Today we woke up to the first day of rain!! I was at frist dissapointed, but wet is wet...and you can't stay dry when you are snorkeling! The ride out to the reef is usually a bit rough (a lot of the boats are nicknamed 'vomit commets' if that tells you anything) and the bad weather only makes the trip worse. A lot of us sat on the third level outside, only to be completely drenched from the waves in the first ten minutes. You would have thought the students were on a water ride, they were screaming and laughing and switching sides to try to stay dry (futile). After a two hour ride, we were all ready to get off the boat! (As a comparison, I sat on the first level on the way back ... read more

By now, I’m starting to think that I got my money’s worth in terms of diving. I really want to go again, but the energy to jump into my freezing cold, wet wetsuit and breathe dry compressed air for an hour has dwindled slightly. That, and the fact that my ears are expanding in order to compensate for diving to depth so much, has allowed me the opportunity to take it easy today. I did one REALLY nice dive with the guys and then hung around the boat for the rest of the day. On the dive, called Fantasia, we cruised around and found some really cool terrain. There was a decent size cave that we all gave a go, one at a time, and we swam through a group of probably 40 yellow-tailed barracuda…they were ... read more

July 6, 2006 6:30 wake up call. “Wake up call, Minke whales.” What an unorthodox way to wake someone up. Entice them into believing that there are minke whales, one of the rarest, least known whales in the world, spotted right off of our boat. I walked directly passed the morning snack, the meal before breakfast, and outside to the back of the boat. Immediately, I spotted a whale fin less than 10 feet of the boat. I guess they really are out there. And the great thing about these whales is that they are very curious, there’s no need to chase them down, they come to you, and they stick around for a while, building confidence as they see that we are not whalehunters. The divemaster let me know that whenever I was ready I ... read more

July 5, 2006 6:30 am wake up call. WHAT!?!?! Oh wait, lemme back up. 3am informal wake up call. The boat was cruising to the first location, about 10 miles off of lizard island, which is about 100 miles from the nearest thing I could name. The form of the informal wake up was actually my luggage case falling from the cabinet, because the waves had forced most of the room upside down. I covered my head, thinking maybe something might fall on top of me. But nothing did. The boat rocked very hard. I went from weightless to flopping onto my bed, back to weightless again, in the same general rhythm one might expect from a snoring symphony. But this was a little different. Eventually, I got to sleep- and although to this point at ... read more

Happy 4th o Jew-Lie My USA shebang went off with quite a day. Started out as casual as the day before, waking up to a nice view of the city and the ocean, then a nice walk through the park and around town. I arrived at the dive shop early just to stop in and say hi to the people who had been taking care of my trip. “Hey there, so you know what room you’re in right?” they said to me- I was thinking they knew because I was the special guy they had to cancel out of their last trip. “Yep, top deck starboard,” I exclaimed with a smile. “You don’t mind sharing it?” “What?!!? That wasn’t the deal.” That’s right. Twice, explorer ventures effed up my reservation. Whatever, I was here to enjoy ... read more

wohooo! we made it to Cairns...but only just! After much deliberating we decided to fly from Darwin to Cairns as we could not organise a car share and I just wanted to get over here to see Katie (and Clare and Roisin!) We headed for the interntet cafe to book a ticket and had a look at some notices in the internet cafe. There was one guy driving over so we texted him on the off chance he might be able to give us a lift. I pretty much forgot about it as I have texted quite a few poeple and only one got back to me saying he had already left. So we went to the internet and booked flights. At the very second I paid we got a text saying we could have a ... read more

Found this from a bit ago and decided to post it! It's from my second dive trip to the Great Barrier Reef! I think we all remember my last trip that I took…you know, the one where everything possible (and probable!) went wrong! Well, tacked on at the end of that trip was a dive trip on the Great Barrier Reef. Now, I couldn’t have that kind of visibility and weather be my only memories of the most magnificent reef on Earth! As if and pshaw! When mega cheap tickets back up to Cairns became available I ran the idea of going back up through my dad and he graciously gave it to me as a 21st birthday present. !!! Full of fresh hopes and dreams, my roommate Kim and I made our way back up ... read more

Our last trip in Australia was to the Great Barrier Reef! We visited the Saxon and Hasting Reefs on the outer edge. Unfortunately, the coral gets its spectular colour (reds, oranges, blues) from the sun, and for the last 3 weeks it's been really cloudy here. This is the best time of year to visit the reef normally - Cairns's winter is their dry and therefore peak season, but it's been really gloomy, (they think due to Cyclone Larry a few months ago affecting the weather). And so our visit to the reef wasn't as colouful as we had hoped, but still fun. Saxon reef was our first stop, and was pretty dull. It was also really windy and all the waves kept splashing over us and into our snorkles. I was also stung by some ... read more
