We arrived in Airlie Beach after an overnight bus journey from Hervey Bay. Got about 2 hours sleep, it was so uncomfortable, and just as I fell asleep the driver would decide to make a stop, turning all the lights on and announcing on his microphone that we were stopping, therefore waking everyone up even though it was 2am. He would also play strange films at loud volume, so I don't see how anyone is meant to sleep. So, tired in Airlie Beach we checked into our hostel, Magnums, not the greatest place I've stayed by far. The kitchen didn't even have hobs, and there were no table and chairs to sit and eat. Anyway, we were so tired so we got an early night in our 10 people dorm. Unfortunatley we had 10 Irish people ... read more

We left Rainbow Beach on the evening of December 27th, taking the overnight bus to Airlie Beach, where we would embark on our sailing trip. We got into Airlie in the morning, organizing our stuff to take on the boat, and leaving the rest at Peterpans Travel for the two nights we'd be gone. The trip was awesome, even if our group was a little quiet for our taste. We went snorkelling, saw Whitehaven Beach in a huge storm (rain from EVERY angle, it was pelting us...) and saw a few turtles, some huge fish, and even a dolphin off the side of our boat. We were on the Clipper, the largest sailboat on the whitsundays i believe! It holds like 65 people, has a huge deck and a saloon down below. it was quite comfortable ... read more

Hey ho, I know its been taking me a while since I've last updated my blog. Whitehaven Beach was one of the whitest beaches I've ever been to. It's made of almost pure silica (SiO2). Unfortunately we are still in the stinger season and therefor had to wear the sexy stinger suites (ger.:Quallen). Sitting in the crystal clear water I felt like in a huge bath tub. A bath tub with some wildlife... not just fishies but also nice stingrays (ger.:Stachelrochen). They swim right past your feet, but fly away as soon as I walked towards them. We also made a stop over at Dumbell Island. In one of the bays lays a small but amazingly colourful reef. Fortunately it was low tide, so we could discover the full colours of the corals. The deeper you ... read more

Easy like Sunday mornings huh! This is paradise. Hamilton Island is more beautiful than the photos portray - part of the 74 Whitsunday Islands, Hamilton is one of six inhabited islands. A small resort, this island has a community-like feel to it with everything within walking distance. The beach is across the road, and although only a small stretch, it is perfect - as we found out on Christmas Day. We spent Christmas Day on the beach of course, reading, sleeping and watching the waves - Christmas dinner was spent at the hotel's restaurant - crackers & hats at all the trimmings, it felt like Christmas and strange that we were a million miles away from home - in the sun..(I'm grinning now) Boxing Day, we felt a little adventurous and booked us (with a little ... read more

Airlie Beach is the jumping off point for the Whitsundays, a large group of picturesque islands off the coast. We had hoped to find another Port Douglas in Airlie Beach, but got the polar opposite. The main drag is one backpackers after another with the requisite cheap eats, bars, internet shops, and tacky souvenir shops to go with them. After being scared by the local tourist info center that we wouldn't find a room for the night, we booked a rather expensive hotel on the waterfront that turned out to be pretty empty. J thinks the office we went into was just a booking office posing at the true government tourist office and wanting to make a quick buck on commission. We spent the next day on Illusions, a small catamaran with a crew of two ... read more

Seasons Greetings to you all! What better way to get into the Christmas spirit than to set sail for 3 days/3 nights on the beautiful sun-drenched Whitsundays on board a 28' Maxi Yacht, called "Spank Me." Yes, the name did worry me too but I did go on a recommendation from some fellow backpackers! I had visions of a Club 18-30 style sailing trip, enough to force anyone overboard! But I was pleasantly surprised and had a fantastic 3 days sailing and diving on/under the turquoise waters of the Whitsundays! Ok...so it rained for the first two days but I'll only put up my photos from the third day so as not to shatter the illusion for you all! We set sail from Airlie Beach on the Friday afternoon, twenty-two of us on board with four ... read more

Travelled from Hervey Bay to Airlie Beach via 1 night in a crappy place called Rockhampton. This place exists purely as the Beef Capital of Australia and I ate in KFC, oh well!! Is a really strange place where everyone including the women seem to say Fuckin an aweful lot, even made me feel uncomfortable! Was a little bored in the afternoon waiting for my bus to Airlie so I ended up test driving 4x4 vehicles and car garages were all I could find. Was glad to get back on the bus and out of Rockhampton. 6 hours from Hervey to Rocky and another 6 hours from Rocky to Airlie Beach, bus was empty so spread myself out over 3 seatsand the aisle for the entire journey, which meant could get some sleep for the overnight ... read more

03/12/06 - 04/12/06 Whitsunday Islands I have to start this entry with Sunday night’s meal at Airlee Beach and mention the Divine Fish Bar and Divine Rum Bar in the mall next to Airlee Waterfront Backpackers. The blueberry mojitos and beer battered mackerel and chips was simply Divine. Probably the best fish meals on the planet! We decided it was time to splash out and treat ourselves to a couple of luxury experiences! After all it was a Monday morning and everyone hates Monday mornings!! ;-) We started the day with a 10 am two and a half hour champagne picnic on Whitehaven beach by seaplane. Whitehaven beach has 98% pure silica sand and is beautifully white. You can use handfuls of the wet sand to polish silver jewelry. We polished Jen’s earrings, anklet and necklace ... read more

Hey Well Whitsundays were great (although i think they sold it as more than it was!! but im really not complaining!!) Sailed to south Molle island on the first day - which was luxury - are you sure this was fioor us ?? were backpackers??? So after a LOT of food and some beers the sun and sailing retired some people to bed - ready for day two............. Which was sailing to Whitehaven beach..... 7km of pure silicon sand and one of the top 10 beaches in the world!! oh no!! And snorkelling along the reefs off the land there - which meant sexy sexy stinger suits (all in one lycra jobbies!) but i guess if they can save your life maybe they are worth it!! Then lunch and games on the beach before heading back ... read more
