On the advice of Becky and Mike we took a slight detour back up north to Mon Repos beach in Bundaberg. It was well worth the trip as we witnessed 113 baby turtles hatching, digging their way out of their nest and scuttling into the sea (over Rosie's toes!!). Rosie spent much of the time when not in awe of the turtles crying silently about the tragic loss of her favourite little camera. :( after having phoned around everywhere we had visited over the last 3 weeks... she had finally admitted defeat and allowed the period of grieving to begin... when Becky insisted on making one more phone call. As Rosie said a decade of the Rosary in the corner, the Big Man came through for her and miraculously her baby was returned to her (it ... read more

Kertomus krapulaisen kuopiolaisen saapumisesta Bundabergiin. Tiedatteko muuten, kuinka espanjalainen kamppis oppii puhumaan parissa tunnissa sujuvaa suomea? Minapa tiedan. Matka Bundaan kesti yllattavan kauan, itse asiassa kaksi vuorokautta, koska valissa piti kayda Brisb... read more

Well it's been rather a long time since we last updated this so we thought we'd better let you guys know that we're still alive...just! To cut a long story short we've just spent the last five weeks doing some fruit picking work for some much needed dollars. This has meant early mornings (even before the sun has risen properly- well for me as Jonny always seems to get the jobs that allow a lie in) and even earlier nights as they was little else to do in Bundaberg. Five weeks of healthy living!! During our time in Bundy we picked and packed lychees, mangoes, passion fruit, tomatos and sweet potatoes. We also had the joy of weeding, paddock clearing and pruning tomato plants. We met some genuine aussie locals - however everyone seems to be ... read more

We were told about this place from people we met up the east coast so decided to check it out. We headed up there from Hervey Bay and that night was booked onto the tour to go down the beach and watch sea turtle hatchlings coming out of the sand and try to make their way to the water. Well we got lucky that night as there are no garentees how long you will have to wait to see something. We were pretty much straight out there watching a big sea turtle laying her eggs in the sand, after she popped out 130 eggs she covered them up and slowly made her way back to the sea where she would continue on her life as normal never to return back to see her babies! We had ... read more

Next, it was time to hop on a bus, to a place called Bundaberg. Bundaberg is actually a hotspot for working backpackers (man am I glad I am not one of them - the season's current 'fruit' is the sweet potato - oh the joy of spud picking hey?!) however we were there for entirely different reasons! Turtles and Rum! Not at the same time though! A beach near Bundaberg called Mon Repos is the breeding ground for 90% of the World's Loggerhead Turtle population. We were booked on to a night tour to see hatchlings, egg laying and nest building. And we were not to be disappointed!!!! We were staying in the hostel of the guy who ran the tour, who, although charging us a little more, managed to skip us to the front of ... read more

After leaving Byron and spending a large chunk of the money we had saved, Dayna and I knew it was time that the fun had to stop and the work had to start - a part of the trip that we had both been dreading. It has been so nice not working or going to school, not really having any responsiblity whatsoever other than finding a place to sleep, cooking up meals, and finding things to do to occupy ourselves each day. And that has not been a problem thus far in an amazing place such as this. We heard it was easy to get work in Brisbane which is a city an hour west of the coast. So we went there are got ourselves our own appartment! It was soo nice having our own space ... read more

Today took the tour that bought me to Bundaberg which is the rum tour. Left the hostel and arrived at the distallery and was taken around and the method explained then to the bar where we had two free tasting measures. Rather then trying the original I tried the triple distilled which was a lot better mixed with lime and ginger beer then neat, The second taster I had was the rum liquer which was a bit like kahulia when neat but the aussies mix it with cream and when I tried it the cream took alot of the flvour away. Returned to the hostel and took it easy due to the heat being in the mid 30's and very humid, also missed the bush fire which hit the other side of Bundaberg. Tomorrow I am ... read more

Had a lazy day round the hostel due to catching the 10pm bus. A few new people came in so we decided to have a bbq before they went on the turtle tour. I went round to the butchers and got a very large T bone stak and 2 sausages for the roral sum of $5 aprox 2pound 75p the others went to the turtle tour I paid Rod for the tours and accomodation and waited for the taxi that Rod had booked ro rake me to the bus station. He did this so he could see his family rather then running backwards and forwards. The footprints tour and hostel is by the far the best one I have come across so far. For 2 nighs a 4 bed dorm of my own.... read more

Moving on from Hervey Bay to Bundaberg, I was booked on the 13:10 greyhound bus and arrived at 2:25 a short journey for a change. The hostel called feeding grounds was recommended by Sheryl at the friendly, had rung them and booked in for 2 nights. The courtesy bus picked me up from the bus station an on arrival Rod advised there are 7 guests tonight so everyone has a dorm to themselves unless travelling with others. When I rang the hostel to book they asked if I wanted to do the two main trips which are the footprints turtle tour and the Bundaberg rum tour so said yes as the rum tour was the main reason for stopping in here. The turtle tour left the hostel at 6pm and we were advised we may be ... read more

Up early despite late night and excess alcohol (home brew, red wine, port and drambuie are not really recommended). Morning here is a bit like living beside the aviary at a zoo -parakeets, lorrikeets, our old friend the mynah and I don't know what else - a dawn caucophony rather than dawn chorus. Organised car-hire and trip to see loggergead turtles, Wendy had a quick dip in the outdoor pool then went into town for a wander round Brisbane (and to let Cara have a last shopping spree). Spent most of the afternoon between the Botanic Garden and Roma parks. Saw my first kookaburra once you hear them you understand where the name comes from. The place is also overrun with Ibises - flying rats according to the locals (they tend to live off garbage), large ... read more
