Currently, I sitting in Mackay (staying in a cozy motel, licking my wounds), waiting for the (current) cyclone (Wati) to go away. Day 33 - Scarness (Hervey Bay) Not much progress from previous day, but, my kayak was in storage, and I couldn't get things set up for a full days paddle. ... read more

We were staying with Bruce & Rebecca in Mackay, however, Bruce was off fishing in the Gulf (Australias gulf, not Iraq). Rebecca had started work ridiculously early at 5am but that meant she was home for the afternoon. We drove out to Eungella National Park picking up Rebecca's sister, Bridgett on route. It was a sunny day & we passed field upon field of sugar cane gently swaying in the breeze. We stopped off at Finch Hatton Gorge & walked down to the Araluen Falls. A big pool at the bottom had a few people splashing around in it so in we jumped. The rocks were slippery & the water was cold but refreshing in the tropical Queensland heat. On the walk back to the car a rustling in the bush revealed a spotted goanna, a ... read more

After our overnighter to Fraser Island we headed further North to Mackay and spent a day resting. (It's hard work all this travelling you know). We washed our clothes in possibly the worst washing machine I've encountered so far and hung them out to dry. We did encounter some wildlife in this hostel and Nick tried to practice his photography skills (which I have to say aren't brilliant, I don't really look like a witch all the time) on the local possum family. ... read more
