Airlie Beach may simply be the launching point to the spectacular Whitsunday Islands, but people here sure know how to take advantage. Little more than a 1-street yacht village, there are only 2 things to know about Airlie Beach: man-made lagoon, not beach and Vegas-like nightlife. But the main event is the 3-day sailing trip to the stunning Whitsunday Islands, which draws in vacationing Aussies, foreign backpackers and local boaties alike. Like Fraser, this trip is again all about the people on your boat and again, my group was top notch. While other boats were party boats, our focused was on the transcendant world beneath the sea. I nearly gave up after one scuba dive, due to a case of swimmers' ear and bad pressure buildup, but thank God I sucked it up and dove ... read more

G'day! After a couple of sleepless nights in Rockhampton due to my uncanny knack of picking hostels in the noisiest part of towns (ie the red light districts!) when Suze, Brenda and I arrived in Airlie Beach we were all looking forward to getting a good kip before heading out on the boat to sail round the Whitsunday Islands for a few days. We had a pretty chilled out night but were out of luck with sleep since the hostel we stayed at, "Magnums", was definately a party hostel with the tunes blaring out till 5.30am. So we were all half dead the following day when we made our way down to the marina to board our home for the next few days "The Clipper" sailboat. Brenda and Suze were delighted to see a couple of ... read more

The Whitsunday Islands are in Queensland and are just north of Brisbane. They are made up of 74 different islands, each one is gorgeous. Anyways, back to the trip. When we got to Whitsundays we stayed in a beach town called Airlie Beach. It was a very cool town with only one main strip and other than people sailing, it was all locals. The next morning, after our night i... read more

So we headed down to Airlie beach having booked our Whitsundays trip in Cairns, we were heading to meet 2 lads we had spent some time with in Cairns, Adam who as it turns out is from Camberley also although we have never met and a lad Nick from Nottingham who had been traveling with Adam, we couldn’t get on the same boat trip as them but booked ourselves onto a 25 person, retired racing boat for 2 nights and 3 days on the legendary Whitsundays. We arrived in Airlie which was our hop off point to the Islands at about 5pm and checked ourselves into The Beaches hostel, having confirmed our place onto the boat the next day, we both agreed it would be rude not to make the most of happy hour, a decision ... read more

Greetings from Airlie Beach, the gateway to the majestic Whitsunday Islands. Its 74 islands are surrounded by one of the world’s seven natural wonders, the Great Barrier Reef and are well worth a visit. In fact, I would go so far as to say that our 3 days sailing around the Whitsunday Islands has been my favourite activity here in Australia. On Friday (18th of May), myself, Brenda and Linday arrived on Airlie Beach and checked into "Magnums" hostel into our deluxe bungalow (by deluxe I think they meant it had a roof and running water, ha..). After this we headed over to ABC travel for a brief about our 3 day adventure onboard "The Atlantic Clipper," a 140 foot boat, that came highly recommended and lived up to its name. The boat itself had 3 ... read more

Me and the girls arrived into Airlie Beach on Friday ready to set sail on our big adventure to the Whitsundays the next day. This was to be one of the highlights of our trip and of the package we booked so we tried to be pretty sensible, get organised, showered and get to bed early at Magnums hostel as we had been warned that we would not be getting much sleep on the boat! But our good intentions were in vain as our dorm room turned into party central throughout the night as the girls we shared with went a bit mad! So we woke the next morning looking and feeling like crap! But we plodded on down to the marina armed with our booze in plastic bottles and our clothes in eco bags ... read more

Sailing the Whitsunday Islands + 1 dive From 21st of May till the 23rd we sailed the Whitsunday islands with Pegasus sailing boat. The islands were mostly covered with rainforest/ bush and white sandy beaches. The most beautiful was the White haven beach, surrounded by many different colors of water. We did one dive at Hook island. The diving was not so special and we were about to go to Cairns / Outer reef, which should be better for diving, so we didn't do any more dives here. We were with a nice group of people so we spend some nice days on the boat and snorkelling. The last night we went to a pub at one of the islands and decided to make it a Pirate Party so we dressed up as pirates. Many ... read more

The bus ride from Mission Beach to Airlie lasted about 8 hours and for most of it there were only 10 of us on the bus - having two seats to myself was luxury! We had a couple of of breaks on the way down and as most of us were staying on until Airlie I soon ended up chatting to a few people and trading travel stories with a Scottish guy called Harry. We arrived in Airlie to see the most amazing sunset over the harbour... by the time we actually got off the bus 10 minutes later it was dark and pouring with rain :0( I'd tried to call ahead to book a hostel for the night but was told there was no need to book because they always sent a minivan down to ... read more

4/29/07 Got an early start this morning - took a shuttle bus to the Brisbane Airport for our flight to the Whitsunday Coast. The Whitsundays are a group of 74 islands, only 8 of which have resorts on them. They’re located off the northeast coast of Australia and are amongst the Great Barrier Reef. We spent the night in Airlie Beach, which is on the coast and is a hub for arranging sailing trips around the Whitsundays, daytrips to parts of the Reef, or transportation to and accommodation at the islands. We signed up for a 3 day/3 night sailing trip aboard Whitsunday Magic (a tall ship), leaving the following afternoon. There are a ton of options, so after going well over budget (the accountant side of us shinning through….), we hoped we made the ... read more

I think we were a bit breathless still from the Fraser Island trip to be honest that we didn't really notice the fact that we had a 14 hour bus trip from Rainbow Beach to Airlie Beach. Oz is so big that the bus journeys seem to blend into one another and you get used to it. "Just down the road" to a North Queenslander means anything between 2 and 12 hours. Understatement is a way of life in these parts. We'd booked 3 days and 2 nights abourd The Atlantic Clipper for Lee's birthday, and so any trip to The Whitsundays leaves from Airlie Beach, another backpacking favourite on the East Coast trail towards Cairns. It's a lot bigger than Rainbow and therefore there's lots more to do and the whole place caters towards travellers. ... read more
