Wow. After 18 months of living over here, I've finally made it up to the Reef....the Great Barrier Reef that is. A weekend out of the City was well overdue and after not much thought and a little inspiration, Cairns was the destination. Cairns is a 3 hour direct flight from Sydney, and handily has a 7:30pm flight which means that although you arrive late, you don't have to get up very early the next morning, or spend half a morning on a plane. So, I booked the Friday off work and headed up on the Thursday night, arriving at 10:30pm. I'd booked myself into a hotel in the City and crashed for the night, waking with the sun filtering through my curtains the following morning. Having got a cab to the hotel in the dark, ... read more

Well hostessing on SOF actually turned out to be quite a lot harder than i imagined the hours were very long in the week on the boat and the pay was by day so making your hourly pay next to nothing and your over all pay not that much more. Main thing is i learnt a lot and had a good expericne as well though. I was so happy and pleased when i got the job but didn't know exactly what it would entail and at the time was happy to have been offered any job really and seeing as it was my first and only offer and it was something i thought i really wanted to do i was happy to have got it. Started work on SOF Monday 24th March for one week of ... read more

Coral Reef Snorkeling & Diving Up and at'em early, a bus comes to pick us up at 7:50. We miss a few pickups and people are late getting the bus so we arrive at the wharf just a little late. We book in and are numbers 61 + 62 on Passions of Paradise tour to the Great Barrier Reef. I am stoked as we get on a catamaran that's packed. We find seats to sign our lives away and set up our charge accounts for food and the like. As we're filling out our paperwork, an enthusiastic Rihana greets us and asks are we for scuba? Turns out they have an introductory dive to let you try out the diving gear. They take you through 2 tasks (clearing water from your mask and clearing water from ... read more

The Great Barrier Reef is a pretty massive creation and it's easy to see why it's considered a top Wonder of the Word. We spent 5 days exploring different areas- and feel that we only caught a glimpse of what's out there. The first day we spent on the Ribbon Reefs, a series of reefs on the outer fringes. These are too far out for most day boats and therefore mostly undamaged from heavy tourist traffic. The next dive sites were located 120 nautical miles off the coast - Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea. The boat traveled over night, so we didn't actually notice the trip except for the endless tossing and turning. The visibility was quite good- you could usually make out coral formations and see the fish swimming below the moment you entered ... read more

I'm now a certified open water diver. They trust me to swim down to 18m without an intructor. I pity my dive buddy, I'm still terrified of anything that moves. That inclues big fish. There was an enornous fish swimming under the boat, stopped to take a few photo's then changed mind when it swam towards me. I could have eaten my arm in one go. Very impressive though. Had faboulous time diving. After first dive when my mask flodded, continously, and I had a mild panic attack 3m down when it wouldn't clear, I was fine. Stopped to breathe and relax and let the ocean wash over me. The immense feeling of freedom of floating above the reef, thousands of fish appearing from nowhere to say hello. Have met Nemo, Dory and a turtle. Plus ... read more

Scuba Diving the Great Barrier reef Alysha's first dive.... My First dive was amazing. Melissa had just chickened out so it was just the guide, myself and some other chick. As we went down I held onto one of his arms, adjusting the pressure in my ears as necessary. The water was so calm, all I could hear was my breathing. The sight was astonishing, I have never seen anything like it. It's an entire new world down there, so much life, and its so beautiful, calm. I thought I was dreaming, my mind was blank and I felt so free. Scuba diving was something I thought I'd never have the bottle to do, so I'm glad Sharlene threw me in the deep end! Thanks! xx Aly... read more

After the road trip of yesterday we had taken a chance and booked a trip to the Great Barrier Reef for today. We had been reliably informed by the tour operator that this was going to be the day to do it as the weather forcast was no rain and the wind speed was only going to be 5 knots. We had to be at the boat by half 8 and although it wasn't raining the sky was black and overcast. We adopted a positive attitude though as often on the reef the weather is clear. So we boarded the boat which was great and took a couple of seats. While we were signing the disclaimer that stated if we were eaten by a shark or the boat sunk we would not sue an announcement came ... read more

We were told by so many aussies that a snorkel in Great Barrier Reef is the best thing to do in Cairns, we had to give in. So, we took off on the cheapest day trip we could find in search of a sea turtle and a reef shark. Who would have known? We found both. The day was as good as any you could have asked for and the water was warm as a bath. Chris and I jumped in with the highest of hopes and we were not disappointed. At the end of the day we had to admit it; this was the best snorkeling we've ever done in our lives. Coral that flows more colours than you can even imagine, fish that have no fear of swimming straight up to you, and the ... read more
