Hello! After a huge 50 hour journey which involved a 4.00am rickshaw, a 12 hour train ride, a taxi ride and 2 aeroplanes, I am finally home, and back where it all started 2 long months ago. Before I left, everyone was telling me that the 2 months would fly and seem a lot less. Well sorry folks, I hate to be a smarty pants (actually sometimes I like it) it seems like I have been gone 6 months at least. Coming home was strange, unsettling and beautiful all at the same time. As I sat in the car being driven home from the Adelide airport the streets seemed so empty and so very clean. The world I have returned to seems to ordered, clean, mundane and right now, pretty tame, or dare I say, boring! ... read more

Introduction This blog is about our two recent visits to Black Hill. The first walk was a guided tour on the Southern side of the hill. Dan is part of the CSIRO Double Helix science club. This club is very well organised and has a stack of events to choose from and this was one of them. It was a "Herpetology field trip" to check out the Cunningham skinks - a long living lizard (30 years!) that is distributed through the Mt Lofty ranges. The trip was led by Peter Matejcic who showed us the tricks of lizard spotting. For example - one was the use of a mirror. By reflecting sun light you could shine strong light into deep crevices to see where the lizards were hiding. Another was to look at temperature - ... read more

Introduction This was a shortish walk in the Adelaide Hills called Jupiter Creek. The loop trail takes in a piece of the Heysen trail. The walk is 5 minutes away from Hahndorf - a German 'touristy' town where you can see all manner of quirky germanic things. How to get there From the city, head up Glen Osmond road to the freeway. Continue on the freeway until the exit leading to Hahndorf. From the main street of Harndorf look out for the large brown signs leading to Jupiter Creek Mine. There are several turns and about 5 kms before you arrive at the car park for the walk. What happened.. We were rained on. It doesn't happened very often in South Australia, but it happened today. A sporadic shower dumped on us big time. We had ... read more

Sorry it's been so long. Had a great dinner at Taj Mahal restaurant in budapest as farewell to Andrew and Monika, friends Gabor and Kriszti collected me next day and took me walking in the hills above Budapest, leafy and green with limestone rocks and great views of the city and surrounds. Next day they drove me to- Vienna! where we toured the summer palace of the Hapsburgs, huge and opulent, too many rooms to dust! Friends I have stood in the room where Mozart gave his first concert aged 6 to the queen, and viewed the latest new toilet from England, used by no less than emperor Franz Josef himself ( although he was not enthroned at the time.) We picnicked in the formal gardens which were superb of course. We walked through Vienna Downtown ... read more

Lady C has not only departed but has arrived- at this stage in Anchorage. Travel, arrival & hotel all A.O.K. The only glitch was in the departure schedule. I had planned to dump herself at the airport drop off zone, depart without any parking fees, and return via Kelsey Cottage for a celebratory meal. Her outdoors put a veto on this and we had the meal on the way down whilst she was still with. Dampened the celebration somewhat but at that stage she was still the one who had to be obeyed. Some of you have visited Kelsey - for those who have not - Come stay with us and we will take you. - Take & if you twist our arms pay for. Regards to all and as things move and info is available ... read more

Introduction This week the hikers headed for Anstey Hill - the closest hill to our home - for their dose of serenity. The park is a recreation park (so dogs allowed and bikes in places as well). Although we have been before (see Anstey Hill), we thought we might try a different route to see what we could see. Anstey hill is located at the end of Grand Junction Road. We entered from Range road at the top of the hill which we accessed via Lower North East Road. See the route maps for more detail about how to get there, and the walk itself. What happened ... We started our journey on Range Road by going over a fence style where we saw the first glimpse of the bountiful harvest that was to await us ... read more

On Wednesday I caught my flight out of Perth for Adelaide. The actual flight to Adelaide doesn't usually take that long, but I'd booked a ticket with a stop over in Melbourne. This added an extra 4 hours to the time it could have taken so I rocked up in Adelaide at about 9pm. Managed to find a shuttle bus, I was the only one on it and I got a guided tour from the driver who was pretty cool. Met up with Rob and spent the next couple of days checking out the city, overall there wasn't a lot to do but it's a nice city. On Thursday I found out that I got the scholarship I was after in Newcastle, was pretty chuffed about that as it means I won't have to worry ... read more
