Today woke up around eleven, even though I went to sleep at around eleven the night before. We grabbed breakfast and showered and went to the address we were given about a job. From what mike heard he thought it would be the company office and they would tell us what time to come back for a propper interview. It turned out that it was a job recruitment agency. We were there for all of five mintutes because they told us we needed to have a bank account, work clothes (boots hard hat etc) and a blue card which is a labour health and safety type card. After being told of the new things we needed we headed into town. We went to the NAB (National Australian Bank) and set up accounts so that we had ... read more

We woke up around ten grabbed some food and then lounged around the pool watched tv n such for most of the day. Later in the afternoon we did leave to grab another large load of groceries. After that we got right back to loungin before dinner. After we had made dinner there was nothing to do and there was a bunch of british people in the lounge room doing nothing particularly. This one clown guy who doesnt do much at all suggested we play sheraaaaaads as the british say it. We played that until around 10 before we went back to our room and talked to my bunkmate Andreas from Chile about the diference in culture and ... read more

Today we woke up around 9:30 after a fairly long sleep. We grabbed breakfast and got changed. After that we phoned some jobs and got an interview with a labour/landscape agency for monday. After that we got our stuff together and went out to check out this area of the city called Southbank. This area is just across the river from our hostel and goes all the way to the southern tip of the central business district. The are was very green with gardens, grass land and little rainforest spots throughout. Because it was Saturday there was also a market area set up. This was a nice place to walk through to escape the urban lifestype for a few hours. We got back from this just after 12 and grabbed lunch. After that we watched some ... read more

This morning we woke up at 8:30 and grabbed breakfast then went on the internet. After this we went back to our room and got ready for the day. The next thing was to say goodbye to Luke. After sayin goodbye Mike and I went a job meeting with a worker from the hostel. We found out some good information about openings in the labor industry mainly. After the meeting we emptied out our big hiking bags and headed into town. We went to Virgin Mobile to get our cell phones. They had a deal where we could get two prepaid phones for 99 dollars which included 5 dollars credit, free calling virgin to virgin and free txting virgin to virgin. After that we went to coles and baught forty dollars worth of food which looked ... read more

We arrived in Brisbane last night after a long flight of 22 hours. The flights were not too bad, as on the first leg to Singapore, we had three seats each, so I covered myself in my blanket, and I slept for a good few hours. Then at Singapore Airport, we slept on some sets for about 1/2 an hour, and then we went to our gate, and got on the plane quite quickly. I slept for about three hours on the second flight. We had some food, and then we watched some T.V. It took a while to get our bags, and then we had to declare certain items at customs, so that took a little longer, to open our bags and things. Today we went to Movie World, and we went on all of ... read more

Today we woke up around 8:30. We had no food so we went out to find a grocery store. We also wernt happy with our hostel so we decided we would try to find another one. We found Brisbane City Backpackers which was located about 500 metres west of where we were before. The hostel is located in the very northwest area of Brisbane's downtown area. Once we had booked the hostel for that night we left to find a grocery store. All three of us went to the store and got our groceries. By the time we got back to our hostel it was 11 O'clock however. This was not good because you much check out at 10 O'clock from the hostel or else you loose your 10 dollar key deposit. Because of this we ... read more

Hi everyone, Time for an update on our travels in OZ. On the 28th Jan we set out south from Perth, W.Australia to enjoy the less extreme end of the state. Driving south from Perth you encounter many ports and industrial sites, competeing with whole new towns that are springing up on the beautiful coastline. The south of WA is a lush warm area with many vineyards, fruit production and farms. We spent our first night in Bunbury a small seaside town with a great beach, ie no sharks jellyfish or stingrays. Oward the next day through Cape Naturaliste national park, beautiful seascapes spoilt only by the huge number of flies constantly trying to get into your ears, eyes and nose! On route south we went through forests still smoking after recent bushfires had swept the ... read more

I thought I should take a few photos of what 'Brisbane' means to me, seeing as how I'm going to be leaving it soon. And of course, having decided to do that, I could come up with nothing. So I figured I'll just post a little bit about the city. A warning for all you possible visitors: Do NOT use Southbank (or Mater Hill) busway stations between 3PM and 4PM during term time. Just don't. It's not worth your life! Seeing the time, I chose to take the long way round and get on at the city rather than walk across the bridge to Southbank from QUT. Why? Because about 4 schools let out in the same area at roughly the same time, and ALL the kids go to one of these two bus stations. And ... read more

In Memory of... Richard Bottomley 1986-2008 Hey Guys, Do you hear that noise? (No?) Thats the sound of continual rainfall. Ever since we stepped off the plane at Cairns in the middle of the night it has been raining almost continually. It varies in intensity from the light spitting rain to the heavy end-of-the-earth, raining cats, dogs and other mammels kinda rain. Taking a walk in Cairns was a bit of a risky business as the weather could turn just like that. Infact a couple of times i got caught out by the rain and got soaked to the skin. Thankfully we did have one day of glorious sunshine and that was the day we went to the Great Barrier... read more

A river runs through it. That is the best way to describe this cosmopolitan city roughly the same size as Toronto. While most of my time here has consisted of hanging out at the hostel for the sake of saving money, the sights and sounds of the city are there for even the most penny pinching traveller to enjoy. The main drawback of this big Australian city is that it doesn't have any natural beaches for people to enjoy. So there's no chance to work on the surfing or boogieboarding skillz. But Brisbane is booming. Big cranes are visible anywhere you look on the skyline and the locals say that their city's entire skyline has changed over the past 15 years. With the exception of the historic buildings, which are not few and far between. The ... read more
