Meanwhile... back in Bowen, Brett was going a bit stir crazy on his crutches, trying to run the job from the couch, with his leg up. At least the skatepark is almost done and he is actually doing really well. He even snuck out in the truck a few times while I was away... The day I flew back in from Canada, our friend Tarra (a.k.a. TP), flew up from Melbourne for her 2 week school holiday. We haven't seen her as much as we did the first year we were here so will be good to catch up, plus then Brett will have 2 ladies to look after him. He is the envy of alot of people at the pub in Bowen, when we are both getting him a beer and driving him around! The ... read more

30th June 2009 After the shortest stay in a hostel of the trip so far (7 hours) we were off bright and early to the airport for our flight to Townsville. Straight after landing in Townsville we caught a bus to the ferry terminal and made our way to Magnetic Island. After the long but smooth journey (some old guy offered us a lift to our hostel on Magnetic Island) we arrived at X-base backpackers. This was a hostel we swore we'd never stay in as it is a chain of hostels renowned for partying 18 year olds but we got a good deal. The rest of the afternoon was spent on the beach with Elaine chilling out in the sun and Alex playing beach football with about 20 other lads. After having a cheap but ... read more

Well it just goes to show planning gets you no where!. That change of plan we had in mind of 'battling' south to our next stop, well it never happened. Although thats not to say we didn't try..... 5:30 Sunday morning, made a coffee and gave the boat one last check for anything not secured down properly. SW predicted to blow, around 15-20 knots, great. Started up motor, pulled up anchor and away we go. Winched up mainsail, and furled out heady.... Averging about 9 knots at one stage, then up to 13. Flying along. Wind slowly starts to blow SE and then the swell picks up and ......Clunk,clunk,clunk; shit, turn off the motor. That said, the boat starts to buck a little and we slow to a mere 2-3 knots. No frigging idea what it could ... read more

Waiting is definitly not for the impatient. Ok so here we are at Magnetic Island, been here now for 2 weeks; initially we decided it could end up being a long stay, you know waiting for those winds to come through and and push us comfortably South; ......well, change of plan; we found that there are so many times you can walk the same tracks and sit on the same patch of sand on the beach just watching the tides rolling in and out; of course in between all this there is that urge of thirst which in turn twists your elbow and entices you to spend your dollar at the local pub..... Yes, definitly time to battle our way through the prevailing SE winds and pray for the occasional E/NE wind to guide us, like ... read more

Day 87 - Magnetic Island Yippee, we’re off to Magnetic Island today and the ferries run from really early in the morning so guess what, we’re up at 6am again! We’re not sure what’s happening to the Queensland weather at the moment but this morning we have again experienced spots of rain. Obviously we had to send the evidence off for analysis as it’s just so hard to believe but the test results came back positive, definitely rain! We were hoping for blue, clear skies this morning but instead have overcast and cloudy - seemingly there’s been some sort of issue with our order, we hope they sort it soon! The ferry terminal is only a 20 minute drive from the campsite and we’re hoping to catch the 7.45am one so that we get a head ... read more

Spent a day sailing around the Whitsunday's on the boat 'Camira', was expecting it to be really tacky and touristy (we'd gone for the cheapest option avaliable) but was pleasantly suprised. Did some snorkeling but the visability was really poor and the reef wasn't that excited - made me exciting for all the dive trips I'm doing before I leave Aus though! Went to Whitehaven beach, was really stunning, perfectly white sand, clear blue water, like Lake Mackenzie. Can't really describe it any better than that, basically was the most perfect beach ever! Spent the rest of the day sailing around the Whitesunday's, they were nice, the weathers good but it's hard to be interested in sea, sand, islands and trees when I've seen an awful lot of them this year and they all look pretty ... read more

Well, a lot has happened since our last entry. Firstly, as you all may know by now, we got engaged! We’re both really happy and excited and can’t wait to celebrate with everyone in Canada, or else over here when some of you visit us (hint, hint). Other than being busy getting engaged, we’ve also been travelling great distances and encountering local wildlife. We’ll start from the beginning. We left Hervey Bay, opting to head straight to Airlie Beach, a 14 hour journey. We thought about stopping for a night along the way, but the onlyworthwhile place to rest - Rockhampton - doesn’t offer much other than beef (it’s the cattle capital of Australia) and a nice river to wander along. However, in the past couple of years, there have been numerous photographs taken of a ... read more

The city of Townsville sheilds the beauty that lies of its shore. The Island gained its name due to the strange effects on compasses in the age of Captain Cook. Magnetic Island, once a fortress to safeguard the East Coast against long range attacks from the Japanese during WWII, it is now the home to 2000 inhabitants and about as many back-packers. The place to be on the island is Base. This hostel rightly boasts its credentials as a great place. The place is great, but not that great to stay there. The hostel sits on the beach of Nelly Bay, 15 minutes from the nearest shops. Take a walk along the sand and you'll find a rare spot of tranquility and peace. Most welcome after the intensity of Cairns, it really is a great spot ... read more
