Hello to you. This is my first travel blog entry. I will try and update it as often as possible including photos. I will relay to you all the news so far and the plan for the next few weeks. At the moment we ('we' being my family, George and i) are in Townsville, Queensland. It is a small army barracks town where my family have moved to from Sydney. The climate is very Tropical with blazing heat and monsoon like rains, the locals call it "Brownsville". We have been here for a month and my summary is although there is not that much to do and the Nightlife is pretty poor, the awesome weather means if you wanted you could have a 'barbie' every evening and plan anything in the day. Also the wondorous Magnetic ... read more

Today we travelled by Greyhound to Townsville. The weather decided to tip it down, still it didn't matter, we were on a coach watching another cheesy film (Dr. Doolittle 3!). We arrived in Townsville late afternoon and were picked up by the hostel in their mini bus. The driver obviously thought he was taking part in the grand prix and sped round the town, flying over the speed bumps. We clung to our seats, the rucksacs flying about the van before coming to an abrupt halt outside our new home for the night - the Civic Guest House. We didn't get the most welcoming greeting...in fact we barely got a grunt of acknowledgement! The receptionist was more interested in having her cigarette than us. She did manage to mumble where our room was. Our room was, ... read more

Well after being here for almost a month now we have eventually actually done some travelling. The 5 hour journey from Cairns to Townsville was going to cost us about 40 squid each on the bus. However a few days before we planned to leave, we met two German girls who owned a camper van... very handy. It is possibly the worst mode of transport I had ever done but it was only going to cost 8 pounds each in petrol money- a bargain. So we set of at 10am from the youth hostel in Cairns, heading south for Townsville, it is the next big town down the coast and I have relatives there so we plan to spend about a week here. After a splendid journey with the Germans we were dropped off on the ... read more

Hi everyone, and welcome to our travel journal. Jeff and I will attempt to update this site as often as possible for your reading pleasure. Jeff left Townsville a couple of days ago on the overnight train so for him the adventure has already begun. I on the other hand have to wait until after christmas for the joy of spending 24 hours in a moving metal box with screaming kids as a soundtrack. I can't wait. I'll be in Gladstone on the 12th of January and then Brisbane on the 15th. Then on the much anticipated 17th of January we will fly out to Bangkok and finally get this whole thing on the road.... read more

We arrived in Townsville after dark. Driving down the Strand we noticed some type of winter carnival/concert going on in the park. We later learned it was a living nativity. After finding a hotel and settling in, we set out for dinner and found town to be absolutely hopping. Large groups of young women in short skirts and heavy makeup were out on the town for the evening, as were clumps of guys with short hair having beers. Turns out Townsville is home to a huge military base which explains the party atmosphere in town on a Thursday night. All over this part of Australia, we saw people driving "Utes" or what looked to us like new El Caminos. These car/truck combos are extremely popular here for some reason. We would have thought everyone in Australia ... read more

Hej folkens/mates.

Today we were up early for a very special breakfast at Bungalow Bay Koala Village on Magnetic Island. This is a very special breakfast that only takes place a few times a month serving: Champagne (well it would be rude not to!), local tropical fruit, bacon, sausages, egg, barramundi, pancakes... well the list goes on, as the good backpackers we are (feeling more and more like skint students every day!) we filled our faces! While doing so, the rangers brought round a 2 year old salt water crocodile to stroke, a 2 metre carpet python and a koala all whilst being surrounded by lizards, a very friendly cockatoo and a rock wallaby. Then came the best bit, the chance to hold a Koala - this is something that I had been waiting to do since a ... read more

Today we took the train down to Townsville to start our journey down the Coast. We were actually quite sad to be leaving Cairns. Many backpackers we saw weren't that enamoured with the place - but we absolutely loved it, and it is a wicked base to so much stuff. Whilst we have loved the places we have gone to on our tips, we have both realised how much we like having stuff around us - decent places for food, a taxi when you need it, places to go out or go for a drink etc. Some of the more remote places we have seen have next to nothing! Cairns is also growing rapidly - in the last few years the population has exploded from around 20,000 to just over 140,000. It is also sprawling up ... read more
