We had arranged to drop the car off at the airport, which was very easy given the early hour of the morning. We had allowed way too much time and hence had to wait for ages in the flight. We had not filled the car with petrol and we felt there wasn’t enough time, which was clearly a mistake. Darwin had changed completely from when I was last there (see ). I initially didn’t recognise any of it. It was a sleepy little town last time (with no work going, which we a big issue for us) but now it was relatively busy and built up. The backpackers also seemed to have taken over, with lots of hostels, bars, tour offices and second-hand car yards as well. It reminded me of Cairns and would have been ... read more

We arrived in Darwin in the late afternoon and pulled up at the YHA. Mikey wanted to stay here because the ashes tickets he had purchased were being sent here. As we walked into reception to check in it was quite obvious that they were having a big refurb. We checked in and found the facilities quite basic - the kitchen was hideously small and cockroaches were all over the place. I was in a bunk above a bloke from London, Liam. Unfortunately he was a Gooner like alot of the people I had met on my way up here. Alot was going through my head when we first arrived in Darwin and i felt obliged to come home as the credit card had been severely dipped into. I even went to the extent of phoning ... read more

Hello! We flew to Darwin from Sydney last night, after a tour through the Australian War Memorial Museum. I think many of us were not aware that Australia was involved in many wars, and the museum helped give us some history. Some students also were able to speak to some war veterans and watch a wreath laying ceramony at the end of our tour. We were happy to leave the cold weather and fly to Darwin. It was a late night for us as we didn't get in until midnight. This morning we headed out to the Northern Territory museum where we were able to see many of Australia's wildlife in taxidermy form (much preffered after looking at some of them) and then headed to Crocodylus Park where we were able to hold a baby crocodile ... read more

Day 25 Katherine Gorge to Edith Falls 24/07/06 Once again, due to the noisy bats, we awoke reasonably early. We packed up after breakfast and headed back into Katherine for a top up of supplies and fuel. At about 10.15am, again we headed North on the Stuart Highway, this time for Edith Falls. As it was only a short drive we arrived at about 11.00am. This place is incredible, a hidden oasis. There is green grass and shaded camp spots everywhere. Once we had chosen our preferred camp spots, we set up and walked back down to the kiosk to find out what this place had to offer. From here we decided to head to the swimming hole and it was great. All of us went in for a swim, eventually, as initially it was pretty ... read more

14/7/06 Had a lie in and up just before 10.00am, went into Darwin and had a good look around after a milkshake topped up phone and wandered down to the sea for a sit down in the shade. Went into Coles for supplies and back for BBQ plus did some washing, Lisa made fruit salad for dessert while Bim and Feeg wandered round the site (we actually crept out with a couple of cold tinnies I recall - Bim). 15/7/06 Had a lie in again and Lisa and Feeg had a swim before packing. Left for airport 1.20 pm took ages checking in went through to departures with them and went through to gate about 3.15pm, very sad as we won’t see her for ages. Stopped at Coles for meat for BBQ and also get our ... read more

Sorry guys it has been a long time but we have had trouble gaining access to the internet. Thanks for all your well wises and emails. Day 119 Sunday 30 July 2006 Daly River to Darwin We were all excited to visit Darwin as Nana and Pop were to arrive in two days time. On the way we stopped at Adelaide River - the pub with Charlie the buffalo from Crocodile Dundee. He is huge and stuffed sitting on the bar. We were a little concerned on where we booked as people had mixed reactions. Freespirit with it’s three pools, restaurant, bar and activities. We were very surprised when we arrived- really nice more a resort than anything. We set up the annexe and had some more space again. The kids found their friends again - ... read more

Oh my god, just realised that it's over 3 months since I left for the big wide world, that has to be mused on little, seems so long ago that I racked up with 5 hours to spare at Heathrow that morning in April. Guess I've packed quite a lot in but then that's why I made my own indigestable packed lunches, sold my beloved silver Ford Escort, and generally winged "I can't go out, I'm saving to go travelling" Actually don't ask why I found this out but on typing my name into Google.com I found the link to my blog came up first, this is a huge responsibility for me! I'm really going to have to up the ante so to speak. As someone said a little less like Clive James, and a little ... read more

G'day, no longer from WA but from Northern Territory, in balmy Darwin. Safe and sound from playing bushman out in the massive but deserted Kimberleys Region. Left my resort on Sunday, after another day on Cable Beach, then headed in a group of 9 + Steve Irwinesque guide Nick for the outback, in a trusty Toyota LandCruiser + Trailer. Was 5 days of remoteness like I've never seen before, sleeping under the stars etc and was allround pretty damn cool. My main duty was 'fireman' ensure that as soon as we 'hit camp' that a fire was built and sustained, my fires were so bloody good that they were still there to heat tea for breakfast, but only cos I got up at 5.30am to retend to them, and it got me out of cooking and ... read more

It was the year of our lord, four score and ten ... plus 19 at the front and add 7 at the end. It was 1997 is what Im saying and I was about to go into my final year of my astrophysics with Swahili course at the world renouned East Yorkshire Polytechnic. I was the youngest student in my class having shown at a tender age that I was, in short, a genius. Having proved Einstein was wrong when I was 11, I called into question Newtons ideas about gravity which, after a legal wrangle, is now being largely corroborated by the leading experts in the field. In addition to my course, I was also captain of the football team, cricket team, rugby team, headboy, prefect and allround general nice bloke. Everyone liked me and ... read more

The journey to Darwin was only 3.5 hours and on stepping out of the coach I could tell it was too warm and muggy for my liking. Darwin is the capital of Northern Territory, which was clear from the number of bars, restaurants and hostels nearby, the like of which I hadn't seen since Perth, though it's population is only about 100,000. I'd had a lot of trouble finding somewhere to stay in Darwin, and from Kununurra had phoned round every hostel in my guidebook before I finally found accommodation for my entire stay. One problem was that I'd originally only intended staying a day or 2 before heading out to a couple of the national parks, however various e-mails I'd received had indicated that a lot of people from earlier in my trip would be ... read more
