Mon 21st /Tues 22nd Jan The campsites here are very well provisioned. They all have washing machines, dryers and washing lines, good showers, BBQ areas and sinks and often have toasters, microwaves and toasters too. It can be sociable cooking in a communal kitchen and it's a hell of a lot easier than stifling in the van which has a tiny preparation area. Most of the sites cost between 15$ and 30$ though the one at Brisbane was 38$. At the Rockhampton site there was table tennis and Kev threatened to thrash me - he beat me twice at 21 - 19 and beat me more decisively in the third game, but I won the next two games. The sixth game ended inconclusively when the ball flew out of the window and onto the roof of ... read more

We had another great social function for the Mackay group of AFS Intercultural Programs. 15 out of the 17 exchange students in the Mackay district came along with their host families and support families for a great afternoon and evening together. It was held at the beautiful Habana property of Dave and Jahn with the kids in the pool, families having a few drinks and superb catering courtesy of the great Aussie pie and the Pie Van. Santa arrived with presents to cap off another successful year. Barry has stepped down from the chair which will be done in 2008 by Leanne and Shirl, publicity is now done by Lenice Crawford, camps will be done by Megan Herbert and sending by Penny Skerman. The new state treasurer is Linda Gallegos. ... read more

We’ve now been home two weeks and our feet have hardly touched the ground. We were laid low for the first few days to recover from the flu. Then we headed down to Michelle and Izzy’s at Boyne Island for a few days to catch up. They’ve settled back in well after touring the globe. They now have their house up for sale and if all goes well they should be in their new home at Tannum Sands by Christmas. Kristelle is busy planning her engagement party (16th Nov) and studying for her final CPA exam. I’ve decided to post a final blog with last photos etc to round things off mainly for my own record of the trip. We stayed in the same hotel again (before we toured Europe) for our last few nights in ... read more

A great trip up into the highlands today to Eungella National Park which is about 80 Km from Mackay. Broken River within the park is described as being the ‘platypus capital of the world”. As we were there in the middle of the day we did not have high hopes of seeing any but we saw several which was rather exciting. Lots of turtles, lizards and various birds as well when doing some bush walking. All together a rewarding day.... read more

Ok, ok, firstly very sorry for the lateness of this entry, but we have been super busy adventuring!!!! Where to start.... We left Port Maquarie after our last blog entry and initially headed for Coffs Harbour, but not ten mins into the trip we got a bit distracted by a sign for the "Billabong Koala Park" and we just had to pull in, as despite the numerous signs warning us about them on the side of the road we had yet to see one! They are awesome!!!! (check the pics) After an hour or so we were back on the road and got to Coffs Harbour in no time where we spent two wonderful days, and managed to find some more ridiculous tourist attractions, namely the 'Big Banana' (its massive!) We found a beautiful, but windy ... read more

Another show is almost upon Mackay Comedy Players. Eurobeat is a take off of Eurovision which is an annual European song contest televised world wide. In Eurovision the host nation invites countries from the world to perform and each country showcases their music and artist. Eurovision has produced people such as Abba, LuLu, Celine Dion etc but is more notable for wacky and of beat not to mention off tune contestants and performances. So Eurobeat stereo types all that is Eurovision and makes it trashier, and more off beat with the host presenters Voyka and Sergei which are a take off of Fast Forwards 2 Russian television presenters. The host nation is Sarejvo Bosnia so the set crew, sound and lighting people are all dressed in army fatigues Each nation presents their songs to the audience ... read more

I leave tonight. Still packing, but not much left to do now. I think once I board that plane I will in part feel a huge sense of relief - everything's packed, everything is as organised as its going to get (if not, too late), and as the AYAD bureacrats say: until we're on that plane, we're not actually guaranteed our placement due to the often volatile nature of the countries that we are going to work in. Had two going away things this week. One from my work at MADASSIA, and one last night with the cinema. But going to those things was kind of surreal...this whole week has been. I still don't really believe that as of tomorrow night I will be in Bangladesh, and whats more will be there for a year. Last ... read more

We have just held our orientation for our new students and families at Shoal Point Beach. It was another perfect day in Queensland. Last weekend was the post arrival camp at Rowallan Park, again perfect Spring weather, great fun, good kids. They are not too fussed about the snakes, frogs and spiders but good food, good company and fun seems to even it out a bit.... read more
