Unbelievable whale watching, the most amazing time ever on Fraser Island and sailing in paradise in the Whitsunday Islands. Photos? No. I somehow managed to delete every single photo I've taken so far - about 500 of the most amazing photos of some of the most amazing things I've ever seen, all gone. Am devastated. Anyone who knows me knows how obsessed I am with my photos. Completely gutted. Entries will follow when i've got over it :(... read more

Once we'd finally managed to extract ourselves from the very friendly but extremely talkative man in the kitchen at Gunna Go campsite, we took to the road for the short drive down to Airlie Beach to catch up with the boys. As we drove to the camping area behind Magnums Backpackers, we encountered a very disheveled looking Ross stumbling around, apparently still drunk, looking for Wigg and Wayne. Airlie Beach was already living up to its reputation of being a party town! As we turned the corner Wigg and Wayne confirmed this - Wigg with his head under the tap and Wayne holding a 15 litre bottle of water over his head, downing as much as possible - both seriously parched and hungover! As we set up camp next to the boys tents, and pretty much ... read more

A self explanitory title After five lazy days in Bowen, we drove 140km south to Airlie Beach. Arlie beach is a jumping restort town, despite its name is has NO beach...mmn...but a huge lagoon -or- swimming pool as we know know it. Backpackers arrive by the coach load to seek the beautiful Whitsundays Islands, beaches, sailing, and boozy doo's. Unfortunately the weather was bad for the first five days we where there, so we camped in a car park :o/ for the duration until the gail force winds and rain had passed... It was during this time that we felt obliged to visit every pub and club at least three times, met loads of sound people, and partied the nights away. We booked a three day tour of the Whitsundays on a huge Catamoran called 'Wings' ... read more

Avatar. Apparently it means 'perfect form'. To me it's just a beautiful boat. More specifically a racing trimaran yacht on which I just spent 3 exhilirating days cruising the whitsunday islands. The skipper claimed to have had it up to 35 knots. We made about 18 knots, which still felt pretty bloody quick!!! The first day was lovely and sunny and hot. We went to Whitehaven beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Almost completely pure white silica sand and sparkling green waters make it absolutely stunning. The next day was raining and windy. This just made the sailing all the more exciting. A few of us just sat for ages on the pontoons which would rise and fall quite dramatically, showering us with spray. Loved it!! Did a bit of snorkelling too. ... read more

Part I: Far North Queensland We arrived in Australia on a flight from Auckland, New Zealand. We’d spent just one night close to Auckland Airport where we had a cold night and found it bizarrely enjoyable: mosquito-free and blankets on the bed. Great! We arrived in Cairns to a beautiful, hot, sunny day…this is what Queenslanders call winter! Despite our travel-induced fog of tiredness, we were pleasantly surprised by Cairns. It’s a laid back sort of place with a nice esplanade and a man-made lagoon (deadly jelly fish make swimming in the sea risky for much of the year). Cairns is full of backpackers starting or ending their East Coast travels and the night life and tour companies are geared up for them. So we used our time in Cairns to get organised and book some ... read more

So, we've just got back from sailing round the Whitsundays The few days we stayed in Airlie Beach were pretty cool as well. As we spent a morning working on the van we were lucky enough to realise there were some rather large lizards of some description living in the dried up creek behind where we were parked. Even better was when two of them had a fight just feet from our van. Of course I(H) did the typical girlie thing and flapped and ran, forgetting to warn John who was still lying under the van. When he raised his voice I was able to tell him I thought it might be safer if he moved for a while. He was able to do this and grab my camera - always cool when I'm not!!!! And ... read more

Whitsundays Captain Birdseye would've been proud. We had decided on an "interactive' sailing experience round the Whitsunday Islands, so rather than stretching out on deck for the trip, we threw ourselves at the mercy of Neptune, on a Pro-Sail Maxi racing yacht, with us tourists paying for the privilege of hoisting sails etc. The boat was called Apollo, god of the sun, dancing, music and festivities. Unfortunately the gods on Olympus (Greek/Roman.. same same!) weren't playing fair, with very little wind meaning that the engine was used more frequently than the sails, but there was plenty of sun, music and festivities! There was a good mixed group on the boat, with French, German, English...and of course the obligatory Irish, as we met up with Alex and Lyle at the tail end of their summer trip, mournfully ... read more

Aug 20. Easy day in Airlie. Only incident guy threw baked beans on me. Meant I had to do more laundry. He's harassed me before. Otherwise, sunshine in paradise. Dockers whipped St Kilda yesterday to move into the top four!! Eagles strolled past Brisbane to move into first. That means next weeks match Eagles vs Dockers at Subi will be the biggest match in the country. Wallabies fell short at Eden Park last night 27-34. Good match but.... read more

19 Aug. Airlie. Met couple from one of five 'Eureka'-flying boats in harbour. They got sticker. I tried to get them to get flag. The five would be spectacular. Current count 5 Eureka, three current Aussie, one bulldogs, one sharks, one Northern Territory and one unidentifiable. Glorious day on the rocks of the marina. Dreaming. Inflatable comes out of sailing club. They wave. I wave. I point to flag and salute. Merwoman salutes. I give thumbs up. She gives three fingers facing (scouts salute). They laugh. A tern catches a fish. Shakes, swallows. Then flying low washes beak. Very civilized!!!... read more
