mylor. As you approach the town you will see a road to your left that is signposted to the park. There is a small car park adjacent to the entrance. What happened ... My new years resolution is a quest to find more on my family history... So off I trot from Nelson, New Zealand to see my Papa, wife Heidi, and half brother Paul. They pick me up from the airport and drive me half hour into the adelaide hills to a cute 'hick' town full of history itself; Kanmantoo. The original streets are dirt roads, dry stack wall fences, and some of the locals still live in the first Bluestone and limestone houses from the early settlers (1840). They are so old they look like they're about to fall over... the houses, not the locals! The bright blue skies are filled with the squarking sounds and colours from the flocks of pink and grey Galas, and they nesstle in the tall gum trees. Down the road they're ... read more

Introduction This is one of the tougher walks we have done - our legs really ached the next day or two. It takes in a section of the Heysen trail that runs along Sixth creek in the Adelaide Hills, however this is done in 2 parts. If you are interested in walking the Heysen trail yourself then it is probably wise to join a walking group such as the Friends of the Heysen trail who provide guided walks for those who want to go end-to-end, or for those who want to just see sections. An example of an (potential) end-to-ender (and fellow blogger) is Jeremy from Prospect who is describing his progressive walking experiences on the Heysen trail. Introduction A couple of weeks ago we followed Ania's recommendation and headed to Chamber's gully for our walk - see . When we checked with her later, she said that she had seen our blog, but that we had gone on a different track than she normally took at Chamber's Gully. Apparently we needed to go out of the gully and up to the ridge top to get some good views and exercise (and avoid the bikes). We decided to give it a go. How to get there ... This walk is at the top of Greenhill Road - but for more information refer to our earlier journal entry . What happened ... This was a delightful walk - taking just over three hours. It combined some familiar areas but also added the climb as an ... read more

Introduction This walk had been recommended to the hikers by Ania, so when we got our new Push the Bush walking book by the Friends of the Heysen trail, we were finally able to locate a map of the area (Map 8) and make our own shorter walk. This walk takes in some of the Cleland Conservation park - you can find out more about this park at the Cleland's web site or on Wikipedia. Chamber's gully was originally the home of the Kaurna people. European settlement occurred in the 19th century where it was mostly used for market gardens. To fuel the growing building market it became ‘Dunstan’s quarry’ and provided bluestone for the houses of Adelaide. It then fell into the ownership of the city of Burnside and was u... read more
