Arriving on the Island My 3 month trek home from Australia began with a weeks sailing course in the Whitsundays. The Whistunday islands are located on the east coast of Australia in Queensland. I flew to an island called Hamilton island which is where Sunsail base themselves in the Whitsundays. Hamilton Island for those of you who dont know is a pretty small island with three hotels and a pretty big mariner. I arrived on the island six hours prior to having to check into the course and my accomodation for the next six nights (the yaght). Having walked around the island in approximately ten minutes i decided to pass the time by sitting in the yaght club reading my book and drinking beer. So, you may be wondering what we've been up to! We have covered nearly 2000kms since our last entry and taken in a lot. The rainforest and tropical queensland is now behind us! We embarked for our 3 days sailing around the whitsunday islands from airlie beach. we took advantage of a sunny afternoon and began the process of pimpin' our ride- see pics! the islands are stunning and the views from our ex-America's Cup racing yacht made a magical weekend.we met some great friends and enjoyed some of the most fascinating corals and fish since arriving in Australia. simply the only word to sum up the whole experience is AMAZING! the sand has never been whiter, the water never clearer and the company and lifestyle was a pleasant surprise and change from our dirty ... read more

Awoken by the loud noise of the ancor being raised. It was 6:00am. Got out of the incredibly tight bed and got dressed before climbing up onto deck. It was cool but the sky was clear so we were in for another beautiful day. Had Breakfast. Before long we reached Whitsunday Island and tonge cove. We then got our gear together (beach gear, stinger suites.) then took the speed boat to the adjacent beach. Once there we took the 1km hike up the hill to a viewing point overlooking the magnificent Whitsunday beach. The sand was so white (apparently so fine its like flour) and the water incredibly turquoise. Once we had taken some photos we made the sort trip down to the beach and put our stinger suits on (head gear included). Being the ... read more

Got up at 9ish. While I was getting ready I got talking to a chap called Yool (Dutch) who had come in on the same bus as me the day before. He was due to be starting his Whitsunday boat tour today in the late afternoon. I hadnt booked anyhing as of yet. We both went down to town. He need booz and supplies, I need a boat. While walking past the Magnums Hostel/tour agents we spotted a bill board with some special offers. One of the offers turned out to be with the boat Yool would be taking (called the New Horizon). I figured I might as well go in and make some inquiries. It turned out to be an offer I couldnt refuse. It was 100 dollars less then normal, included two free nights ... read more

Arrived at Airlie Beach ( so called party capital of the coast, though not that great really!) and booked onto our voyage around the Whitsundays aboard 'Freight Train' ( daft name i know!). We headed out early the next am for 3 days of sailing - prospects were good and the wind was due to be up to 20 knots for the next few days, so some proper sailing was defo on the cards! We climbed aboard our 60ft floating home for the next 3 days, and it was definately a boat built for speed rather than luxury ( guess it had to be being a Maxi Sail boat!). The 'living' area down below was ridiculously small for 20 odd people, and the bunks were just wide enough to lie flat ( only just!!). We ... read more

We took a tour out to the Whitsunday Islands. The area named by Captain Cook after sailing through the region a fortnight after Easter Sunday. But Capt. Cook was off a day, it was actually Monday, he had neglected the international date line; hence it was Monday two weeks past Easter Sunday. The Tour boat took us to 3 destinations. The first was Whitsunday Island where we took a 20 min. climb to a look-out platform. The lookout was a view of the 4th most photographed beach in Australia, a beautiful white silica sand beach; 2nd being Uluru (Ayer's Rock); 3rd the 12 Aposles of the southren coast of Australia, but there are only 7 left; and the 1st most photographed Australian sight is....? Leaving Magnetic Island and my birthday Australasia » Australia » Queensland » Whitsundays By JenztravelsApril 14th 2007 I have now left Magnetic which I was so sad about. I was having a great time and I had such a lovely birthday. Carina, Shona and Tatjana all came to help me celebrate and everyone there made it the best 21st I could have asked for. I got presents from people, a cake, and lots of drink. Tatjana and I have now come to Lindeman Island in the Whitsundays to work at Club Med. Pepe is here too, the French girl that I lived in Melbourne with. The bus journey was good on the way here, it... read more

Well i left Rainbow beach to set off for the next stop of Airlie Beach our link to the Whitsunday Islands. I arrived after a mammoth 18hr bus journey where i had to wait around in Hervey Bay for 3 and a half hours, feeling very tired and it being only 6:15am i headed to my hostel to find reception closed and wouldnt be open for another 45 minutes so there i sat there on the road with two other people and talked to them about what they had been upto, the usual backpacker talk which you get into the same conversation with everyone about. Then when reception opened i booked in but couldnt get into my bed till 11:30:( So off i went to the TV room where i tried to get to sleep, ... read more
