Don't ask us what attracted us to Magnetic Island! We left Cairns and the rain last Tuesday and travelled down the coast by train to Townsville, a very small but pretty town. Luckily the weather improved and we have had virtually uninterupted sunxhine since we arrived. (Up until today that is; we have ducked in here to get out of a downpour.) Our week has been much the same old same old; walking around the area, strolling along the beach front, relaxing, eating and having the occassional glass of Sherry. We went for a visit to the nearby Magnetic Island, which whilst being very quiant and pretty, suffered from the influx of the 'tourist trade' which has left the place scarred with countless developments and eyesores. One beach, Horshoe Bay, was pretty OK but because of ... read more

The highlight of our stay in the top end is Kakadu national park, a area the size of whales encoumpasing Aligator creek and its catchment basen all the way to the sea. The park is one of the most diverse national parks in the world and therefore gets the increasingly common title of 'World Heratige area'. through the middle of the park a great wall and platau streaches for thousands of Kilometers, atop this platau is the aborigonal Arnhem lands, but beaneath lies Kakadu (with the exception of a few Uranium mines!). Numerous spectacular waterfalls run from atop the paltu down the sheer rock, into cool pools and Monsoon forest, while there are also huge Wetland areas, grassy plains, scrub bush, Euclypt forest, dry forest, and patches of rain forest. All with their associated wildlife, and ... read more

My last night in Cairns was fantastic. I went to the Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow...reminded me how much I absolutely love stand up comedy. The following day I got up relatively early to make my way to the train station the other side of the city. Here I boarded the Sunlander which is a train that goes all the way down the east coast to Brisbane, although my ticket was for travel to Townsville...you know, on the map it only looks a small way down, but no...7 hours on the train! I was so glad the seats were comfy, and reclined a good way back. So yes, my journey consisted of sleeping, eating my packed lunch, sleeping, gazing out the window, listening to music, sleeping, and finishing my latest book Da Vinci Code...I couldn't put it ... read more

Stayed in this gorgeous hostel right on the beach in these funky little beach huts and at last the weather got good!! 04.04.06 When we left Airlie today it was chucking it down, a good day to leave. It was only a 4 hour journey up the coast to Townsville. Got booked into Reef Lodge, very nice room we even had our own fridge, toaster and kettle!! That afternoon we went for a walk along the strand (sea front) and checked out the cinema times for tomorrow. Like most other beaches up North of Australia you can't swim in them because of stingers. The town is quite spread out, not a lot to see or offer. It has quite a scenic backdrop in comparrison to other towns. It had Castle Hill over looking the town which gave it a bit of character. Townsville is the gateway to Magnetic Island, which we are unsure if we are doing yet. ... read more

Summary: I've been struggling (not that much) against north, north-easterlies as I'm crossing largish bays to Townsville (where are the south-east trade winds that are suppose to blow day and night in this area this time of year?). Day 61 Abbot Point There's a large pier here where they load coal. I don't think one is supposed to land here, but, the place look deserted, and the beach looked good, so I did. When I took off (at 2 in the morning), I did see some activity on the pier. Day 62 Cape Upstart On landing, I met the "mayor" of Cape Upstart - Andy (he kind of watches over the (mostly deserted) vacation homes on the cape. He invited me up for a meal of grilled stakes and onions - that sure hit the spot. ... read more

We stopped here for a few days, and was pleasantly surprised. The town has spent alot of money recently, and invested alot of effort in making this a well worth while place to visit. We treated ourself to a day at the aquarium, which was good fun. We also got in our first game of live rugby.....North Queensland Cowboys, versus Manly Sea Eagles. 25,000 people for just a normal league game was a pretty impressive crowd.... read more

We spent the day today down at the Reef HQ, Townsville's own aquarium which was awesome. It features a huge tank with hundreds of coral reef, fish and predators in including sharks, sting rays and green sea turtles. It was a stunning visit where I was able to take some pretty cool photos as hopefully you will agree. Mike... read more

This morning we sent on a short foot tour of Tonsville to get our bearings for the next couple of days. Its nice to be back in a town that is big enough to have good facilities, and in a picturesque setting. Our hostel is located next to the marina, a short stroll into the heart and sould of townsville town centre, which at night reminded me of something out of Miami with all the neon pink and blue street lighting, pretty and aluring. Having spent the morning taking photos and acquainting oursleves with the town ssettled down for a swim at the hostel pool and catching up on some reading and work emails... Mike... read more

Another early start this morning so that we could break out of the northern territory and enter Queensland, which we managed to do in just under 11 hours after having driven 900km from Mount Isa to Townsville on Queenslands east coast, where we stayed at the Adventurers Resort, a huge hostel with undercover parking, huge kitchen, friendly staff and over 300 beds available.
