I woke early (as usual) and clamboured down from my top bunk ever so daintily (not!) and off for my early morning cuppa. At 8.30 I and about 25 others went for our champagne breakfast in a tropical park that is part of the resort where the hostel is. We had an enormouse breakfast and lots of animals were brought around for us to look at and stroke. I sat with an ozzie family who were staying here for easter weekend, and they we had a great time together. First up was a wombat who was very cute and cuddly, then it was a python, then a small crock (mouth taped closed) parrots and last but not least koala ..... aaaahhhh . The guide told us that they are solitary animals and when its mating season ... read more

Today I left Airlie and took a 5 hour bus ride to Townsville where I caught a ferry for 20 mins to Magnetic Island and a quick bus ride to my next hostel Bungalow Bay in Horseshoe bay. Its an award winning hostel thats in a national park and consists of A shaped little cabins, I'm in a 6 berth and top bunk, which is a pain to get in and out of - sepecially with an aching back !!! went for a 5 min walk to the beach that looks lovely, it has an area sectioned off for safe swimming ( ie stinger proof) bought the obligatory pinta for my tea and back for a swing in a hammock and book time. Stayed in our place for pizza with a girl from Birmingham (less the ... read more

Our 6 hour bus ride from Airlie Beach took us to Townsville, from there we took a 20 minute boat ride to the Magnetic Islands. When the islands were first discovered the explorers compass didn't work so that is why the islands were called Magnetic, now however longer trips showed the islands were in fact not magnetic but the name stayed. Now the locals say it is called Magnetic Island because people can't resist it. The island is covered in lush green forests and was truly breathtaking. I was so shocked when I stepped off the boat into a tropical paradise. Unfortunately though the beaches aren’t that nice, the sand is very rocky and dark and the water appears very dirty because the currents kick up a lot of sand, also jellyfish prohibit anyone from getting ... read more

I have had enough rain and humidity to last me a lifetime so I was excited to start traveling south. My first stop after leaving Cairns was Magnetic Island. I heard from many travelers that the island was really awesome and a must-do; I was warned though that it sucked in the rain. But then again anything sucks in the rain. (Sorry to complain about the rain so much but I think I've had 4 days in the past three weeks that it didn't rain and even when it's not raining it's very cloudy; So it's been a major part, and bummer, of my trip. But despite the rain I've still had a good time.) I had to spend about 6 hours on a bus from Cairns down to Townsville and then I had to catch ... read more

Well its a bit of a wet hello after the weather we have had. Since we last blogged we have been up to loads. We did a thing in 1770 called scooterroo....basicly a motorbike ride round the coast on bikes done up to look like harleys....lee even had one with the high handlebars and I rode my own bike for the first time. We were in a group of 50 which sounds like loads but was so much fun tearing up the town. The guy who ran it looked like a typical hells angel with the long great hair and beard to match. We were also there the day they were filming their advertising video which will go on youtube so keep a look out for it. The next day we had surf lessons which was ... read more

25/11/2009 - After a fantastic time in Cairns it was time to move on even though we could have easily spent longer there. We got our stuff ready and checked out of the hostel, we caught a taxi to the Greyhound coach terminal. We were a little early so in the meantime we sat in the café opposite and had some breakfast. Soon enough the coach arrived and we jumped on board. Including our lunch stop just off the motorway the trip took around 6 hours to get to Townsville. Once we arrived we bought return tickets to the ferry to Magnetic Island and boarded it straight away. It took another 20 minutes on a very rough and windy ride across. Next we jumped onto another bus which dropped us off right outside our YHA hostel. ... read more

From Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays we drove north stopping off at Ayr (!) for lunch where it was about 35c, so just a wee bit warmer than the original Ayr in Scotland! As Jen got out of the car she accidently stood on her watch that had fallen on the ground so that made 2 of us without a watch as Gordon lost his on the Lares Trek in Peru! (Och well, who needs to worry about the time anyway?!). Heading further North to Townsville we noticed a dramatic change in the scenery as we entered a lucious green tropical area. We drove up Castle Hill to catch a good view of Townsville, Magnetic Island (Maggie!) and the surrounding coast. Leaving the car in Townsville we got a passenger ferry over to Magnetic Island where ... read more

‘Hot and stuffy Townsville’ as it was noted in our guidebook lived up to its name, probably not helped by local bush fires. We wasted no time stuffing our rucksacks full and jumping on a ferry to Magnetic Island. We spent the first two nights in The Base hostel with a rowdy bar and a large village of huts and teepees. We spent time on the beach and in the bar as well as investigating the ice cream shops of Nelly bay! We then caught the bus to Horseshoe bay - notably the bus drivers have to wear a uniform on the island but it is a floral shirt and shorts (very Hawaii!). This second hostel was quieter and we spent our days reading on the beach and bushwalking between bays where we could snorkel amongst ... read more
