Cairns - 14/02/07-20/02/07 Just before we get into our trip to Cairns, there’s something I need to mention about Oz that’s been bugging me since we got here and I keep forgetting. Australia doesn’t have 1 or 2 cent coins in circulation. Nothing particularly strange or annoying with that I hear you say, but it is when they keep pricing everything as $4.27 or $16.99. You get to the checkout and you either have to round up or down. How daft is that ?? Anyway, as mentioned in an earlier instalment, part of my 30th birthday present was to go diving for three days on the Great Barrier Reef and do our Advanced Open Water Scuba certificate. We’ve been looking forward to this part of our trip basically since Lee booked it and we did all ... read more

Had to be at the pier for 7:30am left the hostel and walked down arrived at about 7:15am boarded the passions of paradise boat which was a catamaran. There were 64 of us on board and we went to Michaelmas clay island first where we could snorkel or take an introductory dive, I stuck to the snorkelling that was good but the colour of the coral was not that bright plenty of fish. We then had lunch aboard the boat then sailed to paradise reef this was the best reef. You jumped off the boat and you were on top of the coral straight away which was colourful and you could clearly see it moving/breathing. There were reef sharks and stingrays swimming about. We snorkelled for about an hour then returned to the boat and sailed ... read more

The roadoften travelled continued up the coast to my final destination of Cairns. Along the way I stopped at a place called Magnetic Island where I met up with 2 Canadians and 2 guys from Denmark that were my roomates back in the Whitsundays. We rented a 4X4 and drove around the island in a couple of hours...not that exciting really. I then decided that since I'd been to Nz and Oz and hadnt done anything extremely riveting, I'd try my hand at White Water Rafting on the Tully River. It has always been something that I've wanted to try and the Tully River is known to be the best place to do it in Australasia with grade 4 rapids (rapids range on a scale from 1-5). I chose the basic option deal as it was ... read more

Greetings! I hope you all are doing well! I am unsure if you received an email (or received multiple emails) regarding my last update—“Penguin Parade”; TravelBlog was experiencing difficulties sending the update to subscribers—sorry. This past weekend I traveled to Cairns, Queensland (Northeast Australia). The trip was unbelievable—arguably the best weekend of my life. The trip was very smooth……well except for the flights……I left Melbourne Wednesday morning at 7am on Jetstar (roughly Australia’s equivalent to Southwest Airlines). Once I was boarded, I immediately fell asleep; however, at 8:30am I was awoken by a flight attendant asking over the intercom if “there were any doctors on the plane.” An elderly woman near the back of the plane was apparently having a heart attack. The pilot diverted the flight to Mickelea (about an hour south of Cairns) so ... read more

We arrived safely and timely in Cairns, Queensland, Australia via Singapore. Boy it's humid! Even the locals are finding it too hot. Our daily budget is AUS $200 (GBP 80), which we achieved on day 1 - despite the most enormous breakfasts you've ever seen at the Lilypad. Our accommodation (Dreamtime Travellers Rest) is basic (no ensuite!), but for AUS $60 a night (approx. GBP 25 - just realised no pound sign on this keyboard!!) is just what we hoped for. Also, the double room did have a fan and coin operated aircon. The tour desk was very friendly here, offering plenty of suggestions and even giving us a lift into town during torrential rain. They booked our Greyhound tickets, nothing was too much trouble. We ate out in the evening for a little over GBP ... read more

Hi my friends, I just came back yesterday from a 3 day boat trip with a diving school. Almost everyone is doing a diving course in Cairns... so I thought why not try it. The course started on Monday with theory lessons and Pool training. And of course some quick multiple choise tests. I can advice everyone who wants to learn something new and who is physically and psycologically capable of diving, to do it. The PADI degree is quite easy to achieve without beeing a brainiac. The course is well built up. After two days on the boat, they offered us to do on top of the regular PADI open Water license, the Adventure course. Despite to the first step which allows you only to dive up to 18m deep, with the Adventure course you're ... read more

Aye captain...I will! and dive we did. So the morning of the 10th, I drove up to Townsville. I took the ferry out to Magnetic Island and went for a hike in the rain...I had packed for the night so my day bag was a little heavy with my camera and all, so I got very wet/sweaty while walking. I hiked up to an old WW2 look-out built on the Island which has the remains still there for the ammo huts and the two large, very accurate cannons that protected a 20 mile radius around Magnetic Island...although they never fired a shot at anyone, they did fire a warning shot near a U.S. ship that failed to announce it's presence in the area. I got some very cute photos of the 4 koalas I passed on ... read more

Well Folks I have have departed from paradise on the reef. Again amazing weather, it doesn't get bad on the reef. Spent a couple nights sleeping under the stars on the roof. Me and Marianne (Holland) spnet last night out there. It was freaking great. Man what a great experience. Got to chill out all day with som ereally cool people and was constantly making new friends with all the guests. Reef Encounter's hostie program is mandatory if ur ever in Cairns. Great fun. The Chefs Robbie and Steve are a blast. And Nadine and Marie always take care of drinks behind the bar. What a blast. So on my most recent dives I saw some bigger white tip reef sharks, tons of baricuda, and everything else u can imagine. The highlight of these dives were ... read more

A quick hello from the land of pies and dunnies. No photos I'm afraid, but they will come. I hate to admit it but Australia is a fantastic place. The Australians are much nicer in their own habitat rather behind the bar in a London pub. So far we have been to Ayers rock in the red centre, and by George, it is red (redder than my hair). We did a helicopter flight at sunset and a camel ride. Also drove to Kings Canyon about 300k north of the rock which was rather spectacular. Didn't see any Kangeroos though. Then we came to Queensland to seek out the teeming life of the rainforest. However, it doesn't quite teem. We only saw a couple of small crocs and the odd tree snake. Didn't spot a Cassowary bird, ... read more

My last days in Oz I explored an area that I have dreamt of since I was a child, The Great Barrier Reef. It exceeded my expectations in more ways than one. I decided the best way to experience its magnificent beauty & wildlife would be to get my scuba diving certification. So I did. After two days of classroom/pool time we departed on a massive boat with about 35 people for the next three days. Although my sailor legs didn't quite kick in I was still overwhelmed with joy and my body with shivers at the first glimpse of the reef. The first four dives were with the five other divers in my group and my instructor (Tristan-a nice lad from NZ). At the bottom of the ocean, we practiced breathing without our regulator in ... read more
