So I went to Ilbilbie to work on this farm for a week, when I arrived it was raining for the 5-6th straight day. (Which was really getting old since it has rained about 10 days out of the 15 days ive been in Australia.) When I got to Ilbilbie they had gotten 10 inches of rain in four days so there was a river where the road to their house used to be, and with it still raining it was looking like I wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon… When I first saw the river over the road I though “they are not really going to cross this, are they?” and my second thought when I realized they were was “these people are crazy- I just might like them!” the water was moving really fast and ... read more

MMMmmmmmm - fresh pineapple! Nothing like a warm, astringent mouthful to let you know you’re in the tropics. In the Mackay markets we buy fresh local pineapple, ginger and ocean barramundi to taste the tropical coast again. After five weeks going up through central NSW and into Queensland, with warm days but very chilly nights and mornings, it’s glorious to sit outside without jackets and beanies - although we still have to be covered up to counter aggressive mozzies. We’re constantly surprised by how crap the weather can be in Oz - I’ve vowed never to complain about New Zealand weather again. In Bathurst to spend a week with Torin and Andrea, we had rain and cold that would put Hamilton to shame. (They saved the scaredy old parents from having to drag the van over ... read more

Day 89 - Murray Falls The sun is up, the birds are singing, the sky is blue - beautiful! Quite a few people came in last night but it hasn’t crowded the place at all! We have a nice breakfast and then wander up the boardwalk leading to the base of the falls. They are gorgeous and with the sun beaming brightly from above the water looks so inviting. Sadly in the past it seems that walking on the rocks nearest to the base of the falls has been too inviting and the metal cross indicates a tragedy has taken place here which we later discover to be the death of a 19 year old Dutch tourist in 2003. We wander back through the camp ground and find the entrance to the walk taking you to ... read more

Day 81 - Finch Hatton Gorge to Mackay Our wake up tune is 'The road is long, with many a winding turn' and today we hauled our tired little backsides out of bed at 6.30am, the tune began at 6 but it was just too cold to stir from the warmth of the doona! It had sounded like people were talking late into the night but as we crept from the caravan we realised that it was the creek chatting away! What a wondering sound it was. Off to the bush shower we trot to see if the water was warm enough and it was! We opened the wooden door and stepped inside, no frogs or creepy crawlies around, just the rainforest right next to us! The water was beautifully hot despite the outside temperature being ... read more

Day 79 - Carmila Beach to Mackay Another weird night of restless sleep, it’s really odd because we were sleeping so soundly to begin with. It might be to do with the fact that we’re going to bed at 8pm if we’re in free camping and there’s nobody else around to have a chat too and the chatting we have done has been mainly about crocodiles! Yep, that would probably account for it! We missed sunrise this morning but we were up by 7am and decided to walk to the Osprey nest and check for activity. As we approached we could see one bird in the nest and it wasn’t long before it hopped out onto the tree for a bit of preening, and a bit more preening and a bit more preening, and a bit ... read more

Also staring Jean Smith as Mummy Jean & Mike Reed as Mike Wallop Reed! You know when you've been Rednecked We headed straight into a garage at Batchelor to check Pris's leaky radiator, at her age she can't help dribbling, bless her, anyway, we were welcomed into the garage with open arms and a broad smile. “bring her in and pop the lid” said the happy go lucky Father Christmas looking chap, Ho Ho HO! So we did just that. “I normally charge 500 bucks just to look under the hood, Ho Ho Ho”. We were then greeted by a couple of Santa's little helpers, wishing us all the joy's of summer and dancing around the workshop, “we will fix her, we will fix her” they sang! “I @&*^ hate these cars you know, people die ... read more

(sorry, don't really mean to compare the Shoalwater Bay area to Mordor (LOTR), but, if you saw it and experienced it in the weather I was in, well...) Days 39=46 (47 - now, in Mackay, will probably leave on Monday - day 51) Sea Hill Pt (34 miles), Freshwater Bay (70 miles, + 1 rest/weather day), Mumford I. (50 miles), Stanage Bay (19 miles), Carmila Beach (45 miles), Sarina Beach (44 miles), Mackay (22 miles) Day 39 - After following all of the 'updates' for Cyclone Hamish, the final one said there would be no further updates because the cyclone had diminished to a tropical depression (in Hervey Bay area), being late - I got all my gear ready for leaving early the next morning. Leaving Gladstone, I played 'tag' with a freighter being escorted ... read more

Day 214: Thursday 29th January - A relaxing day in Mackay So much for a lie in this morning. The dorm I’m staying in is full of people getting up early to go to work. Mackay like Gladstone isn’t really on the backpacker circuit and most people staying here are working. Anyway, I need to be up to see what the options are to get to the Eungella national park, home to the duckbilled platypus. I found out last night that there was no tour going from the hostel so I went to sleep thinking that hiring a car today was the best option. Wanda, who runs the hostel finds out that it will be $73 to hire a car for the day so similar in price to what the tour would cost. The only drawbacks ... read more

start of a new year. 2009. i shall be 30 this year. so, yes, i woke up on new year's day in plenty of time to catch a cab to the sydney airport. when i got up a few of the boys were still awake from nye. impressive right? matty b, smealy, kade, and justin bid me farewell as i burst out the door. i successfully left my camera case, memory cards, tiny tripod, extra batteries, sun hat, vans, sundress, and snacks at kade's parents. well done jenny. i also misjudged my time since i was so worried about not catching my early flight and arrived at the airport an entire hour before i needed to be there. the cab took about 50 minutes and cost $90. ouch. once i get there, check in, and plop ... read more

So where were we? Ah yes, we've left Cairns and are now on our drive down to Brisbane. We stopped for an afternoon and a night in Townsville, a pretty unremarkable town ( think Gloucester, without the Cathedral, without the history, with the shopping centre but a bit more down-at-heel). However, a 20 minute ferry ride away is Magnetic Island, at this time of year a beautiful, sleepy little beach filled place. It was much more fun than staying in town. I think we should start a poll - who would like to travel with jb? doesn't he just love everything? and disagree with just about everything? cute eh? Well you know Townsville wasn't the cutest place -but it sure as hell wasn't cold.......Mackay isn't cold either but it has shopping malls - mmmm who really ... read more
