The famous 12 apostles
Although there are now only 9!!! Well it has been quite a while since we last updated our blog so I thought it was about time to give you a bit of an update!!! Since we last updadated the blog we have been on the road in our campervan Shelia and we have seen so much that I don't quite know where to start but I guess I'll start with the Great Ocean Road. After picking up Shelia we got staright on the road and made our way to the famous Great Ocean Road. Everyone that we had spoken to in Melbourne had advised to see this so it seemed about as good a place as any to start. We spent 3 days driving along the coast with what has to be some of the most spectacular roads and scenery that we have ever seen. It really is like something straight out of a road movie with roads winding around mountains along the coast and through forests. It definately is something I would recommend to everyone and that was before we even stepped out of the van. There are scenic lookout points every few kilometer's and you could spend hours looking at them. The most famous one's
are the big rock formations the 12 apostles and London bridge but there are so many other's it really is beatiful as hopefully you will be able to see from the pic's. On our last night we decided to drive back to the 12 apostles for sunset. It was beautiful even though there were hundreads of other tourists. We decided to wait for about half an hour after the sun had gone down as we heard that little penguins came ashore. So after waiting in the freezing cold and after all the rest of the tourists had gone we were treated to our own private prenguin show as we watched them waddle onto the beach do a little dance and then get sucked back in by the tide!!! Rough giude books do come in handy after all!!!! We could have spent another week along the Great Ocean Road but we had to head back to Melbourne as we had tickets for the 1st day of the Australian open.
Although neither of us were die hard tennis fans we thought it would be a nice end to our time in Melbourne. By the end of the day we were both
Our campervan Sheila
Our home for the next 45 days!!! hooked and wanted to stay on for the evening sessions!!! We got to see 3 matchs which included Serena Williams, Justine Hennin (the world number 1) and the very disapointing Andy Murray getting hammered by Tsonga ( who went onto the final!!). We felt like we had to support Murray because he is British but by the end we were supporting Tsonga who completely outplayed him!!! It was quite funny seeing him have a hissy fit at the end, ha ha!!!!!
The next day was the start of our trip up the coast to Cairns. We started easy by making our way to Phillip Island for the famous Penguin parade and koala's. It was lovely to see these animals in the wild and we got to see hundreads of penguins waddle ashore and we even got to follow them all the way inland. They are hilarious, we're not getting obsessed with penguins but Karen did try and put one in her rucksack!!!! Over the next few days we stopped off at the beautiful Wilson's prom and the Eden on our way up to Sydney.
On getting into Sydney we were greeted with 2 days of terrential rainfall. It
Bell's beach
This is where they hold the annual Rip curl surf tournement was really disapointing and we didn't get to see Sydney at it's best until our 3rd day. It definately was worth the wait though!!! The first few days we thought we'd try and take in a bit of culture so we went to the museum's and art galleries (mainly because the were indoors and it was pissing it down!!!) Once the weather cleared up we decided to explore Sydney properly, it felt like we had walked a marathon but we got to see all the sights including, Mcquaries chair and the botanical garden's Darling harbour and of course that place where they show the opera and that bridge, I can't remember it's name!!!!! We also thought we'd spend a bit of time seeing some Sydney surf so we headed over to Manly which was beautiful and also too a trip to Bondi which was great!!! We finished our time in Sydney by taking a trip up to the Blue mountains which were quite simply jaw dropping!!!!! I'll let the picture's do the talking and as you can see it is beautiful!!! We also got to cuddle a koala!!!!
After leaving Sydney we carried on up the coast stopping of
first at Coff's harbour or the big bannana as it's also known. We didn't really get to see Coff's harbour properly as it was rainging again!!! I think the rain's following us!!! We did however get a photo of the big bannana which made it all worth it and also one of the giant prawn!!! After a wet day in Coff's we moved on up to Byron Bay and were luckily greeted by lot's of sun. Byron bay is world famous for it's surf and we got to see lot's of the surfer's hangin 10!!! It's also quite famous for all it's hippies and being quite alternate. It was Australia day when we got there so we decided we'd celebrate with the local's which led to some very sore heads the next day!!!!!
So now we're in Brisbane and again it's raining!!!! So far we've done 3500 k's and we're about half way!! We've still got some of the most exciting things to come including Fraser island and the Whitsundays, I can't wait!!!!!
