The Great Barrier reef had some nice sites, especially fish-wise! We saw many sharks, a 3 m long stingray, a napoleon fish, lobsters, lion fish and turtles and we went into several caves. We also saw this GIANt clam of 1 meter, must be a... read more

This is the life Australasia » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » open water By UVApril 28th 2007 Quite a large boat, four decks if that's any indication, so it doesn't rock too much. Large dining room and lounge, complete with a TV, sofas and bar. A chef on board, cooking all kinds of meals, and a team of hosts cleaning up after you. Nice cabins with comfortable bunks and en-suite bathrooms and even a hot tab on deck. And all you have to do is dive. Up to 4 dives a day, just get your gear ready, team up and jump down to check out what... read more

Hey there, no worries, this won't be a long one. But the time has come for me to leave Cairns and I fly down to adelaide this afternoon, about 3500 miles, so not too far, have to laugh though, a guy who's been staying in my hostel is catching the train back down to sydney today, 45 hours, he says it's alright, does 30hours to brisbane, have an hour there and then another 15 to sydney, sucker. So what have I been doing, er, not a whole lot, have been trying to save my pounds and be a good boy, not alot has been going on in cairns in general, although we had easter weekend, which was a bit of a pain, the pubs wouldn't let u in unless u bought a meal, even at ... read more

But of course there was only really one reason i wanted to visit the sleepy city of Cairns - to dive in the Great Barrier Reef - naturally!! So today was the day - on dad's birthday!! Had to get picked up at 7am and sit on a coach with a load of ancients and their gay tour guide - was rather amusing!! Then hit the port and was told that it was particularly rough water out on the reef today and did i want to change dates, but i didn't and soldiered on! Got on the boat and took the advice of the crew and bought some sea sickness tablets - its a shame not everybody listened to them, as halfway out to the reef half the boat was at the back being sick!! Rather ... read more

As Gene and I navigated the streets of Cairns, we were quick to realize the city’s dependency on tourism, with The Great Barrier Reef the focal point of its industry. Our hotel was situated near the marina, adjacent to a plethora of shops and restaurants and numerous tour booking centers promoting various day trips and activities. If Gene and I were resolute on accomplishing anything during our stay in Cairns, we were determined to take a stab at diving at what many would consider the most spectacular reef in the world. However, with Gene’s fear of drowning and my own fear of deep-sea exploration and saltwater predators, we worried we were setting ourselves up for failure. Careful not to put too much money where our mouth is, we signed up for an introductory dive, buy-one-get-one-free, which ... read more

Today was the day, one of my lifelong dreams, ever since i first heard about the Great Barrier Reef, saw my first National Geographic Documentary on it, came true, and I went diving on the Great Barrier Reef! It was fantastic! . If i did not have that big mask on, and the regulator in my mouth to give me some O2 under water, you would be able to tell that i am grinning from ear to ear. I went out on the reef with a company called Down Under Dive, and so after almost 2 hours on the water in this very fast boat, we arrived at our first diving site, the Saxon Reef. I was in the third diving group, so i had a bit of time before it was my turn to go ... read more

G'day mates! (avec l'accent australien bien sur!) Nous voici bien au chaud en Australie avec une nouvelle mission en tete. Apres avoir cherche (et trouver Gollum en NZ), nous etions maintenant a la recherche de Nemo... Direction Cairns, dans le Queensland australien (the sunshine state they call it!).

Wow, that's all I can say!! I went on a whole day boat tour to the Barrier reef yesterday and it was absoultely stunning! It was an early 7.30am start and I was pretty tired from the nigth before. I had promised myself not to drink too much, but hmm, does that ever happen! Does one drink actually exist!? I managed to get up and it was to become worth it! We went to two different locations where we could go snorkeling or diving and my god it was beautiful! The weather was gorgeous with clear blue skies and a lof of sunshine so it made the visibility perfect! The coral, the fish and even the huge shark that I saw was incredible! It felf like I was part of this other world under water as ... read more

Pro Dive Cairns The next two days were spent doing the in-class portion of my scuba diving class. We began with watching movies, discussing, and doing some quizzes. Then we went in the pool and tried things out first hand. Scuba diving is a lot more intense than you’d think. A lot of companies will take beginners out for the day without any training. However, there is a lot of stuff that could go wrong, and a course really prepares you for EVERYTHING. The Reef I woke up bright and early on the 5th to be picked up for the boat out to the reef. As advised, I popped 2 seasickness tablets. There was a delicious breakfast served when we arrived, and I was excited (albeit a little tired) to begin my 3-day reef adventure! Unfortunately, ... read more
