Hello everyone. We have a little more time today to update the diary more fully. Let's start with our last day in Airlie Beach. Despite having to vacate our apartment by 10am our hosts kindly let us park our luggage until our link bus arrived at 6pm. What to do for 8 hours? mmmm. Well we had made ourselves a picnic and decided to go for a long stroll along the boardwalks and seashore. We got so very, very hot we decided to stop at a nice beachside bar for a midday drink. SILLY. We only got embroiled with a group of people who had taken the afternoon off to celebrate one of their party's birthday. A great bunch of people who very nearly persuaded us to stay and go on to the 'official' party later ... read more

Okay, so I've been wanting to say that for so long and now I have the chance (even if people stare at me all funny, haha). Well, after fully recovering from partying Sydney style, we said goodbye to the weekend and got excited for the week (not that it makes a difference for us when we're traveling, since every day is a weekend, :)~~~~~ ) Monday morning, we headed down to Manly again with the intention of taking the ferry to the Taronga Zoo, but opted for the quicker bus instead. The zoo was fantastic. It sits right on the other side of the harbor so the views of the Opera House and bridge are fantastic, especially where the giraffes hang out. We wandered first through Wild Australia, where we saw koalas, kangaroos, emus, wallabies, wombats ... read more

Thursday 25 May. Chilly nights mean bright cloudless days. In Maroochydore a heron with a cloak of grey feathers. Those pterodactyls, the pelicans, one with a meter long fishing line glinting in the sun (caught on foot). I read in the paper a record May low. Minus two in Gimpie. Swim and a schooner at Surf Club. All's well. Stamped another 300 stickers at library. They can't stop me now. Huge piece of fish (plus chips) at harbour ($7). A guy told me an article appeared in The Gold Coast Bulletin with colour photo. That covers the stretch from the border to Brisbane!!! I'm trying to remember the interview.... read more

Sat 20. Given marching orders doing Southbank. Idol aspirants. Spoke to camera guys. One got sticker. Told his story of threats in his line of work. Later in town pleasant Saturday morning in May Brisbane with lots of places to go. Lunch at the Irish Club, lively sidewalk scene. Brown headed ducks in park. Spoke to Aboriginal stall holder re dots. Not keen on snake (Christian) liked track. Sunday 21. Bye bye Brissie. Just thought small coastal town easier. Stopped at Bribie Island - flat, sand. Views to mountainous Moreton Island. Birds of prey hunting. Arriving Caloundra caught the tail end of crafts fair. Went through like a hot knife through warm butter. Stallholders keen. Very pretty estuary and featureful head. While swimming caught sight of bird circling with prey in talons. It seemed a victory ... read more

This is the last blog from Oz after spending nearly 5 months in this lovely country. The last three weeks have been spent here based in Queensland with Ron & Jen, we met them for the first time 4 years ago in Western Australia and have kept up the friendship since then. This was the first time we had the opportunity to come and stay with them in their fabulous home and meet their family and friends and experience living a typical Queensland life, can't thank you enough R & J for being so hospitable :-) :-) we shall miss you. It has also given us the chance to discover all the lovely new rellies we didnt know we had and to be shocked to realise there are probably more of them here in Oz than ... read more

finally arrived at the forbes mansion - due to our slight detour, kids were in bed so the forbes outdoor veranda entertainment commenced straight away and we had our first proper aussie barbie !!! it was great to see them again, catching up on memories of mad ski trips and maureen's toe examination !!!!! woke up early for the forbes family morning school run chaos - what gorgeous kids. Funny Brandon is just a mini-forbes and Kimberley and Annabel are mini-Mo's. And what a school they're at !!! no graffitti, fighting or police!!! Never been a proper school. Fantastic place with sporting facilities that would go some way to explaining why the aussies tend to be winning most things at the moment. In an attempt to reverse this phenomenal success Forbes & I took the the ... read more

Ailsa and I visited Mary Cairncross and Kondalilla Falls with Lou and Rob. Took stacks of photos, many are grainy and blurry because it's very hard to take photos in dim and speckled light. Attached are some of the one's that turned out OK. Mary Cairncross is a tiny reserve packed with wildlife. Unfortunately the humans were out in force and most of the fauna had sensibly decided to stay home. We did spot a few pademelons including a joey and its mum as well as quite a few swift little birds and even heard the elusive cry of the Cat Bird. But no sightings. It's very shy. We spent ages in Mary Cairncross. The walk is supposed to be around 40 mins but we found everything fascinating and took it very slowly. Plus I was ... read more

March 28, 2006 We have just had the last two days in Mooloolaba. Isn’t that a great name? It is aboriginal, as are many of the names around here. Mooloolaba is a resort town on the Sunshine Coast, going north from Brisbane. We picked up a rental car in Brisbane and drove in just over an hour to Mooloolaba. Chris and Graeme have a small “flat” - apartment in a resort there right on the beach and they were gracious enough to let us use it for 3 nights. How wonderful - we had a great time. They say that Queensland only has two types of weather: really wonderful and perfect - and it was! So, on the first full day: and now I have to apologize to Patrick as I know how he feels about ... read more

Last few days in Oz so it’s time to hire the first car of our trip. Pick up our tiny Hyundai Getz, head off on the Gympie Road, then the Bruce Highway (Yep, it’s really called that), finally the Sunshine Motorway. 80 minutes after setting off we find ourselves at the Beachside apartments in Mooloolaba. They’re not quite beachside, but they’re definitely apartments, separate bedroom, lounge and bathroom. Good(ish) cooking facilities which I almost immediately put to use as I had been gagging for spaghetti ailio, olio e peperoncino, I had seen it on many menus while in Oz, but always with the unnecessary addition of bacon (always) and chicken (frequently). Just not traditional, and not in the title either. First time I’d cooked in weeks, and it was delicious. The apartment was really nice, balcony ... read more
