9/6 was our day on the Great Barrier Reef. We took a 90 minute boat ride out to an anchored platform on the Reef. All three of us signed up for an intro dive, and none of us made it beyond the diving platform. We were all a bit uncomfortable with the diving idea, and one by one we dropped like flies. The intro dive option did not cost anything but at least we gave it a try. We otherwise had a great time snorkeling, riding the semi-submersible boat, and relaxing on the Reef. Dean took an additional snorkel excursion with a marine biologist on an outer shelf of the Reef. We saw some great fish and coral. As we have headed north, we noticed the plant life becoming more tropical along the way. Bananas, coffee, ... read more

OK, I made it. Finally after dreaming of a trip to dive the GBR (Great Barrier Reef) for years, I have landed in Sydney. After 20 hours of travel with one more flight to Cairns, the GBR is right around the corner. I think my curent via from the Qantas lounge is downtown Sydney. Sorry, no picture as the fog has not burned off however I will have Mimosa for you. I hope to keep up with this blog, but who knows. I will be on a live aboard for the next 5 days, so no postings until Sept. 6th. ... read more

... and every penny that I spent was worth it! I just walked into the hotel room from the Reef Experience (and Reef Encounter) Great Barrier Reef cruise... truly a once in a lifetime experience... I'll have to get my thoughts together better in order to attempt to describe what it was like, but for now, I'll upload some pictures. I did buy an underwater camera as well as using Rebekah's disposable underwater camera because she bought a waterproof digital while she was in Sydney. YES! All the pictures uploaded... and I have more of the reef and fish and some turtles as well... they're on my disposable camera somewhere... so if I can get them developed at the beach, I can show everyone!!! Yay!... read more

One of the really big days of our trip has arrived - snorkelling and diving at the Great Barrier Reef! We've both been looking forward to this, but after my experience at the whale watching, I'm a little nervous... I do have a strong tendency to get sea sickness. At least this time, I am adequately prepared with some seasickness tablets. In the end... no worries! Despite relatively strong winds (20-25 knots), it is a beautiful sunny day, and the 2.5 hour trip out proves no problem. We first go to a Cay (a small sandy island). On the way, Eddie (who will be scuba diving) gets a briefing from the guide. It turns out that she is the only passenger who has her diving certification, so she will be going off with just the guide ... read more

Flew Bali - Singapore and spent nearly 24 hours stopover ( we watched 3 films in the private lounge and slept on the spa treatment rooms - but v boring to the extent that Carol was induced to buy a bottle of mango flavoured vodka!!) - then flew Singapore Brisbane (heavy rain) then connecting flight to Cairns - a weird way to go and taking 2 days but arrived safe and well in Australia at last. We then went straight to a campervan hire place and drove off up the coast to Far North Queensland within an hour of landing. All of our preconceptions have been blown away - Aussies polite and have a great and justifiable pride in their country and a desire to keep it clean and organised. Everyone is really helpful. The only ... read more

Since I was in Cairns by myself on my birthday, Dad thought it would be a nice present to go scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, I agreed! So off I went for three Intro Dives aboard Tusa 5. I thought I would be the only young girl solo traveler, but I met another as soon as I found the pier. I had already met a lot of people, but most of them were from England. Arieane was from Canada and her sister actually went to UW-Madison for Grad. School. She was the first person I met from North America during my 2 weeks of travel. Another gal we met on the boat, Mellisa, was from Scotland. For all three of us it was our first diving experience. The boat ride out to the reef ... read more

To find words to describe my diving experience over the past two days may be difficult. Exceptional, outstanding, awesome just seem inadequate. Everyone must go diving or snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, it should be compulsory! Far and away the best thing I have ever ever done. Please forgive the typos, the screen is swaying around a bit, feels like I'm still at sea. After a smooth hotel pickup at 07:45, I climbed aboard the ferry-like vessel at Cairns marina, pier B. Quite a luxurious affair, much nicer than the ferries used in Auckland harbour. I was surprised at how far away the reef was from Cairns - the journey on the boat took about 1 1/2 hours to reach the dive site. On board there were a mixture of day trippers who were either ... read more

Alright. Apologies first. No Pictures. Sorry, still my camera cord is at home. :( Also. Internet still v. expensive, so I will go through the last week and a half pretty quickly but yeah, ask me more when I get home, I'd love to tell you the stories. First off we flew from Sydney to Uluru (AKA Ayers Rock) and met up with the TWO Australian MEN who were going to be our guides for a WEEK. Let's just say, hawt. So the first day we went on a hike around the olgas which are nearby Uluru and are another rock formation. Then we headed to Uluru for the amazing sunset which we pretty much missed because it was overcast. Shucky darns. Luckily, these guys pulled out two things of wine, multiple bottles of champange, and ... read more

It's hard to find the words to describe the Great Barrier Reef. To say it is a natural wonder of the world just doesn't seem enough. So you will have to bear in mind that as I am writing this every adjective I use to describe it feels like an understatement. It is the largest living thing on earth, can be see from outer space, and home to: more than 1,500 species of fish, as well as dolphins, stingray, jelly fish, sea snakes, molluscs and more. Many of them are endangered. Also several species of sea turtles come to the reef to breed. The conflicting thing about going to see it, even though nothing would have stopped me, was that I was absolutely terrified. My biggest fear is open water, specifically being abandoned in it. It's ... read more
