As I made my way up the Gold Coast, my next stop was at Surfer's Paradise. Surfer's Paradise is known for it's great hiking...no, I'm just kidding. It's exactly what it's name states. I wouldn't know though since I didn't surf there. It's a very touristy place, as it is basically hundreds of hotels and resorts on a beautiful beach with great shopping. It also has about 4 or 5 different theme parks around the area. I thought of you, Kristin, as I knew it would be the perfect vacation spot for you. As I left the Gold Coast, I entered Brisbane. I spent just a couple of days there as it is just a normal big city. I did enjoy cuddling the koalas at the Koala Sanctuary and took in the beautiful view of the ... read more

Arrived in Magnetic Island today, we had to get off the bus at Townsville and get the boat over. I was a bit nervy at first cos i was on my own for the 1st time in ages, but i met people straight away. There was me, Charlie, Nicky, Laura and Becky who were together all the time there. Charlie left after one day, but the others were there the whole time. We were staying at Base, and it was beautiful there, a really chilled out relaxing place. We drank the bar dry............ of Pinneapple juice!!!!! Laura and Becky hired a Moke while we were there, so we al went out for a drive in that. It was so funny, that moke looked like a barbie car, it really didn't look real. then the next day ... read more

Hello Hello Everyone, Well we had a lovely stop over night in Townsville, wish we had thought to stay more than 1 night it was a really nice place. We stayed in a backpacklers called Globetrotters and it was great so cheap and we got a free dinner and breakfast ah it was like being back in South America! Had a fairly quiet night but managed to get to watch the opening night of Australian Big Brother which was exciting as now I'll know who everyone is in the magazines over here! We got up early the next morning and got the 20 min ferry over to Magnetic Island. Arrived into Nelly bay and got the bus out to Base where we were staying. The hostel is great, RIGHT on the beach we only have to ... read more

We spent a few days between the beautiful Magentic Island and Mission Beach as just the five of us. We basically just relaxed during these days. Our hostel on Magentic Island was amazing. It was like something you'd expect to find in the Bahamas. Everyone stayed in little beach huts and you were literally right on the beach. It also had one of the very few bars on Magentic Island. Free Kayaking (or canaking as we dubbed it - a cross between canoeing and kayaking) was included in our stay so we spent a morning doing that. We went up to the shark nets to see if we could spot any (we couldn't) and toyed with kayaking around the cove to find an apparent nudist beach but decided to spare our eyes and tired limbs. Our ... read more

Tue 15th April Today I caught the 6:15 am bus to Townsville, which was so not the plan but as I left it to the last minute to book onto the bus it figures why had to get the stupid o clock one! Got the ferry straight over to Magnetic Island. First stop was Horeshoe Bay for a bit of a sunbathe but I caught paranoid a coconut was gonna fall on me head so had to spend a considerable amount of time judging where the position might be. Had to swim in the netted area of the sea as it's stinger season and the sea here wasn't clear, which was just no good for the nerves (yes that's my imagination going crazy again, but it doesn't help that they had big tubes running along the ... read more

On our last full day in Cairns we decided it was time to something more adventurous than just relaxing by the pool and having BBQ's everyday. We booked a diving boat and headed to the 'Great Barrier Reef' for a day of scuba diving. Me, Rick and Nick were in tip top condition for the dive however Ross had only had one hours sleep and was feeling worse for wear...this became evident on the boat journey to the reef. We were briefed on safety and where the dive spots would be and exchanged our ISS scuba diving qualifications. Today we would be diving on our own with no guide woooo. On our first dive we pretty much were thrown off the boat as the skipper had to keep to his diving schedule. This was slightly scary ... read more

Hey folks, We reached Magnetic Island after a 6 hour greyhound bus ride and 15 minutes on the ferry. We got a bus to a hostel called Base which was recommended to us by one of the Castaway's girls. We walked in to find out that there were no dorm beds left. The island is tiny and it was pitch black out and we didn't fancy traipsing round the island looking for a bed and then the girl on reception informed us that we could sleep in one of their permanent tents. We asked to have a look and laughed when we saw them - they looked quite cool and definitely very cosy! They are supposed to sleep 2 people inside but we moved a third bed in so it was even cosier!! After seeing lots ... read more

21st - 23rd April - Cairns to Magnetic Island and Townsville After spending some further time in Cairns we finally managed to get round to booking our Oz Experience to start our trip down the East coast towards Sydney. First stop was Magnetic Island, just off the coast from Townsville. When the bus arrived it was smaller than I had expected but we all crammed in and met our fellow Oz Experience travellers. On the trip down we stopped off at a large scale croc farm where the animals are farmed for their meat and skin. On arrival the guy brought a small croc on board and allowed us all to have a hold. Its a weird texture! When being passed around the baby seemed relatively calm until he was passed to me when he chose ... read more

We had a mad rush in Qantas changing our flights for Ayers Rock before getting the greyhound bus at lunchtime for our 6 hour journey to Townsville. We jumped straight onto the ferry over to Magnetic Island which was named by Captain Cook because he thought his ship's compass went funny when he sailed by in 1770. We made our way to X Base hostel which Nicola at Castaways had recommended. We arrived at 8pm and the only acommodation they had left were like tippees. They were small permanent tents with 2 camp beds in. We thought they were quite cute, managed to squeeze a third bed in and were looking forward to testing them out until i spotted what i thought was a cat in the bushes outside but it turned out to be a ... read more
