Considering that we want to start doing some overnight hikes, we thought it best that we do a couple of shorter hikes first so it won't be such a shock to the system when we eventually do an overnighter ;) We managed to rope our good friends Matt and Carly into coming along as well and it gave us a good opportunity to test out our new boots :D For our hike, we headed to the Sunshine Coast to check out the Great Walks that one of Kate's co-workers told her about. The Queensland Government has been working on a "Great Walks" project for a while that provides walks of various lengths for those keen to experience a bit of the outdoors. The Great Walks are split up into various sections and you can pick which ... read more

Leaving Port Douglas.... Tasha and I had arranged a transfer at 3:30 am from Port Douglas to Cairns to catch our 6:00 am flight to Brisbane. Unfortunately our transfer didn't show up and we had to wake up the hotel manager to get the next transfer for us, at 4:30 am. As it is at least an hour drive to Cairns, we were worried we would miss our flight... and sure enough, we did. I was pretty upset, but thankfully there was space on the 11:00 am flight and from there everything was smooth (the flight and the transfer from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast). I arrived on the Sunshine Coast on December 24th (Brent's birthday). He is house-sitting his coach's house, which is right across the street from the ocean! This is where we're staying ... read more

... read more

Escaping Brisbane we continued on our epic Greyhound journey stopping at Noosa Heads on the "Sunshine Coast". The wooden C19th YHA ("Halse Lodge") deserves a special mention as being a top place to stay even if the dorms are a touch on the small side. It was worth it just to watch the scores of lorikeets and parrots going about their business screechingly and squawkingly in the trees surrounding the building. We had two objectives when we arrived in town: The first was achieved the next day as we spent a full fun packed day at Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo. Starting with the 90 minute documentary shown on the courtesy bus to Beerwah to the shows (lots of big crocs and snakes and tigers etc.) to the contact sessions with the animals and demonstrations and talks ... read more

On Thursday morning I experienced my longest bus ride in Australia, something that I successfully managed to avoid so far. I leave Byron Bay at 6:45AM and get to Noosa on 1:00PM, exhausted. I spend the afternoon in Noosa itself, a very richy town: expensive restaurants, elegant shops, elegant people. And of course there are beautiful houses, many of them beside the river and the many canals, and they have amazing yachts, which remind me a lot of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida USA. My hostel is a bit remote and I miss the shuttle bus so I walk back. On the way I spot a beautiful small park on the Noosa river. I buy a Cider bottle and sit a rock on the river side, reading my book. Only the approaching sunset makes me go back to ... read more

Hello to you all. I know it has been a little while since I have last updated, but I have been enjoying some restful time to write and read and take in the surroundings. My time in New Zealand finished up well, I attended my first professional rugby match, which was quite entertaining, then I spent a few days in ChristChurch enjoying the museums and art gallery's. My first stage of my time in Australia was spent in Queensland. I flew into Brisbane and was met by a friend I made over in New Zealand. He showed me the sights around the city, including some beautiful botanical gardens then took me out to the Gold Coast for a day. This part of Australia has been built up a lot in the past few years, do to ... read more

Well, we survived our 3 day sailing trip (even though someone brought bananas on board - v. bad luck) so we aren't totally jinxed when it comes to boats. The Whitsundays really are as beautiful as the pictures and we had a great crew (who were all younger than the passengers!) Made lots of new friends, including a Dodgers' fan, which made the trip for Karl. We all slept on deck under the stars and with the help of lots of medication (and beer) I managed not to throw up once. Once back on land we had a little farewell party with everyone in Airlie Beach and made our way down to Hervey Bay the next day. Back to the beach now...... read more

I always require 8 hours sleep and I don’t really like anything less and anything more is a bit worrying! The humidity (more than anything) got me up (again) and it was a while before Jess could get up. I’m updating the diary at this time, since there’s nothing better that I can think of doing-well I can’t watch tele…Jess will wake up! Sleep is goooooooooooood! I’m not one to interrupt people’s sleep-for instance, Robbie never got up at 10am like he asked-I think that even though a bit too much sleep is a bit worrying, sleep is goooooood! Besides, Robbie is such a heavy sleeper! ;o) Today, Lib & Jess were taking me out for a bit of op shop shopping down at Maroochydore! And just like last year’s trip, there was the game ... read more

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan is it hot today or what? Hotter than yesterday they think! Not sure but the humidity was sure a killer. Robbie didn’t wake up at 10am like he hoped, but he could turn that 9 hr drive back to Coonabarabran into a 7 hr drag race. I was hoping for some of Jess’ fine ground coffees that I had the last time I was here, but I was greeted with, “Meh-I’m too lazy to make it for you, Johnny*”… The sound of water boiling and the aroma of instant coffee slid into Robbie’s dream world and brought him up. Bearing in mind the big journey he had left, he had to leave early. I think he was planning to drop in on the Ippy girls to get a running report on the casualty rate ... read more
