Introduction Our walk this weekend was a delightful one - a 3 1/2 hour walk in the Black Hill Conservation park. This is our third visit to Black Hill. In October 2005 we did a 2 hour walk based on George Driscoll's recommendation in his book, 50 real bushwalks around Adelaide (see entry); and the summer before we did a 4.5 hour walk (not blogged) from the '20 Nature walks in Mount Lofty Ranges' book. This time, we made up our own walk. It was moderately difficult - none of the climbs were too steep, but there are quite a few of them. Dan handled it reasonably well, while I remember him complaining a lot on our other Black Hill walks, but that could also be because he is just that bit bigger at 9 years ... read more

Day 7 - Arkaroola to home! I woke when the first drops of rain hit the swag at about 2am. I was hoping it was just a light drop of rain and it would soon pass over, however that wasn’t to be the case. Dad got up in the night and it was so wet that he couldn’t get back into the swag, so he stayed in the 4wd for a bit of the night. I got up at 6am and the campsite was like a river, with everything that was left outside waterlogged. Esther had been sleeping in a pool of water and was satched. Meanwhile Dad and I packed up camp while Luke stayed nice and dry in the warmth of his swag!! We packed before long and locked the hubs so we could ... read more

Introduction On this walk, we had the pleasure of our friend Max's company. For his first bush walk, we chose Morialta Conservation Park as it is stunning, fun and not too difficult. How to get there … Morialta is located east of the city of Adelaide. I usually go down North Terrace, then Magill Road, and turn left on to St Bernard's road. About a kilometre or two along there is the right hand turn off to Moulles Road, that runs along the edge of Norwood Morialta High. You travel up this road until you get to a T-junction (in front of Rostrevor school) and then turn left and continue until you get to another T-junction and then turn right. A short way along this road, it turns sharp left and at this point there is ... read more

Introduction Montacute Conservation was a surprise, but beware, the walk is not for the weak of heart. According to this brochurethe park is 200 hectares of park, 17 kms from Adelaide. The walk we did is number 42 in George Driscoll’s book, 50 real bushwalks around Adelaide. It takes in part of the Heysen trail and the Mawson trail and because it is very steep - it provides a very tough work out. How to get there ... To get there travel from the city to North Tce, Magill Road, Payneham Road which then turns into Montacute Road. It is a pleasant drive along Montacute, passing the Black Hill Conservation Park on your left, Morialta on your right and following Fifth creek. After you have travelled through... read more

Introduction Last Sunday was Dan's turn to pick the walk and he asked if we might try apple picking - something he had noted that you can do in autumn from James Muecke's book Adelaide for Kids (p152). As the book recommended, we looked at the "What's on" section of the Sunday Mail to find out that apples were indeed ripe for the picking at Summertown from 11 to 4 pm. To finish off the afternoon we also visited the nearby Mount Lofty Botanic Garden. How to get there To get to Summertown for apple picking, take Greenhill Road (passing through the Summit road intersection) and into the Adelaide hills. When you enter Summertown, look for a large "Pick your own apples" placed on the corner of Holliday street on the left hand side of Greenhill ... read more

Introduction This week it was my turn to choose the location - and I chose a bushwalk at Anstey Hill Recreation Park. We used George Driscoll's walk number 13 as a guide (page 32) as although we have visited Anstey Hill before, we had not been on these particular tracks. The park is located at the end of Grand Junction Road between North East Road and Lower North East Road. For this walk you need to go to the eastern side of the park - take LNE road and turn a sharp right on to Range Road South and pull up at gate 18. The walk is suitable for young and old. The paths are wide and clear (which is a relief after losing the trail last week) - but there are some steep sections that ... read more

So if you have international visitors who are interested in the South Australian wineries, and curious about bushwalking, particularly the Heysen trail, then this is the park for you! Kyeema Conservation Park is near Mount Magnificent and Willunga - and nearby some of the McLaren Vale wineries. The Heysen trail also crosses it. I can imagine some very successful days with wine tasting, some walking and picnicking along the way. Some links for you ... a description of the park a story about the Children's forest According to George Driscoll, in his book "50 real bush walks around Adelaide" (walk 32), Kyeema was extensively burnt in February 1995 and has now recovered. It was also burnt during the 'Ash Wednesday' fires in 1983. There... read more
