I'm starting to get a decent idea of the ideal hostel. For a start, it needs to be empty. The first was Cairns Beach House, paradise, though I didn't know it at the time. Choice of bunk, ensuite that you could walk into without catching anything, aircon keeping the temperature pleasant and a light switch that people knew how to use. (for some reason, the light has to stay on till everyone has come to bed, and there are quite a few vampires in Australia - sleep in the day, make moise at night. Then you're made to feel guilty for turning the light on during daylight hours - after 9am, stop caring after a while) This place even had cheap pool tables, nice bar, internet that even friends could sneak into use, and a very ... read more

I arrived in Oz a couple of weeks ago and was met with heavy showers at Sydney airport. Not the welcome I'd expected. Had come all prepared with my factor 30 and sunglasses. Hey ho. Anyway, I spent a first jet-lagged day in Sydney before flying up to Cairns with the plan to travel down the East coast back to Sydney and then fly on to NZ. Funny seeing the Opera House looking so overcast but at least the tropical park nearby was a monsoonly real experience. Cairns came as an unexpected culture shock. The 20-something backpacker party-party-party scene was a bit too much for me, I have to confess, and I suddenly felt very old and boring! Decided the best way to deal with it was to buy a tent (a snip at 15 quid ... read more

Well it has been quite a while since we last updated our blog so I thought it was about time to give you a bit of an update!!! Since we last updadated the blog we have been on the road in our campervan Shelia and we have seen so much that I don't quite know where to start but I guess I'll start with the Great Ocean Road. After picking up Shelia we got staright on the road and made our way to the famous Great Ocean Road. Everyone that we had spoken to in Melbourne had advised to see this so it seemed about as good a place as any to start. We spent 3 days driving along the coast with what has to be some of the most spectacular roads and scenery that we ... read more

Feels like I've been here a while now but its time to move on. Planning to go to the Gold Coast over the weekend and I'm out over next few nites so I'll kip wherever I end up for the next few days and check into another hostel nearer to work next week. Since I moved out of room 19 I've been staying in one of the staff rooms. Met some really nice people who I'm hoping to stay in touch with while travelling about. Especially got on with Brie & Kelly from Canada, Torren & Hannah from Auz, Pete & Anja from Liverpool. Also met some people while I was working at the hostel, Amanda from New Zealand and Melissa from Canada. We had a few messy nights in the bar but I'm glad to ... read more

I am now in very moist yet hot Brisbane, as of yesterday evening. I arranged collection of myself and still (weirdly) heavy belongings from the airport by the TRansbus, and typically was the last stop! (I say weirdly, as i sent Paul a parcel of some clothes and stuff, which came in at nearly 3 KGs!!!) I just cant off load anymore stuff without becoming downright unhygienic and there are a few precious thinsg that a girl just cant do without! ah well) I also have the pleasure of sharing my stinking of sweaty feet room, with probably the most insipid couple I have ever met. Positively thinking, it is only for another night. I sorted my bags out, slipped on my eye mask; squeezed in my ear plugs and went to sleep, to the soft ... read more

Well I finally got a job again. Looks like It was a really bad time to find a job between Christmas and New Year as its the Aussie summer holiday, so most of the recruitment agencies are shut till the second Monday after the new year. Was getting to the stage where I was prepared to wash dishes and peel potatoes just for some money coming in. Brodi my recruitment consultant rang me up on Monday offering me a day in a government department, then at least 2 weeks working for Queensland main roads. I've been working there ever since. It's pretty boring work as I'm working with PDF's all day but it's $20 an hour full time so its around $700 a week. The agencies called 'Julia Ross' and they've got offices in every state ... read more

Im still in Brisbane and Im not entirely sure what I did day by day in the last few days but Ill give you the general gist of things. I've pretty much explored the whole of Brisbane city centre and some of its inner suburbs. I now know Brisbane better than I do Birmingham. Having done most of the usual touristy stuff I wanted to do something a bit different and opted to do a ghost tour of the nearby Toowong cemetary. The cemetary is absolutely huge and we only walked about a third of the way in over two and a half hours. We were lead on our ghost tour by a creepy guy called Jack Simm who was a really nice guy and really knew his stuff about the macabre part of Brisbane's history. ... read more

Well it's been pissing it down with rain for days now and I'm starting to go stir crazy. Me and Stu decided to do the XXXX Ale house tour which was only 5 minutes walk away. Unfortunately there was no photography allowed inside the brewery but I managed to take some outside the building and in the bar. The tour takes about an hour and goes through the history of the XXXX brand and the way the beer is made. You also get to see some of the processes involved in making the beer and the bottling of the beer. Very thirst work so its just as well that as part of your ticket you get 4 free beers at the end of the tour. They also make a beer called XXX which is only served ... read more

On my last day in Coffs I avoided the rain and managed to get to the train station to go to Brisbane. The train was late and due to heavy flooding I only went one stop before I had to get on a bus for the rest of the journey. This was a blessing in disguise as if it wasn't for the flooding I would not have been able to see the giant prawn! The giant prawn is one of a few inexplicable tourist attractions in Australia, others include a giant guitar, a giant koala and the big banana. We got to stop by the prawn and get something to eat while admiring this amazing homage to our pink friends from the sea. I got into Brisbane quite late and booked into my hostel, which is ... read more
