Well it has been a while! Have not updated my blog for over two months now...that what happens when you get stuck in a black hole! I will try and keep it brief and just write important bits! Well after the last entry I did indeed manage to keep my job, but only just! The hours were increased so we were working 5am until 5pm which meant I had to get up at 4am...middle of the night! I would like to say thats what time I usually go to bed but as you most probably know...I rarely make it to 4am! :-) So worked worked worked for eight weeks, a week over what I needed to do for the visa. The time flew by! I had three days off and three half days so as you ... read more

08/12/06 - 10/12/06 Bundaberg & Childers Bundaberg is the sugar cane area of Queensland and famous for the Bundaberg rum distillery with the name known all over Australia and beyond, but it’s also famous for something else. 14km north of town is a small 1.5km long stretch of beach called Mon Repos. Between December and March every year this beach becomes the biggest rookery for marine turtles, particularly loggerheads, in the Southern Hemisphere, possibly the world. Marine turtles have been studied at Mon Repos for over 50 years by marine biologist Dr Colin Limpus, with hatchlings tagged 30 years ago now starting to return to lay eggs themselves. Little is known about the hatchlings that leave Mon Repos, except that for about 30 years they are ‘lost’ in the world’s oceans, but females will always go ... read more

We were exhauted and went straight to bed when we arrived in Bundy at 11pm. The next day I went to the lovely botanical gardens down the road from us. There were hundreds of huge Egrets nesting in the trees there. Olly was too tired to move and watched the cricket all day instead! The reason we went to Bundaberg was to go to Mon Repos, the most important sea turtle rookery in the world for loggerhead turtles. Almost as soon as we got to the rookery at 7pm there was already a turtle on the beach so we went straight down. It was a huge loggerhead (over 1m long) and it was her first time laying eggs (as she wasn't tagged) so she took a while. She dug out a 60cm deep hole with her ... read more

As you can see by the title of this entry, today is the best day...EVER! ok, so maybe I am slightly exaggerating but its pretty good anyway! Unbelievably, I have been in Bundaberg two weeks on Sunday. Can't believe I was concerned about not getting work because since I have arrived this is the first day that I have had off! Arrived last Sun and started work on Monday. Not a v productive day as was picking cherry tomatoes by the bucket - meaning I was getting paid by what I picked. Worked for eleven hours and got paid...wait for it....$60! wohooo! Not a big money maker! Day two I was moved on to hourly work - meaning I get paid by the hour - thank the lord! Am picking normal sized tomatoes on a large ... read more

Thursday morning Paul and I arrived in Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia. It was about 12 days and 1000 miles since leaving Luganville, Vanuatu. The passage was split into two parts. The first part was 4 days from Luganville to Chesterfield Reef. This was a pleasant passage. The winds were 20-25 knots, mostly aft of the beam. And they did us the tremendous favor of reducing as we approached and entered Chesterfield. After a few days at Chesterfield we left for the last leg to Bundy. We left in light winds and probably motored for 36 of the first 48 hours we were underway. Then it all changed in less than 12 hours the winds went from 10knots to 30knots and the seas quickly followed. The run wasn’t a pleasant downwind sail. The winds were abeam to aft ... read more

We left the mountains on the 21/08 and have been travelling since, back to the life of nomads. We travalled inland to Dubbo where we visited the zoo. From there we headed North and stayed ina small place called Iluka. From there up North to see Katherine, Matt, Zack and Jada. We had a great time, even babysitting Zack for an afternoon and evening. We slept well the next evening :O) From there we headed North and through torrential rain to Bundaberg. After a night in the van we have booked into a cabin on a campsite. We have been to the Bundaberg Distillery and seen the rum first hand! We should be leaving here on Monday and heading North again towards Gladstone. About 1-2 hours drive. Staying there for a couple of days and then ... read more

So we spent the last couple of days in Bundaberg. We arrived at lunchtime and calculated that we could make it to the rum distillery in time for the last tour (and hopefully a few free samples!!) Well, we wern't disappointed, after an hour pretending to look interested in how rum was made (remember those boring school trips where you just wanted it to be over so that you and your mates could get back on the coach and scoff all the sweets you had bought?!?!?!) we made it to the bar and the free samples. Not having had rum before we decided to give everything on offer a go - one slight problem was that we only got 2 free drinks each!! Not to worry - three rather hung over backpackers decided to forgo the ... read more
