I went out to The Great Barrier Reef today. I attempted to scuba dive but didn't like it and chickened out at about one metre! The water was so clear, I saw lots from the boat and I did a bit of snorkelling. Debby, from my dorm, also went diving today but on another boat. Debby met two American boys on her boat, Brian and Prashant, and we all went out for sushi tonight and then to The Woolshed. Brian and another boy volunteered for a strip game and lost badly...! ... read more

The next leg of our trip was one that we’d particularly been looking forward to - diving at The Great Barrier Reef. The reef is located off Queensland’s tropical northern coast and is one of the natural wonders of the world; it is 2300km long and one of the best places to access it from is Cairns. This meant a 4am start from our hotel to get the 06.10 flight east out of Darwin, but it’s only 2 hours in the air so you still have a full day ahead of you on arrival. This area is unique as it is the only place where two world heritage sites (the Reef and the tropical rain forest) meet. We’d decided to base ourselves about an hour north of Cairns as we’d heard it wasn’t a great place ... read more

This was fast and fierce all day. 1st part of the day the rapids were strong having to lean left and right to fit the raft through the smallest gaps, we were the only ones that did not get stuck on a rock, shaun said we had great bouncing rythem. I was up front all the way so I got the wetest along with my partner Clare. While ... read more

Since i was in the Great barrier reef area i thought what better way to see it than by diving. I enrolled in an SSI (Scuba schools international) open water course in Cairns lasting a total of 4 days and qualifying me as a certified diver down to 18 metres. The course consisted of 2 days in the classroom and pool (watching videos, going through theory and practicing skills), and 2 days out on the reef. I was 1 of only 4 in our group, and the instructors were a good laugh so we all got to know each other quite well. We had to have a short medical, and a swim test, after which we started to get used to the equipment in the pool, practicing regulator loss and taking off the mask underwater. After ... read more

Aamulla oli taas aikainen heratys joten onneksi edellisen illan karaoke ei venehtanyt pitkaksi vaan pidattaydyimme vesilinjalla. Pikaveneemme Silversfift lahti Cairnsin satamasta kohti koralliriuttaa 8.30. Olimme ottaneet hiukan kalliimman ja paremman vaihtoehdon riutalle suunnatuista sukellusretkista, silla tata kyseista oli kehuttu paljon. Olimmekin erittain tyytyvaisia heti alusta alkaen. Varsinkin kun kaksoset olivat tuoneet Suomesta mukanaan matkapahoinvointitabletteja jotka ehkaisivat onneksi tehokkaasti pahoinvointia jonka sain edellisen kerran riutalle Teemun kanssa reissatessani. Me saimme sukeltaa kaksosten kanssa vasta toisella riutan kohteista, mika oli hyva, silla kaksosilla oli nain hiukan aikaa opetella veden alla hengittamista snorkkelin avulla. Ekalla riutalla he eivat kyllakaan uskaltautuneet kovin pitkalle snorklailemaan. Meidan piti sitten heti ensimmaisen kohtee... read more

Well G'day mates! Just a quickie cos we haven't much time, too much sunbathing to be done! So Fi is finally here!!! I was sad to leave Melbourne, made some good friends there but it is so nice to have a wee companion and to be filled in on all the goss from home. We've had a really busy time in Melbourne, Sydney and now Queensland. What have we been up to? Aussie Rules footie games, visiting Ramsay St (amazing and tiny), getting pissed, going to the Opera (classy birds), eating Kangaroo and Croc meat (former yummy, latter rank) and snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef! It was extremely rough and in complete open water. I thought I was going to get eaten, some man started screaming 'help' and freaked Fi out so she got back ... read more

Well I am currently in Sydeny, but am still catching up on my story telling, and I definitely want to catch everyone up on my REEF adventure.. so here goes.. The day after my exciting Skydiving experience I woke up bright and early again (I had to wake up at 6 30....) to get on my boat to head to the Reef. I went on Compass, which was actually the cheapest boat to go with, it was only 60 dollars which was a steal! (of course you then have to add reef tax, and it also costs to rent wet suits so you're warm in the water later on, but it does come with free snorkeling gear and free lunch.. which is pretty good if you ask me!) So I got up, headed out to the ... read more

Today I finally left Cairns to head South, I have literally got off the bus at Mission Beach. The last 6 days have been crazy hectic, but so so rewarding. I am now a certified adventure open water diver (I had enrolled on the open water course but all my class upgraded to the next qualification when we made the open water qualification). I couldn't speak more highly of Pro-Dive, they are professional and fun. My first two days were pool and theory classes, from first thing in the morning to after 6pm. Our instructors Gonzo and Kate are brilliant. It actually felt good to be back in a classroom learning again, and there was definitely a lot to learn. How to dive, how to dive safetly, how to set up equipment, how to use ... read more

Today we began our Scuba course, which is what we came to Australia with the dream of doing! We spent the first two days learning in the classroom and in a purpose built swimming pool. This was fun, but nothing compared to the third and fourth days! The course was an open water PADI course involving some fairly technical elements which made sure we weren’t going to make any mistakes under water. The fact that our crazy Japanese instructor Mitz (who looked like a graceful gymnast in the water!!) kept telling us we would DIE if we did anything wrong, made us very determined to get it right! We did all sorts of underwater and surface skills that we never thought about before the course. We also sat an exam at the end of the second ... read more
