* October 29 - Oz Experience Bus to Townsville and over to Magnetic Island * October 29 - November 1 - X Base at Magnetic Island I arrived in the early evening on Magnetic Island and stayed at this backpacker resort called Xbase. Actually, it was quite a good deal by Australian standards. I decided not to do any diving here - although I heard that the Yongala wreck was absolutely amazing. I met a few friends - Jay from Sydney and Maria from Germany and we ended up renting a Moke to cruise around the island. I was worried at first because officially, I was the only one with a valid license - but I am so back at driving stick shift and not so comfortable with driving on the wrong side of the ... read more

I set off on the Oz Experience bus early this morning. Ou first overnight stop is Magnetic Island. On the way down today we stopped at a crocodile farm. There was one crocodile that was about 6 foot long and the crazy man that worked there sat on its back to give a talk. He has scars all the way down his legs from where crocs have attacked him! We watched the bigger crocs being fed and at the end we all took it in turns to hold a baby aligator. I held a snake too and stroked a kangaroo! Later we took a ferry to Magnetic Island. I'm only staying here for one night. It was getting dark when we got there and we're leaving early so aren't going get to see much of the ... read more

I'm a bit like an old woman these days.....after a day on the bus my ankles & feet are so swollen that I look like I've elephant feet.....so attractive. Next stop was Magnetic Island. Now I'm not going to run it into the ground but we didn't love it like other people have. It is a beautiful tropical island.....& maybe we've seen so much of it at this stage that we didn't appreciate it....but I think maybe the hostel had a lot to do with it also....wasn't the nicest of spots so we didn't feel at home.......& it was so quiet there too ......I guess we were looking for something with a bit more life. Magnetic Island is made up of loads of bays....easily accessible using the bus-service.....be warned that the wild bus-drivers take the corners ... read more

It's about 4:30pm in the afternoon on Sunday the 7th. I'm currently on the beautiful Magnetic Island off the coast of Townsville, south of Cairns. It's still hot outside, the weather has been amazing the last few days. Following my last entry, I enjoyed a bit more time up in Cape Tribulation in the rainforest. The weather turned sour there on my last morning there - saw rain for the first time in Australia. My tour stopped off at the famous Mossman Gorge tucked in the rainforest - it was nice. I spent an evening and the better part of a day in Port Douglas (located in between Cairns and Cape Trib). Port Douglas is supposed to be a lovely spot but the weather wasn't very nice, it rained the whole time, so I wasn't able ... read more

... read more

Hey u's!! Well, Magnetic Island was interesting...the island itself was tiny! And there wasn;t a lot to do there to be honest! But was good for us as the post Thai detox was easier to stick to... We did soooo much walking! Transport didn't really exist on the island so didn't have much choice really! Buses stopped running at 9pm and there was only 1 taxi on the whole island! Mad!! We did a bush walk to see some Koala's...and after walking up to the highest point on the island we had seen a grand total of 0 koala's! Ha!!! Guess they were all sleeping!!!! Was good being at the top though, there was an old fort there which you could climb into and then you could see for miles! Then after all the walking, we ... read more

Hey u's!! Well getting into the Ozzie life now! Still taking bit of adjusting but starting to really enjoy it!!! Booked ourselves on the Silver Swift boat trip to the Great Barrier Reef and was one of the best days of my life! Really was amazing! Set off at 8.30am and sailed to the Reef! It was breathe taking!!! Don't really know what I was expecting from it, but was just surreal! The sea was sooo clear you could see down to 30 metres at some points...and when the tide was low the coral was almost sticking out of the sea! We went to 3 sites in the Reef! We could not decide for ages whether to dive or not! It was so nice there that we really wanted to! Only the cost holding us back! ... read more

Well my intentions of having a quiet time in Cairns didn't quite go to plan. I had heard from pretty much everyone that having a quiet time is pretty much impossible there and they are all right. Cairns is flooded with backpackers, someone should also check Ireland as I suspect it may be empty, if so look no further, they're all here! I had a couple of days of dithering, getting burnt and bitten my the evil mossies before, after much deliberation I decided to take the plunge (literally) and sign up for a 5 day dive course. It's something I've talked about doing for a while, particularly in relation to the "If Mark can do it so can I" theme so off I went. I managed to select the most expensive but, I'm told, the ... read more
