Having left 'Maggies' under threat from Cyclone Jim, we had our fingers crossed for good weather on our Whitsundays trip. Luckily, although it rained at Airlie Beach as soon as we got off the bus, two days later we woke up on the day of departure to brilliant sunshine. Our chosen performance yacht was called Freight Train, a former winner of the Sydney - Hobart yacht race, and would be our home for three days and two nights. Designed for racing, the sleeping arrangments were ...snug best describes it, and with eight people in the forward compartment pretty hot too. Our skipper Mick gave us a breifing as we motored out of Airlie Beach marina, warning us of vegemite fines for infringements of his rules! Now of course brilliant sunshine doesn't always mean great sailing, so ... read more

Head off on a 3 day/3 night Whitsunday cruise on the Anaconda III. The great selling point of this particular trip is that it also sails to the outer barrier reef, as well as the Whitsunday Islands, something we really want to do. Day 1 We set sail with a champagne toast as the sun was setting to Hook Passage (between Hook Island and Whitsunday Island). Sail for a few hours before anchoring for the evening. We are the only boat in view so it's very peaceful and calm - the night sky looked amazing with the most amount of stars we have ever seen. At the back of the boat, where a light was shining into the water, shoals of fish swam (attracted to the light) and we heard dolphins in the distance. Day 2 ... read more

Returned from sailing on the British Defender with trenchfoot. It was a little wet to say the least, but the scenery was still spectacular (well, when I could see it through the mist and clouds) and we had a real weatherbeaten skipper (cross between Croc Dundee and Steve Urwin but not as cheerful) who stalked about the 80-foot boat wearing a battered old wax jacket. Did some grinding (not coffee, but that manic twirling thing you see proper sailors do to winch the sail the last 10%). We did a lot of proper tipping over sailing, i.e. mast at 45 degrees with the low side of the boat underwater most of the time, and the 25 of us all hanging on for dear life on the high side. There were times when I thought that it ... read more

We arrived on the bus at Airlie beach and had to go straight onto the boat for sailing round the Whitsunday Islands. The boat we were on was called the British Defender, 40ft racing yatch that had been round the world a few times. They was 26 people on board including Ti, Landy and Maura who we'd done Fraiser Island with. There was also a guy on there from Chatham who'd lived in Maidstone so it was quite weird when we started reminising about nights at Strawberry Moons. It was so much more relaxing than camping, we got waited on hand and foot by the crew and the food was great, don't think anyone on board had eaten so well for months!! We sailed to Whitsunday Island, which is the biggest in the group and moored ... read more

The mad traveling has officially begun. After an early morning wake-up call in AUckland to catch a 7am flight to Brisbane, there was no other option but an 18 hour busride up north to the Whitsunday Islands. I boarded the bus at noon and arrived at 6am just in time to watch the Airle Beach McDonalds open business for the day. I would have thought that after such brutal travel, a day on the beach would be totall necessary, but being that it was technically my first day in Australia, I was eager to book passage on the first boat leaving port. The British Defender is a high tech Whitbread Around The World Racing Maxi that was raced by the British Armed Services during the 1989/90 Around The World Race. Today, it hosts sun hungry tourists ... read more

Brent and I flew from Brisbane to the Whitsunday Coast on New Year's Eve. We arrived and took a coach transfer to Proserpine, where we were spending the night. We went to the liquor store to get some wine and some alcohol for our sailing trip, and we got some groceries so we would have some snacks and breakfast for the next morning, because we had to leave at 6:00 am to get to Airlie Beach in time to catch the sailboat. We settled in to our room and then Brent suggested that I call to confirm the sailing trip. I agreed (somewhat reluctantly as I had confirmed it several times before leaving for Australia), and I called the travel agency we used to book it. As soon as I identified myself, the woman on the ... read more

We hung out in Airlie Beach for a couple days anticipating our sailing trip around the Whitsundays. We crossed paths with Helen, Julia & Ashtona and got to hang out with them which was really fun! They had a fantastic time on their trip so it made us all the more excited! We boarded ship and the sailboat itself was amazing & pretty big. Our schedule for the next three days was basically being lazy on the sailboat while sailing to the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen mixed in with some snorkeling. Can't beat it! All of our favorite beach was Whitehaven, it was so beautiful, absolutely indescribable. We were all really sad when we had to leave the boat because this trip was all of our favorites so far!!... read more

Ahoy! (yes this is cheesy, but we're running out of salutations for these entries) Just got back to Airlie Beach after a wonderful sailing adventure in the Whitsunday Islands. For three days and two nights we (and 35 other people) were packed onto a 100 year old sailboat called the Defender. As it didn't have any gun ports in the sides, we wondered exactly how the boat got its name. Thankfully, this boat was not one of the "party boats" packed with 18 and 19 year olds drinking all night long.....this one carried a variety of people, most in their early 20's to mid-30's ---- finally we run into our own demographic!! There were Aussies, Brits, Germans, Danes, New Zealanders, Korean, Irish, and us. Quite the floating united nations. Most people were a joy to hang ... read more

The boat was officially buggered so we just spent this morning crawling back to Airlie Beach! We put the sails up and i was in charge of navigating/working the rudder, and thankfully managed not to crash us into anything. It was killing my arm after about 5 mins but i managed to do it for about an hour and made Lucy take lots of cheesy photos of me pretending i knew what i was doing. It was a shame to say goodbye to the others, and also we were missing out on the group night out as we were getting the bus at 8pm, but i have to say it was quite nice to be back on dry land as feeling sea sick is exactly like having a hangover and we'd all been suffering a bit. ... read more

Got woken up at 6am by Stefano getting the anchor up which was of course attached to our room(!) so chains were clanging like crazy for 10 minutes. We set off and the boat was rocking really badly so Lucy went up on deck feeling queasy. I was fine at first and even pigged out on a whole fruit and nut bar as i was so starving, but unfortunately as soon as i saw up i puked the whole thing up! Nice. Felt really rough, like most people, so we just sat on deck and tried to eat breakfast. We moored in a bay and got the dinghy onto the beach where we walked to Hill Inlet (next to Whitehaven Beach, the most photographed beach in the Whitsundays) where we could sunbathe on the fine, white, ... read more
