Today we woke up at 9:00 and got ready to go on a whale watching boat cruise which was at 1 o’clock. We left the house at 10 because we knew it would be a long drive. When we got to where the boat was supposed to be, we had a shock to see that it wasn’t there! So we phoned the boat people and asked them why it wasn’t there and they said the boat wasn’t there because the boat didn’t go until 1:00 and at the time it was 12:00, and the boat was out whale watching at that moment. So we went and got a drink for an hour then we went and boarded the boat. We were on the boat until...4:30ish. We saw some dolphins some whales and some of the dolphins ... read more

So, still in Bundaberg, completed two thirds of the amountof work needed for the 2nd year visa extension, doing fruit picking and packing in the areas most desperate for backpacking workers. Although not planning to extend my visa, since most of the hard work has been done, I have had my form signed off anyway, just in case. Two more working days to go, then we will be back on the road again. Can't wait to hit the road, I'm getting all excited, the same as before we headed off in the first place. Exciting!! On another one of those forced day offs today, since the tomato shed is shut, and there is no other available work for me to do. It has surprised me how much everything, particularly agriculture, is affected by the weather here. ... read more

Onnistuttiin saamaan hostelli Bundabergista, ollaan nyt oltu jo yli nelja viikkoa. Homma toimii siten, etta hostelli hoitaa tyot automaattisesti paikallisilta farmeilta ja kuljetukset paikan paalle. Hostelilla on 100 ihmista, ehka puolet aasiasta ja loput kaikkialta euroopasta ja muutama kanukki. Tyopaivat on yleensa pitkia, joten arki kuluu lahinna samalla rutiinilla, toita, ruokaa ja lepoa. Vapaapaivan tullessa mennaan pubiin ja vedetaan kannit :) Tyolista tulee hostellin seinalle joka ilta 19.30, josta selviaa missa ja koska toita seuraavana paivana. Mun vakkarityo on sitrusfarmin (Abbotsleigh) pakkaamolla. Pakkaan mandariineja ja sitruunoita liukuhihnalta laatikoihin. Palkkaa maksetaan 15,5 dollaria tunnilla, mika ihan jees, koska jotkut tyot on urakkapalkalla. Sitruunat pakataan tietyssa jarjestyksessa ja pain laatikkoon (katso kuva). Hedelmat tulee valilla niin nopeasti hihnalt... read more

Bonjour, sorry its been a long time since I updated but Ive finally dragged myself away from the Beach lifestyle and have decided to hit the road again with the patched up van.Me and him have had a bit of a fallout,he failed when I needed him most,so after a few words he isnt playing up again and all is back to normal.Id like to thank Locky and his girlfriend Carla, who looked after me and spent a fair few messy nights talking garbage and fighting each other on his kitchen floor. Thanks for putting up with me mate, will miss your cooking and especially your steaks. Also need to say a little sorry to your neighbor whose house I inadvertently nearly burned down. This is a bit of a surreal story.Little Jim the staffy had managed to burrow his ... read more

It's about 5 o'clock in the morning, and the alarm bell is ringing. I seem to have no trouble at all getting up at this very hour, or even earlier when the job calls for it. It is still dark, and the temperature is getting cooler and cooler at this hour, as each day passes. The winter season is setting in at Bundaberg, although the days are still hotter than a British summer. After breakfast I stumble onto one of the several mini buses, and get shoffered to work, door step to farm gate. We are staying in a working hostel, we pay rent and they find, and take us to work. Each night the job list is posted on the noticeboard, indicating which farm we will be working on the following day. The whole concept ... read more

Not too much has gone on since my last blog entry other than a mixture of working and drinking, unfortunately more of one than the other... After a week or two of financial panic we got ourselves farm jobs in a backwards little place (Hicksville - mullets and no front teeth) called Bundaberg, about half way up the east coast of Australia. We are staying in a workers hostel called East Bundy Backpackers which is about half an hour from the town centre. The hostel is far from being a palace but there is a really good atmosphere here and a mixture of people from all over the world - British, Irish, German, Japanese, Korean, French, Italian, etc. As we were filling in the places of two people who had just left the hostel, when we ... read more

Well after a seven and a half hour journey I finally arrive in Bundaberg (the makers of Bundy Rum!) I am staying at the Cellblock Backpackers and it really was like being in prison! It was an old police station and still had some of the old cells that they had converted into rooms, not the homliest of places with its clinical white walls and bed linen. Glad I am only here for the night!! Had a look around the next day, it reminds me a little of Port Macquarie and beings it was a Sunday nothing was open so went to the IGA supermarket to stock up on some food for the day. Not the most exciting of places so its back on the road again.................................... ... read more

There is nothing like taking a holiday whilst on a holiday... I left the beautiful Sunshine Coast for a trip to the City most famous for its' Rum and Ginger Beer. Bundaberg! Kevin was going up for the Queensland Brass Band competitions so mum and I tagged along for the ride. Kevins family is known Nation wide for their talent in Brass instrumentals so ofcourse most of the Radfords were there, and no great suprises that their Band won ALL the awards... Congrats! And It was a great way to meet the unbeknown extended fam (Radfords) at Sizzlers restraunt after the long day of travel up from Nambour. Biggest highlight of the trip was catching up with favourite family friends from the days of living in Darwin, Peter Charles and lovely wife, May - "the ... read more

Pistetaanpas vahan ylos, millaista tama arki taalla Bundabergissa onkaan. Juttua neljan paivan ajalta... MAANANTAI Aamulla ylos klo 4:15. Jostain syysta tykkaan herata todella aikaisin ennen toihin lahtoa, etta saan itseni kunnolla hereille. Osa porukasta heraa, pukee paalle, tekee evaat ja syo aamiasen vartissa. Minulla siihen menee melkein tunti! Heti aamusta alkaen kaikki lahtee menemaan pain helvettia. Yritan keittaa vetta, jotta saan pikapuurot aamiaiseksi. Toissa vituttaa. Tylsaa hommaa, mutta tuleepahan rahaa. Loppupaivas... read more

March 06 We were up early. Weather is overcast but in the high 20's. Rains really hard but only for a half hour or so. Stace and I have a quick dip in their salt water pool. We then jump in the car and head out to the Australia zoo. No trouble finding it and because of the weather the place is quiet. We enter the zoo and take the train to the far end. The employees, guides etc. are all very polite and the banter with the customers and amongst themselves tells us they are happy working here and the place has a nice relaxed atmosphere. The animals are in very nice enclosures that rival their natural habitats. We are able to walk among several varieties of Kangaroos and koalas. They have the usual complement ... read more
