Well, I'm back. And I had the best time EVER on this sailing trip! There were 18 of us on this small little sail boat, but it was the best group to be with, because we needed to stay sane with the problem of bed bugs and cokroaches crawling around in our beds, and I'm no where near kidding. We were itchy more often than not. There was a group of four Canadian guys on the boat who were just hilarious. The Friday night was one of their birthdays, so we had a huge toga party; using our bed sheets as togas and playing cards. Some other random sailors robed in togas jumped aboard as well, so our boat was just one big party! The first night (Thursday), we got a snack of potato wedges and ... read more

Hi all! Just got back from the Whitsundays, an amazing group of islands off Australia's east coast. We boarded the Apollo, which is a Maxi boat, and it's the only place in the world you can actually sail on racing yachts. This time the group was loads better and we had a great time, even though the weather wasn't great. Yes it does get cloudy here, and we've heard the U.K. is having glorious weather! The boat was great, we got to snorkel a few times, and though the coral wasn't quite as colourful as Fiji, there was loads of variety, and our underwater camera actually worked this time! We also visited Whitehaven Beach, which was stunning even though it was cloudy. It is apparently the 2nd best (or 2nd whitest?) beach in the world. Like ... read more

So, see ya Rockhampton, hello Airlie Beach! After another long drive (this time, we did see water briefly on the Bruce Highway though, even though it's called the coastal highway), we stopped for lunch in a funky little town called Mackay, had a wee wander and went again on our way. Funny here that instead of raccoon or squirrel roadkill, here the streets are lined with kangaroo roadkill! We stayed with a friend of my camp friend, named Pete, a lovely guy who offered to put up two traveling Americans for a few nights without even knowing anything about them! Good guy. After stretching our legs after a 12 hour journey, we hopped in the car and drove into the town of Airlie Beach that reminded me a bit of a Spring Break destination, with bars ... read more

Day 14 (June 4) I spent the night of the 3rd at an airport hostel for US$18. I got what I paid for. It was gross. I had a burger for dinner, which was almost inedible. For some reason, despite the large numbers of cows all over NZ, they don't know how to make a burger. Plus their version of ketchup ("tomato sauce") is nasty. Anyway, my room had 4 other people in it. I woke up to what I thought was this guy's last breath. I seriously thought he was dying. He would stop breathing for 15 secs or so, and then make a sound like he had been underwater for 3mins and just come up for air. He'd do that about 3 times and then stop for another 15secs. Everyone woke up but him. ... read more

I finally left Cairns on Sunday and headed for the Whitsunday's. I met up with my friends Simon, Ben and Mike and we all booked onto the same boat to sail the Whitsunday islands. We purchased the cheapest package that was available and ended up on an interesting boat. The boat definitely was not a sailboat, it was a big steel vessel that looked like a fishing boat but had a mast on it. The crew were pretty special; the dive instructor looked like he was on his way to a rave and ever couple minutes would he would scream "I love transe music" and start dancing on the front of the boat. The first night on the boat the crew organized drinking games and I felt like I was back in my first week of ... read more

For all of those who think ive done another rendition of Rod Stewart in the bathtub i'm gonna have to disappoint we did actually go sailing around the Whitsunday islands. We arrived in Airlie beach with a couple of days to spare before our sail so spent time in the lagoon here. The sea itself is a harbour so they created a lagoon which is actually really nice for swimming and sunbathing around. We also checked out the nightlife but due to financial restraints decided to visit the bottle shop first then head out on the town - from what we remember it was a good night with Jemma on true asbo form! We booked a three day, two night sailing and snorkelling trip and have just arrived back a little browner okay pinker than before! ... read more

May 6 We arrived in Airlie beach and had a few days to spend until taking off for a sailing trip of the Whit Sundays Islands. The girls are really sweet but spending this much time with a group of 8 girls is definitely starting to get on my nerves. Tom and I decided to get away for the day and hired scooter bikes for 4 hours. We basically just drive around at a maximum of 80 km/h throughout Airlie beach and its surrounding areas. I needed this for my sanity, and it was a really fun day. That night I was in bed by 6pm and up by 10am which was a much needed rest for our sailing trip which was starting at 1pm that day. Its been an interesting Whit Sunday’s vacation to say ... read more

After a week of lounging in Airlie our time had now come to get ourselves onto our sail boat out to the Whitsunday Islands, on a boat named 'Summertime'. DAY 1. An early start saw us up and about at 8am where we had to leave our large backpacks at the Australia tours office for a small price of $5 for three days. Then a short walk took us to the harbour where after a little bit of confusion looking for our boat we met up with a tall, long haired, red indian, looking Australian guy called Eza who introduced himself as the diving instructor for Summertime. Sleepy but excited we listend to his introductory speech to the group about the boat and what we were about to embark on, on our trip. He lead us ... read more

We arrived in Airlie beach just after 9am, it was in beautiful lush green hilly surroundings, with a gorgeous marina - flat sea, turqouise glinting water, palm trees hugged the shoreline, and sail boats rocked gently in the breeze. We weren't allowed to check in till 11, so me and Phil went for a wander, getting some food and bumping into Rich. I bought myself my very first piece of dive gear - a mask and snorkel - no more manky masks filled with other people's spit! We sat on the sweeping shingle beach and soaked up some sun before check in. I re-met Zoe and Phil, the Geordie couple, confirming my suspicions that we were leading parallel lives... Our hostel, Magnums, was nice, if a little bed bug and mice infested. Pottered around doing odds ... read more
