After finally managing to leave Cairns (for the second time) we had pretty much a repeat performance of the drive up here with Mum driving most of the way while I was in recovery mode from the night before. The next destination was Magnetic Island, which involved catching a ferry from Townsville, which we only just made by seconds as we realized we couldn’t take the car across and had to rush to put some things together in our little packs. A short 25 mins boat ride and we found ourselves on an idyllic, laid back, little island, and after the poor weather in Cairns we were delighted to have clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine again. As I had been doing so much diving, Mum asked if we could do just one dive together, so ... read more

Torstai illan otimme rauhallisesti ja latasimme akkuja seuraavan paivan... read more

Greyhound Bus Our first greyhound bus adventure! Now we feel like real backpackers! We walked to the bus terminal in Cairns with our shoulders screaming by the time we dumped our bags. Clutching our booking forms we slipped into our allocated seats. Our driver seemed to take sadistic pleasure in sitting the singles together with a stranger, mean man. The time passed quite quickly, although we were grateful for books and the iPod to block out the horrendous kiddy movie playing at full blast. We arrived at Townsville just in time to hop onto the next ferry to Magnetic Island. It only took 20 minutes to cross over from the mainland but it was a rather bumpy ride. We jumped on a bus for the short ride to Magnums Backpacker resort. After checking in to the ... read more

Sunday morning, Derek and Amanda took us out to "Maggie", which is Magnetic Island, a suburb of Townsville. After about a 20 min ferry ride, we were there. Friends of Derek's live on the Island, so they met us at the ferry terminal and lent us their car for the day. Our first stop was the Koala Sanctuary. Vlad can now check "Hold a Crocodile" off of his list of things to do, and I can check off "Cuddle a Koala". We also got to pet lizards and snakes, and a cockatoo too! Then, we headed for lunch with Phil and Robin (Derek's friends), and then set out to tour the Island. We went to several different Bays, with nice beaches and gorgeous views. We hiked to a couple of lookout points, and then did the ... read more

Magnetic Island on isohko saari Townsvillen edustalla. Jokaisen lahden mutkassa on pieni "lahio".

This is getting hard to write as the 11th July feels so long ago and so much has happened since but here goes. I arrived in Townsville at 2pm thinking Penny would be just getting off the greyhound bus next to me but looking around there was no room for another bus. I asked the my Premier bus driver where the greyhound stopped and he replied 2km over near the ferry! I then spun round trying to remember the hostel name Penny had booked us into and God must of loved me that day as there in front of me on a wall was Globetrotter hostel just a little reminder of the name of our hostel. I walked over and checked- in, luckily Penny had realised too so she hadn't waited about too long at her ... read more

Loved this place me and Hannah went across to magnetic island for the full moon party, got quite drunk and partyed all night with simon, john, verron, ian and mark that we met on fraser island and the whitsundays. Hannah and I decided to go for walk to the beach one day except missed the trail and ended up rock climbing down the side of a cliff through really prickley grass and all sorts, was worth it though the beach was mint. We hired moped for a day too, was great fun tazzing around the island.... read more

Magnetic island is so named because of it's impact on Captain Cooks navigational equipment during his vovage up the east coast. The island lies 20 mins off the coast of Townsville. Rich and I headed straight there and ended up at base backpackers home to the monthly full moon party. The backpackers it's self was really nice, more of a resort on the beach than budjet accomodation. It was situated right on it's own little patch of beach lined with palm trees. There was a big bar / decking area which then gave way to the accomodation which kind of looked a little like the beachside huts in SE Asia, despite the fact there was ten to a room, not one. That first night was the full moon party. It was in no way as ... read more

Spent 2 days on Magnetic Island (Maggie Island to the locals). It is such a stunning place, big grey boulders, steep wooded hills, clear blue waters with reef right off the beach. I could have spent longer there had I had the time. It actually reminded me of Isla Del Sol in Bolivia (Laura will know what I'm talking about!). Unfortunately I felt pretty ill whilst there so was in bed by 9 every night! I managed to lug myself up a big hill, huffing and puffing and feeling rotten all the way, but all this was forgetten when I was rewarded, not just by spectacular views, but a real life koala in the wild! I could have stood watching him all day! I finished the trip off by sleeping on the beach, sleep has ... read more
